How to see - the way of seeing things

Text: Takahiro Goko

How do you usually shop? Do you usually buy things by gathering information on the Internet, comparing and examining them? For example, lights and objects you find at flea markets that are one-of-a-kind and add a touch of color to your life. I am not saying that impulse buying is a good idea, but it might be a good idea to buy things that are more true to your own sensibilities and feelings. Here, Goko-san, who collects interior goods, vintage items, crafts, and local toys from all over the world, without limiting the genre, age, or region, and with her own unique sensibility, tells us how she sees and enjoys things.

Vol. 12 Tapio Viluccara wood products.

If you ask me who is my favorite Scandinavian designer, I will answer: Tapio Virkkala of Finland. I would answer: Finland's Tapio Virkkala. His work ranges from glassware to industrial products such as ketchup bottles.

He also designed many artworks and products for Iittala, a glass manufacturer, but I was most fascinated by his works using layered wood.

It is made from plywood made from Finnish birch, a popular wood in Scandinavia, and the different colors of the glued surfaces are made to look like the veins of a leaf or the annual rings of a tree. The beauty of the wood is so enchanting that you could spend hours looking at it.

As beautiful as the bowls are, I have no idea how they are made as far as the table tops are concerned. Are they gluing them together so that they are wavy and using cross sections, or are they carving them out of planks with a curved blade...

In any case, it seems certain that the surface is ground thinly with a kind of plane, like Hakone marquetry. Moreover, Tapio has been able to calculate in his mind these patterns that come out when he grinds.

The Finnish birch's unique appearance as it ages and turns candy-colored adds to its charm.
