PROFILE
Born in 1984. Born in Shizuoka Prefecture. He built his career as both a store manager and a press at the main store of a domestic brand. He later became independent and established the brand "The Day" in the fall of 2023, which proposes high-quality, simple, everyday clothing made in Japan. His hobby is bicycles. He owns five bicycles, including road bikes, gravel road bikes, and mountain bikes. He enjoys riding around town and along the river, and also enjoys the time it takes to get to his destinations.
The second piece, "Retro X".
-You mentioned that you like bicycles, what kind of enjoyment do you get out of them?
Kawachi: I tend to slack off and stroll around town rather than enjoy the speed. But tomorrow I plan to take a day trip with a friend and run about 100 km round trip.
-100 km!
Kawachi: Whenever it suits my friends, I try to go to the upper reaches of the Tama River or to the Saitama area. It is fun.
-What do you find interesting about long rides?
Kawachi: Unlike a car, a bicycle can turn in small circles and is slow. So, even on roads that would pass me by in an instant if I were driving a car, I am often surprised to find out that there are stores like this, or that I can see scenery like this. I also like that it is easy to take shortcuts and detours. I decide on a destination as my goal, but because I enjoy taking side trips, my estimated time of arrival is often late (laughs).
-I like the idea of enjoying the movement. What kind of clothing do you wear when you ride your bike?
Kawachi: Basically, I wear clothes that I make myself, and I combine them with [Patagonia]. I don't wear other outdoor brands; I specialize in "Patagonia.
-For example, what kind of items?
Kawachi: I wore "baggy shorts" from early spring to summer. For a top, I wore a "Houdini" over a T-shirt. I think "Houdini" is the best for riding a bike in that season. Everyone around me wears it. I try not to wear the same color (laughs).
-You like Patagonia, don't you?
Kawachi: Patagonia is my favorite brand, and I have many of them. I've been buying a lot of Patagonia clothing for a long time, but it wasn't until the "Worn Wear Program" started that I was really attracted to the brand.
-The "Worn Wear Program" is a program that we have been working on since 2013 based on the concept of "much better than new. The program provides care and repair services to extend the life of Patagonia products, sharing the value and joy of continued use and attachment. We also buy back unwanted products and resell them.
Kawachi: I was amused by the official's attitude of buying and selling clothes that can still be worn. I think worn-out clothes look beautiful, and the idea of passing on someone else's story is wonderful.
-Today you brought us your personal items from Patagonia. I see that the "Eurex Upcycle Cover" was also made by upcycling.
Kawachi: It's made from leftover wetsuit fabric, and I like it because it's easy to store my PC and various other things.
-I see that you also brought some old catalogs with you.
Kawachi: I brought a catalog from the early '90s, when "Retro X" was first released. I love Patagonia's catalogs. Everything from the photos to the font is cool. They also have field reports, which are articles about outdoor activities that I've been on wearing Patagonia products, and it makes me feel like I've been on a trip myself.
-and "Retro X," which I use on a regular basis.
Kawachi: Retro X" made in 1998. This is actually my second one. I had the exact same one, but I wore it out, so I bought another one. I love the coloring of this "Hunter".
-What else do you like about the place?
Kawachi: When I had just gotten this, I went on a day trip to Kyoto to do some sightseeing. It was midwinter and snowing, and I was wearing only a sweatshirt inside the "Retro X," but it was warm anyway. After walking around all day in the cold, I got so hot that I opened the front zipper. It's windproof, so it's very comfortable even in winter.
