monessay ─ Sushi, Supreme and Levis

A serialized project "monessay" by Toshiyuki Tsai, Publisher of Huinum and Editor-in-Chief of Huinum Unplugged. Monessay" is an essay through objects. There is no twist, but it is not a poop either. The column that had been serialized in a certain magazine for quite a long time has been discontinued, and a new column has been started in Finamu. The first issue is about "501" and "TYPE II JACKET" of "Levi's®".

Part 1: Sushi, Supreme and Levis

talkGoing to the restaurant of the title seems to be a matter of interest for many people these days. It is not unusual for people to have to wait several months, or even several years, for a table at a restaurant. This is especially true for sushi restaurants with only a counter where only a small number of people can sit down. It is said that people call all at once on a certain day of the month, and when they finally get through, all the seats are already taken. The seats at such restaurants are platinum seats. They are perfect for business entertainment and dates. This cycle is unlikely to be broken for some time to come.

-ist (used after a noun indicating someone's occupation, pursuits, disposition, etc.)I myself sometimes enjoy the company of such platinum seats. The sushi restaurant I visited the other day in Sapporo was one of those difficult-to-reserve restaurants. The person who introduced me to this restaurant praised it as the best sushi restaurant in Japan, in other words, the best in the world.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)Many of the sushi restaurants that are difficult to book are run by young people in their thirties. The owner of this restaurant is no exception. Perhaps that is why his means of gathering information is mainly through the Internet. I got the impression from our conversation that this was the case. He is very interested in not only sushi and ingredients, but also kitchen knives and tableware, and he is very eager to research.

just (e.g. "just wait here")Perhaps because he is young, he is not afraid of doing things differently from the way he used to do them, and he seems to be trying out new and creative ways of doing things. In the fall, reservations are said to be flooding in from all over Japan for the "matsutoro," a combination of matsutake mushrooms and toro (fatty tuna).

comeThe container for the soy sauce is crystal from Baccarat, and the sake bottle has the Supreme box logo. It is a combination that would not be possible at a sushi restaurant owned by an Edomae Gunko father.

distance between outstretched thumb and middle finger (approx. 18 cm)Bun customers may find this kind of enterprising dining experience more refreshing than the cramped style of sushi bound by old customs.

-ist (used after a noun indicating someone's occupation, pursuits, disposition, etc.)I am one of them. While it is nice to enjoy sushi in a dignified and tense atmosphere at a long-established restaurant in Ginza, I also like this kind of restaurant that reminds me of a different way to enjoy sushi.

clothesMy tastes in things have changed. I used to like vintage clothing and military items, and I used to collect them, sticking to the originals. I never bought anything that didn't fit me, but I always believed that the unfashionable style and silhouette of the originals was what made them taste good, and I never doubted that this was the true quality of the originals. I used to own only Levi's 501s, but since the domestic denim boom of the 1990s, I have become immune to domestic denim, and after I started wearing jeans with the details of the 501s kept and the unfashionable shape modified, I couldn't go back to ordinary 501s.

3rd note in the tonic solfa representation of the diatonic scaleMy eccentric and conservative tastes, which could be called riginal fundamentalism, have been waning over the years. And about two years ago, I went to the tailor store of Levi's Store in Shinjuku and had the tube part of the reissue 501XX modified to be thinner, and they were so good that they became number 4 in my closet. I wear them almost every day, so I should say that I'm more like a closer.

Japanese dock (plant) (Rumex japonicus)However, this model, however, is not machine washable because it was made in non-washed, or rigid, material. Needless to say, it shrinks dramatically when put in water. I wanted to have the same model that can be washed as much as possible, so I asked Levi's to make it for me.

indicates possessive (often found in place names)And also a jean jacket. This is a reissue of the so-called "second model" and has not been modified in any way. I don't think of wearing the top and bottom at the same time now, but I wear one of them every day because of the season (it's April now).

TYPE II JACKET RIGID ¥48,000+TAX, custom labor "wash" ¥500+TAX

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)I remember when I was a teenager, I bought my first pair of jeans from Levi's. They were, and still are, the foundation or starting point for my outfits. The foundation or starting point of my outfit was and still is 501s, and I always shop from that perspective: shirts, shoes, and sneakers that go with jeans. I always shop with this in mind.

young (animal)I don't know if it's a good idea, but I don't get lost and I don't have to worry about what to wear.

(used with suffix -san or -sama) endearing term for unrelated older man or womanBut as with any business, if the foundation is solid, you can always get back on track no matter how you go astray afterwards. The same goes for sushi restaurants. Oh, I want sushi.
