Marika Ito and Bruna Boyne, two personalities that resonate with each other.
Brunavoyne, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, is known for its original designs. The brand's overwhelming individuality is still alive and well in the 2018 AW season under the theme of "freedom and pioneering. What would happen if former Nogizaka 46 member Marika Ito tried on these clothes? How would she, who continues to transmit the same exceptional individuality through her activities in fashion and art, wear and express the unique clothing of "Brunavoin," which has both one and two quirks? For this issue, we conducted a photo shoot with her styling centered on the brand's iconic denim. The photographs reveal two distinct personalities that resonate with each other.
Tarzan Hoodie shirt ¥26,000+TAX, Frank Henry ¥10,000+TAX, March denim ¥28,000+TAX, Snake Bangle Brass S ¥15,000+TAX (Brunavoyne),〈Crown〉 ¥9,200+TAX (GMTinc.)
When I saw it from a distance, I thought it was a strange staggered plaid shirt, but when I looked closer, I realized it was a pattern of a human running (Tarzan) (laugh). When I see something or a design that is different from others, I get a strange sense of mission that I have to buy it (laughs).
STYLE 2
Gare G-jan ¥55,000+TAX, Felicin Poket T ¥7,500+TAX, Mirai Kaitaku denim ¥40,000+TAX, Ben Vara's silver tears ¥70,000+TAX, Wrestler face badge 1 ¥3,000+TAX, Love & Peace pin badge ¥1,800+TAX, poison apple pin badge ¥1,800+TAX (Brunavoyne), Fabio Rusconi ¥26,000 + TAX (GMTinc.)
The denim embroidered with the words "freedom and pioneering" is just so innovative. I tried it on, imagining in my mind that it was the theme of the Brunavoyne brand. Also, I had just recently bought an orange jacket, so I was interested in this jacket as well. I don't have a set color in mind, but I like to experiment with different colors.
STYLE 3
Lepra coat ¥60,000+tax, Felicin tank ¥7,000+tax, Felicin bush pants AG ¥24,000+tax, Fairy Smith belt narrow ¥9,000+tax (Brunavoyne), Fabio Lusconi ¥23,000+tax (GMTinc.)
It's the most feminine outfit I've worn this time. The shoulders of the coat are pulled back, and the waist is marked with a belt. It's an easy-to-imitate look, so I'm going to try it myself right away. The coat itself is made of a hard, menswear-like material, but it's interesting how it gives a different impression depending on the items you match it with and how you wear it.
STYLE 4
Bianca (BUT Line) ¥90,000+TAX, Galitrap Stand Shirt ¥26,000+TAX, Felicin Tank ¥7,000+TAX, Felicin Denim OW ¥18,000+TAX, Wave Bangle S ¥38,000+TAX, River Bangle S ¥38,000+TAX, Galitrap Wallet Chain ¥85,000+TAX TAX, Big Galitrap bracelet ¥74,000+TAX, Galitrap bracelet ¥30,000+TAX, Galitrap wallet chain ¥85,000+TAX (Bruna Boin), Diego Bellini ¥26,000+TAX (GMTinc.)
I like this jacket a lot! I have never seen a leather china jacket before. It is a very menswear-like item, but I thought it would be cute for women to wear. I usually go to thrift stores and look at both men's and women's clothing, so I was able to wear this jacket naturally in the same way.
STYLE 5
Ciao Shirt ¥29,000+TAX, Child Wrestler Striped T ¥11,000+TAX, Converted Denim ¥28,000+TAX, River Bangle Brass S ¥15,000+TAX, Wave Bangle Brass S ¥15,000+TAX, Loop Bangle Brass ¥12,000+TAX Galitrap wallet chain ¥85,000+TAX, Short Galitrap wallet chain ¥72,000+TAX, Galitrap wallet chain brass ¥38,000+TAX (Brunavoyne), Fabio Lusconi ¥26,000+TAX (GMTinc.)
It has a lot of interesting embroidery motifs, such as cars and tomatoes, and I thought it would be cute if a man wore it. I also personally like the accessories that go with it. Lately, I've been into wearing a lot of hard accessories. I like it when women dare to wear such heavy accessories.
Interview With Marika Ito
Fashion and art are "ingrained" in me.
Mr. Ito has known Bruna Boyne for a long time.
Ito.My mother took me to the opening reception of Bruna Boin's Daikanyama store when I was 14 years old, before I joined Nogizaka46. At the time, it was men's clothing, and I didn't think anything of it, but it left a lasting impression on me. When I think about it, now that I am 22 years old, I am deeply moved that we met again and had the opportunity to shoot together for work. I feel like I've grown up too (laughs).
What is your impression of Bruna Boin's clothing now that you have touched it again?
Ito.The play of design is very unique, with patterns and embroidery motifs that can't be found anywhere else. I was surprised at the wide variety of denim pants, which are said to be the brand's standard item, from basic to punchy designs. Moreover, when I tried them on, I found that they all had a beautiful silhouette and were comfortable to wear. And the accessories are my favorite taste, especially the heavy silver bangles, which made me want them as soon as I saw them. I thought "I want it!
You asked them to wear mainly men's clothes for this shoot.
Ito.I usually like vintage clothing and wear it often, but at that time I choose designs I like without being particularly conscious of men's or women's clothing, so I usually wear men's clothes as well. So I didn't have much resistance, but it was the first time for me to wear ready-to-wear men's clothes like this, so it was a new experience for me. And when I tried it on, I found that I fit in surprisingly well and looked totally good. It would be cute if a girl dared to wear men's clothes.
You wore men's clothes and unique "Brunavoin" clothes without any sense of discomfort, didn't you? Since you were a member of Nogizaka46, you have always had a distinct individuality in your hobbies such as fashion and art. Where did this individuality come from?
Ito.I think my love for fashion and art came from my family environment (my mother is a fashion designer). But later, as I was involved in the activities of Nogizaka46, I had more opportunities to talk directly with people around me who were working in creative fields, and that gradually changed. I became more interested in the deeper aspects of the things I liked and began to research them in more detail in my own way. For example, with clothes, I began to look not only at the shape, but also at the materials and details. And that made it more fun to choose.
Even looking at one of their outfits today or how they behaved during the photo shoot, I could see how much they love clothes and fashion.
Ito.I have always really liked clothes. I grew up in such a family environment. I have been choosing my own clothes and layering them since I was in elementary school (laughs).
By the way, you styled the photo book you released this year, didn't you? You also participate in the Shibukaru Festival as one of the creators, hold private exhibitions, and write a series of illustrations for a magazine.
Ito.Personally, I don't intend to focus exclusively on this, but I have many opportunities to receive such work. However, for me, activities such as private exhibitions and illustrations are not something I aim for, but rather something that is a normal part of my life, just like clothes and fashion.
I see. That is very typical of you, isn't it? Last but not least, please tell us about your future activities and goals.
Ito.In the future, I would like to do my best in acting and visual arts as well, since I love them. I would like to improve my skills through experience. Of course, it is important to make the most of my individuality, but I don't think that will necessarily be the main focus of my activities. It is just a part of my hobby that leads directly to my work. Even if I don't pay special attention to that, I am sure that my individuality will never disappear, and it is something I cannot avoid.
