Keisuke Nakata , a british hope who goes back and forth between modeling and acting.
Keisuke Nakata is a model and young actor who is currently attracting attention from various fields. He made his modeling debut in 2014 as a Men's Non-No exclusive model, and currently plays the role of Eibi Sugimaru, a regular in the new series of "Boys Over Flowers" that started on April 17, "Hananochi Harure - Hana Otoko Next Season" (TBS, on air every Tuesday from 10:00 pm). He also plays the role of Eibi Sugimaru in the fashion scene. In the fashion scene, he has been active in "Men's Non-No" and is stylish enough to have his personal clothing style featured in international street snapshots. We interviewed him about the process of his career as a model and actor, and his personal values, which have changed since his high school days when he spent most of his time in club activities.
Mr. Nakata is attracting a lot of attention as an up-coming figure, but how did you get to your current situation?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldI think the main reason I got into this industry was my love of clothes. The turning point for me came at the end of my high school years when I started working at a vintage clothing store called "SULLEN" in Jinnan, Shibuya.
It's a famous restaurant, isn't it? How did you come to work there?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldWhen I was in high school, I used to go around on social media looking for vintage clothing stores. One of them was Saren. When I made my first purchase, I was allowed to make a loyalty card, and there was a field for me to write my number on it. About three days after I made the purchase, I received a phone call at the end of a high school class. For a moment I thought I had done something wrong.
Are you saying that you received a direct call to speak with us?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldThat's right. The owner said, "The store is now in its second year, so I'm thinking of hiring a part-timer. I was invited to join the shop. I knew that sooner or later I wanted to work part-time at a used clothing store, so it was a fateful event for me. At the time, I was buying a lot of clothes while attending school, working both convenience store and thrift store jobs. Eventually, I was allowed to go on buying trips, and I really experienced a lot at "Saren.
You really worked there until recently, didn't you? Is that where you developed your knowledge and sensitivity to fashion?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldThat's right. The store manager liked maison brands as much as vintage clothes, and proposed a style that made vintage clothes look like mode. There may be a lot of this now, but at the time it was fresh. So naturally, I started checking all the collections. I began to look at vintage clothing with the idea that it would fit in with this season's "˜like' styling, or that this kind of sizing would be current. So I don't think that I only wear vintage clothes because I used to work at a vintage clothing store.
Indeed, I sense Mr. Nakada's style in the way he wears both vintage and maison clothes regardless of whether they are vintage or maison. Do you have any other styling preferences?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldI like to wear it in a rather minimalist, color-controlled way. I may also be very particular about the silhouettes and materials I like. I also pay more attention to the balance of the total look than to the individual items that pack a punch. Among these, I think I am particularly particular about the feet.
Is it the balance between pants and shoes?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldYes, I have a pair of jeans that I like to wear with my jeans. I tend to wear slim pants about 9.5' in length and match them with USA Converse or the like. On the other hand, if the sneakers are voluminous, I match them with full-length pants that are a little thicker or a little flared. I am particular about the compatibility between the hem of the pants and the form of the shoes. I also try not to look like I'm wearing this brand (laughs). I don't think it's a waste of time to enjoy fashion if I just wear that brand. So I want to wear whatever brand I feel comfortable with, as long as it fits my own theory.
While you were immersed in fashion at the vintage clothing store, you also gained exposure as a model around the same time.
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldI had been appearing in magazines since I was a high school student, doing snapshots and such, and it was around that time that I became an exclusive model for "Men's Non-No. As I worked as a model, I began to think that my involvement with fashion was not limited to serving customers in stores. I started to think that modeling was not the only way to be involved in fashion, because you can also be involved in fashion through modeling. I gradually got into the swing of things, and about a year ago I was no longer able to stand in the store.
In addition to your work as a model, your recent moves as an actor have been attracting a lot of attention. You are currently starring in the TBS Tuesday drama "Hana-no-chi-Harure: Hanamoto Next Season," but could you tell us about your work as an actor?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldIn my case, I did not start modeling because I wanted to be an actor from the beginning, but because I started modeling because I liked clothes, so it was not a direct process. When it was decided that I was going to be in a movie, I was still in the process of training for the movie without having a clear idea of what I wanted to do. But when the movie came out, even though the scene was only a few minutes long, my family, relatives, and good friends said, "I never thought I would see Keisuke on screen," and that made me very happy. I felt a sense of fulfillment that was completely different from when I started modeling because I liked clothes. I realized that it was no longer possible to do things based on my own selfishness or moods. From there, I began to ask myself whether I was working hard enough to be told by others that I was doing my best. I made up my mind that if I decided to do something, I had to do it properly. That is why I am putting so much effort into my acting career now.
So you became more and more aware of it after doing it.
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldWhen I reexamined my work as an actor from a completely different perspective from that of a model, I gradually came to realize that I, too, am receiving wonderful values and inspiration from the people on the screen and, of course, the many staff members who create them. It may be an exaggeration, but I began to think that it would be nice if I could also inspire people and influence their way of life in a positive way. I now believe that this is a profession worth devoting my life to. However, I am still in my infancy (laughs).
Lastly, please tell us about the highlights of the drama "Hana-no-chi-Harure: Hana Otoko Next Season," which is currently airing.
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldTen years after "Boys Over Flowers," the setting is a new love story at Eitoku Gakuen, where the F4 used to be. In this work, the top group at the school is called the C5, and unlike the F4, who embodied the perfect group of boys, everyone is still in their infancy. Of course, the main focus of the story is love, but how each of them grows as a person is also a highlight of "Hana-no-Hare - Hana Otoko Next Season".
It has a different charm from that of "Boys Over Flowers. Can you tell us about the specific story?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldAn important aspect of this work is the presence of other schools. Momonoen Academy is in hot pursuit of Eitoku Gakuen in terms of both popularity and name recognition. The leader of the C5, Haruto Kaguragi, who has feelings for the main character, Oto Edogawa, played by Hana Sugisaki, has a love rival, a so-called rivalry, in the form of Tenma Hase, the student council president of Momonoen Gakuen. I think it is interesting that such a correlation expands the story.
What do you think of Mr. Nakata's role and the appeal of his character?
rice paddy field in the middle of a fieldThe character I play, Sugimaru Eibi, is, in a word, a martial artist of few words. He is a bit of a natural and often makes me laugh. However, each word he says has weight and makes his presence felt in important scenes. I would be happy if the audience can feel his pure and friendly personality. As we approach the midpoint of the film, there is a sudden development awaiting us. The characters from "Boys Over Flowers" will also appear, so that will be a highlight as well. I hope you will continue to enjoy the show!
