How to see - the way of seeing things

Text: Takahiro Goko

How do you usually shop? Do you usually buy things by gathering information on the Internet, comparing and examining them? For example, lights and objects you find at flea markets that are one-of-a-kind and add a touch of color to your life. I am not saying that impulse buying is a good idea, but it might be a good idea to buy things that are more true to your own sensibilities and feelings. Here, Goko-san, who collects interior goods, vintage items, crafts, and local toys from all over the world, without limiting the genre, age, or region, and with her own unique sensibility, tells us how she sees and enjoys things.

vol.22 Modernism Show.

This may sound like a half-announcement, but "TOKYO MODERNISM 2022" will be held at "MUJI HOTEL GINZA" in Ginza from April 7.

Strictly speaking, the pre-event, such as the auction of chairs and the sale of some items, has already begun.

The Modernism Show is a show that exhibits and sells modern design furniture and other items that have taken root in the U.S., mainly from the postwar period known as the mid-century period. The show was held in Japan five and seven years ago, and this will be the first time it has been held in Japan since then.

About 30 stores from all over Japan dealing with various genres will set up booths in rooms on the 7th and 8th floors of "MUJI HOTEL GINZA" to exhibit and sell their products. Of course, the beds and other furnishings you normally see will be removed from the rooms, giving you a different view from the usual.

One of my thoughts in my current work is to see a lot of good things. From art museums to folk art museums, I also believe that it is important to see as many good things as possible in a variety of genres. Then you have a drawer in your head, and it will be used in selecting and making things.

When you have that eye, when you go stocking up, for example, and let your gaze drift through the many items available, your eye will stop at the thing that catches your attention. Sometimes, at that moment, like a ticker tape, the "! mark sometimes appears in my mind like a ticker tape. I think one of the things that naturally comes to my attention when I walk around town is the modern architecture and old buildings.

As the title says, one of the meanings of "how to see things" includes "let's see a lot of good things.

This Modernism Show will surely be one of such opportunities. Please visit the venue.
