monessay - don't cover your head and don't cover your ass

This is "monessay," a series of essays by Toshiyuki Tsai, publisher of Huinum and editor-in-chief of Huinum Unplugged. It is an essay through objects, so it is called "monessay." There is no twist, but it is not a poop, either. The column that had been serialized in a certain magazine for quite a long time has been discontinued, and a new column has been started in Finamu. This time, we'll be looking at J&M Davidson's "Mesh Belt.

Part 9: Don't cover your head and don't cover your bottom

child (esp. of the young son of someone of high social standing)Back in the 1960s, when there was no Internet, most of the fashion information available was from magazines. Information was limited and inaccurate to an extent that is hard to imagine today. Living in a provincial city was an additional disadvantage. So I devoured every magazine I could get my hands on.

(after noun, adjective-stem or plain verb) just keepsThey never suspected fake news or advertisements, and genuinely enjoyed the articles and features. In other words, this is a generation that was manipulated by the magazines.

imageThere is no end to the number of things I have bought or styles I have imitated because of the echoes.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)One of the most important things to remember is that fashion starts from the feet up. No matter how good you look, if your feet are neglected, everything will be ruined.

young (animal)The same thing was claimed in all the magazines. I certainly think that is the essence of the clothing.

just (e.g. "just wait here")Japan was still a developing country in the men's fashion scene, and many men could barely afford to buy DC and import brand clothes, let alone shoes. Don't be so fussy. No matter how many expensive items you wear, you can't be sure of where you are coming from.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)That's why I bought Alden loafers and stuff like that when I was still a youngster. I was working part-time at a select store, so I was able to buy them through company sales. Red Wing, Church, Florsheim. For a young guy, these shoes were like stars of the sky. I spent most of the money from my part-time job there. Paradoxically, this meant that I neglected what to wear. So I ended up wearing jeans and Lacoste polos all year round. I am ashamed to say that I still wear the same outfit.

Japanese dock (plant) (Rumex japonicus)However, he was indifferent to the belt.

fThere was an instruction in fashion magazines to match the color of the shoes with the color of the belt, but I had no money to spend on a belt. I can't remember what kind of belt I was wearing at the time. I'm sure it was something appropriate.

comradeWhen was the last time you found a very thick 5cm wide mesh belt in an import store in Shibuya where people worked? A thickly woven belt made of bridle leather. An overwhelming sense of presence.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)That was my first encounter with J&M Davidson. Since then, I have decided to wear my belts here.

child (esp. of the young son of someone of high social standing)People see that my body shape hasn't changed since I was a kid, but I've expanded slightly, so the ones I bought in the past are no longer as small as I'd like them to be.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)So rather recently, I just added a new friend. Two of them are natural nude leather and brown.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)I was surprised at the cashier's price. It cost more than twice as much as the one I bought a long time ago. And it was half the width.

EuropeI was reminded once again that U.S. countries are inflationary.
