Combining the best of both worlds in equal measure, so that 1 + 1 = 2 + α.
—Was there anything else that was difficult?
Stream: The theme for this project was to incorporate details from both brands in equal measure. So, we asked them to submit a sample based on our request, but at that point, Eastpak pointed out, “With this design, the bottom half is all Jansport—doesn’t that mean it’s not really half and half?”
—How was it resolved?
Stream: In the end, we decided to incorporate an Eastpak zippered pocket (Padded Pak’R style) on the back panel. It was quite a challenge to fine-tune the design while striking that delicate balance.
Kobayashi: What’s most surprising of all is that they’ve attached the shoulder straps from both brands—one on each side. To be honest, this seems to prioritize aesthetics and design over practicality, and I don’t think many backpack brands would go along with something like this.
What kind of design features did you incorporate into the small parts, such as zippers and straps?
Kawakai: The zipper pull and shoulder straps also feature different designs on the left and right sides. The side features a leather pull tab and a uniquely shaped strap, while the side features a cord-style pull tab and a strap with a D-ring. Normally, parts like zippers are often standardized, but from a vintage enthusiast’s perspective, the fact that they’ve deliberately chosen to differentiate them is what really appeals to me.
—How do you find the usability of the design with two separate pockets?
Kawakai: It's absolutely fantastic. This size has its own unique advantages—it helps keep my storage space organized, and it's even more practical than I expected.
—Please tell us what features you focused on and which aspects you find particularly useful.
Stream: I especially like the side pockets. While many backpacks either don’t have side pockets or have ones that are too small to be practical, the side pockets on the “Hybrid Pack” are just the right size, and they’re designed with a drawstring closure to keep items from falling out. I often use them to carry drinks, of course, but also things like sunglasses.
—Looking back on this entire initiative, could you share your thoughts?
Stream: Looking back on this project as a whole, what really stands out to me is how we combined *Jansport*’s signature “Deep Juniper” color with *Eastpak*’s navy shade, “Ultra Marine,” to recreate the classic Black Watch check pattern. Despite the bold pattern, the result is a piece that’s easy to incorporate into everyday outfits, making this a project we’re extremely pleased with.
Stream: As I mentioned at the beginning, it’s a personal honor for me to have been involved in helping *BEAMS* serve as the hub when two brands that wouldn’t normally collaborate joined forces. Even now that it’s complete, I’m still thrilled.
Kobayashi: Looking back, I realize that this collaboration truly showcased the essence of *BEAMS* and was a project worthy of our 50th anniversary. It’s also significant that an item that would normally be completely unthinkable was officially brought to life.
