What I thought of the largest art book festival in Japan.

tokyo art book fair 2017

What I thought when I saw one of the largest art book festivals in Japan.

TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR (TABF 2017), which started in 2009 as the first art book fair in Japan and has been attracting more and more attention every year, was held at a new location in Tennozu Isle this year. We talked with people we were interested in, and admired the works of art. Here are just a few of the many photos and a few words from the event, which even had admission restrictions in place.

It was Saturday afternoon, the third day of the event, when I went to cover the event. There was a long line outside the Terada Warehouse, the venue for the event, and the inside of the venue was also very busy. There were just so many stalls! According to the release, "350 exhibitors, including publishers, bookstores, galleries, and artists from Japan and abroad, will be present at the event. In addition, the event will be held on the largest scale ever in conjunction with galleries and stores located in the same area." This is not enough time to visit all of them. You may not have enough time to visit all of them. ......

A strip of paper like a tavern and a drop of Hamamatsu.

The booth of "spewedition," an artist unit that usually belongs to a gallery and works as artists. The three of us have been working together since last year to do something together, including publishing, music, video, and performance," said the artist.

This is a work (300,000 yen) that "I thought it might be interesting to pick up trash, and I made up my mind along the way" in Hamamatsu, where I headed with no plan, saying, "Let's just decide where we go for now. A zine made from scrapbook copies was also sold at a convenience store.

I visited several times, but the author was always absent.

"A middle-aged photographer...four years of extracurricular activities." One-of-a-kind notebook by Kazuyuki Yamada. The notebooks are truly tasteful, "I dip them in coffee and rag them." The explanation that "we also have zines and other items" was all from a friend who was at the booth. We were not able to meet him.

Our own photographer Taro Hirano was also there. The booth also had a copy of "Tokyo's Workplace," a compilation of HOUYHNHNM's Series.

Etcetera related to printing

Metsu type (used junk type) thrown by First Universal Press at the Letterpress workshop.

At the booth "Paper Drawing," consisting of book designer Naoko Nakui, graphic designer Yoria Oshima, 100% ORANGE, and "Design no Hikidashi" magazine editor Junko Tsuda, recycled paper identical to manga magazines (originally purchased in rolls!) purchased through a special route was cut into A4 and A3 sizes and sold. ) cut into A4 and A3 sizes, which are only sold at TABF every year. This is a very rare item that is only sold at TABF every year. It would be too much fun to make a zine out of it, wouldn't it?

Kyoichi Tsuzuki's booth, where he held a talk show the day before. TOKYO STYLE," which had been out of print for a long time, was long-awaited reprinted as an e-book (huge PDF data in a USB drive)! The original pink rotor was popular among foreign visitors.

A group of one Taiwanese and two Japanese who "quietly produce books day in and day out." They tried their hand at printing on a variety of materials at the booth of the Election Research Institute. In Taiwan, CD jackets and other items are elaborately printed, as it is common practice for designers themselves to visit printing factories to make adjustments. Therefore, they are also highly skilled at printing on materials other than paper. This is a result of that research.

A collection of photographs depicting Chernobyl by Sergej Vutuc, who has been involved in the punk and skate community since the mid-1990s and produces zines. The cover is coated with luminescent paint to evoke the image of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident glowing in the dark. The title "Чистая комната" means "clean room" in Russian. This is also a reference to the site of the former nuclear power plant.

The cover photo is of the artist as a child.

The "Guest Country" section, a special program to unravel the publishing culture of an area, featured "four Asian countries. Art books and zines that are usually unavailable were on display. Next to the books was an exhibition of Tadanori Yokoo's books.

At the INTERNATIONAL SECTION, we also caught up with Artis Ifrach, designer of the fashion brand "ART/C". He was in Japan for the release of his book "ARTC Piece of mind by Artsi Ifrach". Incidentally, the exclusive collection presented at DOVER STREET MARKET GINZA in spring 2016 is all sold out.

This is a quick TABF 2017 report. I'm sure you may have had comments like, "Why didn't you photograph that booth?" or "That one is a must!" I'm sure some of you may be thinking, "Why didn't you take pictures of that booth? However, I too had received advance information through social networking sites that people I knew and worked with were setting up booths, but I couldn't find anyone and went to ....... If I wanted to cover all the related events around the venue, I would have had to be prepared to go to all four days of the event.
