How to see - the way of seeing things

Text: Takahiro Goko

How do you usually shop? Do you usually buy things by gathering information on the Internet, comparing and examining them? For example, lights and objects you find at flea markets that are one-of-a-kind and add a touch of color to your life. I am not saying that impulse buying is a good idea, but it might be a good idea to buy things that are more true to your own sensibilities and feelings. Here, Goko-san, who collects interior goods, vintage items, crafts, and local toys from all over the world, without limiting the genre, age, or region, and with her own unique sensibility, tells us how she sees and enjoys things.

Vol. 3 Nelson's Books.

The "How to See" that I use in the title of this column means , in other words, "how to see things. . In fact, it was taken from a book with the same title published in the U.S. in 1977.

The book is "How to See / A Guide to Reading Our Manmade Environment" by George Nelson, a leading mid-century designer who was a journalist, editor, architect, designer, and many other things.

The book's content is a logical explanation of Nelson's views and philosophy on design and objects, and Nelson's perspective that even the ordinary shapes and designs that seem to abound in the city are composed of intention and meaning.

In plain English, the question is, "Are we taking a good look at our surroundings?" .

. I think it somehow goes back to thinking about the composition of squares in today's Instagram, etc.

Are you overlooking the things around you that you see without thinking about them? If you cut out the things you see from this perspective, you may open up a different world.

It is also a very good resource as a book. The one pictured is a first edition , but it has been re-released in recent years. Why don't you look for it?
