How to see - the way of seeing things

Text: Takahiro Goko

How do you usually shop? Do you usually buy things by gathering information on the Internet, comparing and examining them? For example, lights and objects you find at flea markets that are one-of-a-kind and add a touch of color to your life. I am not saying that impulse buying is a good idea, but it might be a good idea to buy things that are more true to your own sensibilities and feelings. Here, Goko-san, who collects interior goods, vintage items, crafts, and local toys from all over the world, without limiting the genre, age, or region, and with her own unique sensibility, tells us how she sees and enjoys things.

Vol. 13 Kim Hono's vessels.

Kim Hono is a ceramic artist with a studio in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture .

I first encountered Kim's work in 2015 when I visited a coffee shop in Kyoto called KAFE Kofun. It was February in Kyoto, and it was cold at the bottom, so I ordered a warm café au lait, and the cup that came out was something I had never seen before. It had letters on it, and the colors were so freely chosen that it had an almost cosmic grandeur in my mind. I couldn't help but ask him whose work it was, and he told me that it belonged to Mr. Kim, a potter in Seto City.

. It was four years later, last year, that I was able to visit the studio for the first time. I was curious to meet Mr. Kim, who also has this world view, and what kind of person he is.

. after all, we talked a lot about things that seemed to pursue the core of things. Needless to say, we had a lot of conversations about the color white, things other than pottery, and many other things related to objects. He is a type of person that I have never met before, and to be honest, I wanted to take a peek inside his head.

Meek, standard tableware is fine, but incorporating a piece like Kim's into your dining room table is a lot of fun and changes the flow of time. It is good to get rid of any strange preconceptions and enjoy a meal with such cosmic works of art. Surprisingly, it goes well with a variety of dishes and shows you a world you have never seen before. Also, it would be nice to have enough tableware to use differently depending on the season and situation.

My goal right now is to have Kim's exhibition at my store, and every day I'm wondering how to write a love letter to her.
