How to see - the way of seeing things

Text: Takahiro Goko

How do you usually shop? Do you usually buy things by gathering information on the Internet, comparing and examining them? For example, lights and objects you find at flea markets that are one-of-a-kind and add a touch of color to your life. I am not saying that impulse buying is a good idea, but it might be a good idea to buy things that are more true to your own sensibilities and feelings. Here, Goko-san, who collects interior goods, vintage items, crafts, and local toys from all over the world, without limiting the genre, age, or region, and with her own unique sensibility, tells us how she sees and enjoys things.

VOL.21 Japanese bamboo products.

A few years ago, we began to hear about the crisis in bamboo crafts. They say that the number of bearers and makers is decreasing and that the lack of good-quality bamboo is a factor.

Bamboo products are said to last for 100 years if used properly because of their high oil content and strong fibers. Of course, in Japan, bamboo grows naturally throughout the country, and one could see good quality baskets and other bamboo products in many places.

Even in recent years, for the reasons mentioned earlier, these good artifacts have dwindled in number. Many things that could be bought a few years ago have disappeared. For example, the AKARI lighting series by Isamu Noguchi includes the BB series of floor lights that use bamboo posts, but production of these lights has been discontinued due to the lack of thin, straight bamboo.

However, there are still beautiful bamboo products in existence today, and some have been reissued by new makers. Whether you look for them on your travels or look around your hometown when you return home, the act of searching for such items is enjoyable.

Please take one in your hand and experience the wonder of bamboo products. I believe that buying one is the first step to preserve the craft. Bamboo baskets are not only for women. I would like men to open the door to bamboo baskets as well.
