Do you Know NEGRO LEAGUES?

An alternative baseball cap from New Era. Six styles clad in the personality of the Negro Leagues.

New Era® has earned an unshakeable position as the standard brand for headwear. The brand has established a close relationship with the sports scene, serving as the only official supplier of caps for Major League Baseball (MLB) players. This time, the brand is releasing the official caps of the "Negro League," an African-American baseball league that existed from the 1920s to the 1960s. The items worn by the players in this alternative league have a unique aura that major teams do not have. Let us introduce you to these Negro League caps along with the styles of six creators.

A Negro League baseball cap with a distinctive design that stands out.

The Negro Leagues existed in the United States from the 1920s through the 1960s. The players were African-American, and the Negro Leagues attracted attention as a league that stood apart from Major League Baseball (MLB). Many MLB teams were attracted to the Negro Leagues, and many players were recruited from the Negro Leagues. However, due to the absence of popular players, the league gradually went into decline.

The Negro Leagues are an alternative aspect of American baseball history, and their appeal can be said to lie in their unique design. Its unique logo and distinctive use of color give it a sharpness and aura that no other current baseball team has.

For this issue, we asked six creators active in the field of fashion to wear such official caps of the Negro Leagues. How do their personalities match their styles? Please take a look.

stylist

So Matsukawathree

Ms. Matsukawa, who is active in various fields as a stylist, appeared with her colorful styling. He was inspired by the fashion of the locals after a recent trip to Los Angeles for work.

They were all wearing T-shirts and work pants with skate shoes on their feet. And African-Americans look good in colorful clothes. I was really influenced by that, and until recently I often coordinated my outfits with monotone colors, but since I came back I've been using more colors.

Mr. Matsukawa says he usually wears hats. He says it is "a privilege for those who work in the fashion industry.

Once upon a time, I was too childish and didn't wear it much. But as I got older, I started to feel comfortable wearing them. These days, my boom is to wear a New Era when I play golf (laughs).

Mr. Matsukawa chose a 59FIFTY® from "Louisville Black Caps" with its eye-catching red and black coloring. It gives the open-ended coordination a moderate tightness.

It still has a classic feel to it. The logo design is unique, too. I had never heard of the Negro Leagues, but it's cool.

BEABER SAKOTA Owner

Masaki Sakodathree

I'm a barber, so I probably shouldn't really wear a hat or anything, but I do (laughs).

Masateru Sakoda, who runs his own barber store "Barber Sakota" in Shimotakaido, says so with a laugh. His love of hats has grown to such an extent that he once created his own original items and sold them in his store.

I like jet caps and have many of them, but of course I also wear baseball caps. I have a classic New Era cap with the New York Yankees logo on it. I saw Goro-san of "MIN-NANO" in Shimokitazawa wearing one the other day, and I wanted one (laughs). (Laughs.) The brand has a strong hip-hop image, but the way Goro-san was wearing it didn't look hip-hop at all, it looked so cool.

Mr. Sakoda says he likes hats with simple designs. On this day, he selected a 59FIFTY® from the "Newark Eagles.

I'm wearing blue today because I've been in the mood for shirts lately, and I'm thinking of wearing it as a woven jacket this fall. MLB caps are already recognized as a standard item, but I had never seen the 'Negro Leagues' logo on any of the teams, so it would be nice not to look like anyone else."

The "Newark Eagles" is a product of the "Newark Eagles" with the letter "E" drawn in a strong font. The design is based on the logo and coloring used in 1946. ¥5,500+tax

illustrator

facethree

When I wear a hat, I tend to pick up these baseball caps and jet caps."

Face, who is active as an illustrator in a variety of media, says, "I'm very happy to be able to show you my collection of New Era items. Of course, many of the items in his collection are from the New Era brand.

New Era may have a strong image associated with hip-hop, but I have the impression that it is a more major brand. I think New Era is a brand that has become more commonplace, as if you could see a regular guy wearing one on the streets of New York City.

Because of this, Face chose the "New York Black Yankees" 9FIFTY™. The blue graphics on the hoodie match well with the navy base color.

I had no idea that the "Negro Leagues" existed. I usually wear an MLB Yankees cap, so I chose something similar. I think it's just right for me to match it with my usual outfit without being conscious of it.

The New York Black Yankees were established in 1931. The simple "NY" logo drawn in a somewhat rounded font is expressed in three-dimensional embroidery. The basic coloring of navy and white matches any style. ¥5,000+TAX

interior stylist

Shinya Endothree

Shinya Endo is an interior stylist who creates spaces for magazines, films, window displays, and many other places. He is also a great lover of hats.

I guess when I was a college student, I started wearing hats a lot. I started wearing hats to accentuate my fashion. I also had long hair at the time, so I wore hats to tie it up (laughs).

What are you conscious of when you wear baseball caps like this one?

Caps with visors tend to make me look childish, so I tend to dress a little nicer or more subdued to avoid looking too young. New Era is a brand that is associated with various cultures. If you see a favorite artist wearing a cap or a favorite team wearing a cap, it gives meaning to what you are wearing and makes it easier to assert yourself. Brands like that are hard to come by."

Although Mr. Endo is such a person, this was his first time to see the "Negro League" items. The team he chose was "Baltimore Black Socks" with its unique color scheme.

I often wear earth colors such as khaki and brown. So I chose this one because I thought the orange would accentuate the colors while blending in with them. The logo is simple, but the color scheme has a nice impact.

The "Baltimore Black Socks" item has a very old-school logo that is very attractive. The brown and orange color scheme leaves a lasting impact, and will perform best as a coordinating accent. ¥5,500+TAX

photographer

Taro Hirayamathree

Taro Hirayama is a photographer working mainly for fashion magazines. Whenever he shows up for a photo shoot, he is always wearing a baseball cap, and his light footsteps are impressive as he enters the scene.

I have been wearing hats since I was in junior high school. At that time, I borrowed caskets and other hats from my father. At first I wore them for fashion, but nowadays I tend to wear them when I don't want to bother setting my hair (laughs).

Hirayama's hat collection includes items from New Era, of course.

When I think of New Era, the image of baseball is strong in my mind. But I didn't know about the Negro Leagues. There are many unusual logos, and they are interesting in a different way from MLB.

Mr. Hirayama's choice this time was an item from "Homestead Grays.

I wore a navy shirt today, so I chose a cap in the same color to match. The white piping is a nice accent. Since I am in the habit of taking pictures, I basically always wear something that is easy to move in. So my silhouette is always loose (laughs)."

The "G" logo sitting on the navy body of this "Homestead Grays" cap gives an imposing and masculine impression. The white piping extending from the top button also accentuates the design and gives it a somewhat fresh feel. ¥5,500+TAX

A_UNN PR

Makoto Takahatathree

I knew that the Negro Leagues existed, but I didn't know how many teams there were. So I learned a lot from seeing this collection. I got the impression that the products are simple, yet powerful and sharp.

Makoto Takahata of A_UNN PR responded wearing a "Birmingham Black Barons" cap with three "B "s in a row. The casual mood of the "Negro Leagues" cap is neutralized by the suit he wears to balance it out.

When I wear a cap, I can't help but give a strong street impression, so I wore a suit to avoid that. This kind of balance is just right for me right now."

While New Era is the official supplier of caps for MLB players, it also finds fun in focusing on niche cultures, such as the "Negro Leagues. When we asked him about his image of the brand, he responded, "I think it's a good thing.

What do you think of denim? What do you think of white T-shirts? There is always a brand that comes to mind when asked, "What do you think of denim? And when asked, "What do you think of hats? I think many people would answer "New Era" first. It is the standard for hats, and it is a brand like the king that everyone knows. I think that's why New Era is closely connected to a wide range of cultures, including sports, fashion, and music.

Birmingham Black Barons / 9FIFTY™.

The "Birmingham Black Barons" has an overwhelming impact despite its simple configuration of just three "B" letters in a row. The ability to wear logo designs that would be unthinkable today is one of the charms of the "Negro Leagues" collection. ¥5,000+TAX
