Explained from Huinamu's point of view! Five reasons why the Tokyo Marathon is so special.

When it comes to the hardest race to enter in Japan, it’s got to be the Tokyo Marathon. As one of only seven races in the world to be part of the “Abbott World Marathon Majors,” it’s one of the country’s largest races, with an application lottery said to have an extremely high competition rate. It’s easy to imagine the unique thrill of running right through the heart of Tokyo, but why does it attract so many runners? To find out, Fuinam Deputy Editor-in-Chief Hiroshi Yamamoto actually participated in the race. From the EXPO to the course on race day and the atmosphere along the route, he examines the event from a participant’s perspective and unravels the five reasons why the Tokyo Marathon is so special.

5. Runners from around the world gathered.

“What struck me while running was the large number of international runners. It felt just like I was participating in an overseas race,” said Yamamoto. And no wonder: of the approximately 39,000 runners in the 2026 Tokyo Marathon, about 17,000 were residents of other countries, accounting for more than 40 percent of the field.

Languages from all over the world fill the air, and the running gear and costumes are incredibly diverse. Being able to experience the world’s running culture firsthand is one of the unique charms of this event.

Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s leading cities, the Tokyo Marathon blends cutting-edge culture and hospitality. There was certainly a reason why it continues to hold such a special place in the hearts of runners.

The next “Tokyo Marathon 2027” is scheduled to take place on March 7, 2027. It will mark the milestone 20th edition of the event. Entry details are scheduled to be announced around late June 2026. While the competition for spots is likely to remain as fierce as ever, you can’t get started unless you enter. If you’re interested, be sure to check for updates.
