monessay ─ hot day

monessay - extremely hot day

This is "monessay," a series of essays by Toshiyuki Tsai, publisher of Huinum and editor-in-chief of Huinum Unplugged. It is an essay through objects, so it is called "monessay." There is no twist, but it is not a poop, either. The column that had been serialized in a certain magazine for quite a long time has been discontinued, and a new column has been started in Finamu. This time, we will be looking at Patagonia's "Baggies Shorts.

The 8th heat wave day

recordIt is hard to remember, but when I was a child in the 1960s, even in the hottest part of the summer, the temperature was barely above 30 degrees Celsius. It was hottest in August, and I think it peaked around the time of the Obon Festival. Insect catching and playing in the river were not life-threatening activities. But before we knew it, the term "extremely hot day" came into use.

keyAccording to a survey, the number of days with a maximum temperature exceeding 35 degrees Celsius has increased rapidly since the beginning of the 1990s. Then, in August 2007, 40.9 degrees was observed in Kumagaya, Saitama and Tajimi, Gifu. This was the first time in 74 years that the record had been broken at that point. This year, the record may possibly be surpassed. I am writing this on July 20. Maybe it has been updated?

young (animal)I can't work outside when it's so hot. Or rather, I can't walk outside with clothes on. I would like to allow people with hard jobs to wear shorts and polo shirts. Society should recognize that. People from India are surprised at this heat.

view (of life, etc.)When I turned around, I found that our company has a free dress code, so all the boys were wearing T-shirts and short pants. Some of them were even wearing beeswax. It was as if they were going to the beach. I should give them floating bags or underwater glasses as a gift.

just (e.g. "just try it")The female staff members are not that casual. There are no miniskirts or even short pants. That is fine because it does not disturb public morals. When I go to some fashion brand for work or other, I have a hard time keeping my eyes off women who are too revealing.

-ist (used after a noun indicating someone's occupation, pursuits, disposition, etc.)I can only wear shorts this time of year. Jeans are already a discipline. I prefer to wear fatigues-type shorts. I can't come to work in surf shorts.

andHowever, looking around the company, there is a high ratio of Patagonia's "baggy shorts. They are supposedly amphibious shorts. But they look like ordinary shorts, so they are still good. The slightly shorter length of the shorts and the slightly looser width of the tube give them a modern, go-out look. In other words, they look like something you would wear to a summer festival. I don't mean to say that the company is not a festival, but I feel that they should be free to do what they want.

young (animal)I would like to extend the freedom of "Cool Biz" to all types of jobs. It will be difficult to survive the summer in Japan with the level of Cool Biz attire recommended by the governor of Tokyo.

light (e.g. colour, color)Incidentally, these baggy shorts are selling so well that the black ones are almost sold out.
So please do not contact the manufacturer. There seem to be some other colors and patterns available, so please buy those or find them when you go abroad. Or next year.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)I'm curious about it. I'm going abroad next month, so I'll look for it.
