3. Sustainable initiatives that are kind to the Earth.
The Tokyo Marathon is also implementing cutting-edge initiatives in the area of environmental sustainability. At the “RUN CYCLE SQUARE” within the EXPO venue, participatory sustainability programs were held, including the collection and buyback of used running shoes and the creation of cheering items made from recycled waste materials.
Among these, Yamamoto was particularly interested in a workshop on making recycled sandals using shoe soles and used tires.
"These recycled sandals come in cute colors and are very appealing as a product. I thought it was interesting that they go beyond simply raising environmental awareness to allow people to share that awareness through the joy of crafting," (Yamamoto)
