Summer days, hot summer days, sweltering days—and this year, “extreme heat days” have been added to the list. This term refers to dangerous days when temperatures reach 40 degrees or higher, and the heatwave in Europe that’s been in the news day after day is a perfect example of this. Even after the summer solstice, Tokyo remained cool and comfortable, but now, with the end of the rainy season approaching, summer is finally kicking into high gear. When I checked the weekly forecast, I saw a string of temperatures all above 30 degrees! Realizing I needed to quickly shift my wardrobe, I set my sights on *Vailance*’s “Seacant Comp Shorts.” These shorts feature the brand’s signature solid look, but if you look closely, you’ll notice a contrast in fabric between the front and back. Plus, thanks to their unique pattern-making, they’ve eliminated the inner seams—the inseams—to ensure maximum comfort. In addition to the front hand pockets, I’m also happy to see zippered pockets on both sides. Of course, the fabric is a technical material with excellent waterproofing, wind resistance, and breathability. The other day, I visited the Herno showroom for the first time. Of course, I’d heard of Herno before, but when I spoke with the manager, I was surprised to learn that the brand has a much richer history than I’d imagined. They’ll be celebrating their 80th anniversary in two years, which also marks the 60th anniversary of their entry into the Japanese market. Starting with coats and other outerwear, they now offer a range of items suited to the times, such as T-shirts, knitwear, and comfortable pants. Among them, this coverall really caught my eye. Denim itself is a relatively recent addition to Herno’s lineup, but I really love the natural look of this piece. It’s not too casual, yet it doesn’t feel as stiff as rigid denim. The brown stitching along the placket, pocket edges, and sleeves, combined with the donut buttons on the front, really accentuate its style. And the collar is a stand-up style you don’t see elsewhere. You can wear it laid down, as shown in the photo, or stand it up—either way, it looks great. A coverall might just be the perfect choice for the start of fall. Being able to imagine that slightly distant future is one of the true joys of fashion.

Here’s the pair I fell in love with at the exhibition this past May. The moment I saw them, I thought they were a nice-looking pair of moccasins, but when I picked them up, I realized they were sneakers. In recent years, Lacoste has released a wide variety of sneakers—from classic court shoes to hybrid designs—and it’s truly impressive how they consistently nail the points that fashion-savvy people are likely to love. When thinking about what pants to pair with these, chinos, jeans, and military-style pants are definitely good choices, but it might also be fun to go against the grain and try them with dress pants. I imagine that more than half of people over 40, like myself, have seen director Shunji Iwai’s film *Fireworks: Should We Watch from Below or from the Side?*. Looking back, it’s a fond memory of watching the “Fukuroi Enshu Fireworks” from a path through the rice fields when I was a child in Shizuoka, my father’s hometown. However, since I’ve never been a fan of the extraordinary crowds at fireworks festivals, as an adult I’ve led a life almost entirely disconnected from fireworks. I do like fireworks themselves—they have a certain sense of wabi-sabi—so I was intrigued by the open-collar shirt featuring sparklers, released as a collaboration between *Buds Pool* and tattoo artist GAKKIN. The highlights include an all-over pattern of sparklers on rayon fabric, black mother-of-pearl cat’s-eye buttons, and embroidery of the classic logo on the left chest pocket. It might be a bit cliché, but wearing this to a fireworks festival or enjoying sparklers would be nice, and it’s a design that foreign visitors would likely appreciate as well. By the way, the handheld fireworks I happened to spot at a convenience store the other day were advertised as producing very little smoke. Maybe I’m just out of the loop, but I couldn’t help but feel that times have changed.

It feels like it adds to the ease of use.
I started commuting by bike half the week starting this spring. Just as I started noticing all sorts of things once I started riding—like wanting an almond-colored chain or being bothered by the basket’s mounting bracket—I also faced the question of what kind of bag would be best. The things I carry for work are just a laptop, glasses, a book, and a reusable bag. Backpacks are convenient, but the problem of sweaty backs is just too real; slinging a tote bag over my shoulder is both inconvenient and dangerous; and putting my laptop in the basket raises concerns about vibrations. It’s not exactly “let the professionals handle it,” but just as there are messenger bags, I feel like a shoulder bag is the best choice. To me, Campanella is someone who looks great in a club. I had never worn Dr. Martens before. The reason was obvious: with my buzz cut and slim build, if I were to wear them, I’d end up looking like a little kid who idolizes the Skins. Because of that self-consciousness, I’d always stayed away from the brand, but thanks to MHL., I finally had the chance to slip a pair on. This first collaboration between these two iconic British brands centers on the classic 3-eyelet “1461” model. It features subtle refinements, such as a padded heel collar and unwaxed flat laces, but what really caught my eye was the double stitching on the toe. It’s a rugged detail typically found on work boots for reinforcement, but when paired with the shoe’s overall clean aesthetic, it even gives off the refined elegance of a straight-tip shoe. The familiar yellow stitching has also been changed to black, so I can wear these without feeling self-conscious or self-conscious. It feels like I’ve finally found the “1461” that’s just right for me.

This happened during a photo shoot on a rainy day the other day. Apparently, the road leading to the studio was one of the steepest in Japan—and I’m not exaggerating when I say I actually slipped and nearly tumbled down the hill. After that terrifying experience, I started looking for a pair of shoes that met three criteria: “water resistance,” “grip,” and “black, so they wouldn’t stand out on set.” Although I do own a few pairs of waterproof shoes, when I took another look at my shoe rack, I realized, surprisingly, that none of them were black… That’s how I came across this collaboration model between Keen and Marmot. It’s based on the classic “Targhee” model, but the design features a black base accented with red—Marmot’s signature color. Rather than being fashion-forward, it’s the calm, stoic color scheme—made possible precisely because these are two outdoor brands—that makes them perfect for on-set use. And with a pair like this, I shouldn’t have to worry about rainy-day shoots or steep slopes. Well, I don’t think I’ll run into situations like that very often, though.
