How to see - the way of seeing things

Text: Takahiro Goko

How do you usually shop? Do you usually buy things by gathering information on the Internet, comparing and examining them? For example, lights and objects you find at flea markets that are one-of-a-kind and add a touch of color to your life. I am not saying that impulse buying is a good idea, but it might be a good idea to buy things that are more true to your own sensibilities and feelings. Here, Goko-san, who collects interior goods, vintage items, crafts, and local toys from all over the world, without limiting the genre, age, or region, and with her own unique sensibility, tells us how she sees and enjoys things.

Vol. 8 Floor fun.

It was actually only in the last three years or so that I discovered the joys of floors. Surprisingly, there are many different types of flooring materials, but we usually don't pay much attention to them and spend a lot of time without thinking about them.

I first became interested in floors about seven years ago at the newly renovated L.A. airport. When I was standing in line at the security checkpoint, I looked at the floor and was struck by the vividness of the flooring material. It was an artificial marble called "Terrazzo," made of finely ground stone and glass mixed with white cement and hardened, then polished to a marble-like finish.

I became so interested in looking at flooring materials that when I was asked to do interior design work, I would think about how to make the flooring look fun. Of course, terrazzo is not the only material that can be used, but there are also vinyl sheets that resemble terrazzo, which are surprisingly easy to handle and incorporate into interiors. The vinyl sheets I mentioned later are often used in public places such as schools, hospitals, and train cars, and are available in a wide variety of colors and patterns due in part to their durability, water resistance, and other functional aspects.

Recently, I have been looking forward to strolling on floors in places that were built or renovated relatively recently, such as the Oedo Line and the Tokyo Monorail. But of course, old artificial marble and other floors with a sense of history are also nice and heavy.

You may be surprised at the color combinations and patterns of many such terrazzo and vinyl sheets used in the city. I am sure that you will notice things that have been there before but that you had not noticed.

It's fun to stroll around looking at the floor instead of just fiddling with your cell phone.
