Going out of your way to do it leads to abundance.
-First of all, please tell us about the relationship between the three of you.
Yuji Maeda ("Isamu"): Margo" is a two-person director's unit that works on graphics, video, live performances, space production, and fashion show direction. Basically, the two of us direct, with me editing the video and Arata editing the graphics, but we always start with an idea and work on the direction together.
Arata Takahata ("Arata"): Last year was the 10th anniversary of our formation.
Continent: Margo was asked to create a cinematic short movie for Dailik's 2025 Spring/Summer collection. I was introduced to Margo by a stylist I know, and we discussed from the beginning how realistic it would be to create a set of passages that would look like something out of a sci-fi movie.
-continental for this project.First installment, a conversation with film director Yu IrieWhat is the movie "Interstellar" like for "Margo"?
Arata: It's really in my top 3 favorite movies. As far as memories go, I met Isamu in 2013 when we had just become friends and we went to see the movie together at the theater. I remember I thought it was a great movie and when I turned my head to the side, Isamu was crying (laughs).
Isamu: And it was my second time watching it. I watched it alone and thought it was really a great movie. (I went back to see it one more time and cried again, thinking that it would top all of Nolan's films (laughs).
-What kind of relationship do you have with fashion and watches?
Arata: I like to mix high-brand clothes with vintage clothes and no-brand clothes, which I could not wear even if I wanted to until then. I actually bought a watch for the first time last year, but I lost it in an instant.... But then I realized that you can't see a watch from a distance. But I realized again that you can't see a watch from a distance, and that it definitely increases the density of my body. I thought it was an item that would super tighten me up.
Continent: I think the gesture of looking at a watch is cool. Since it has become commonplace to check the time on a cell phone, we no longer look at our arms. That is why, when I do it now, I can feel from my whole body that I am wearing a watch. When I am waiting for the train, I unconsciously do this (gesture of looking at my arm). The gesture is created by the presence of the watch, isn't it?
Arata: Maybe it's equal to saying that a guy wearing a watch is cool. It means the gesture is nice.
Continent: Well, I don't wear it on days when I am mostly at my desk. However, I do wear it on days when I go out to meet people or to a friend's wedding. If anything, it is an item that has a special relationship with people rather than an everyday accessory.
Isamu: A “special relationship”...nice words, and I understand that. I have a longing for watches. I like science fiction-like products, so much so that I spent a while researching the early digital watches (PSR) made by Hamilton. Like with clothes, I get super excited when I can see the background. That's why I was interested in the "Interstellar"-inspired Murph Watch" from "Interstellar" is one example. The "Murph Watch" from "Interstellar" is one example, and the watch from "2001: A Space Odyssey" is another. There is a sense that these little things that tickle my fancy, even if other people don't know about them, make me feel good about myself. I think watches are similar to jewelry. Many people nowadays look at the time on their cell phones, but going out of one's way to check the time on a wristwatch is an extra value that is unique to watches, and as one grows older, one feels a sense of richness.
