NO GAME, NO LIFE

The dazzling world of online games, guided by the creator game team DHC.

Did you know that this spring, an account called "DHC" was added to the Huinamu blog, where creators, stores, and a wide variety of other people gather? The "Dekoboko Happy Club" or "DHC" is a group of six creators, including illustrators, designers, store owners, brand owners, and editors, who gather online at night to play games, which are then streamed on video. Nowadays, "e-sports (gaming)" is recognized as an official event of the "Asian Olympic Games" and professional gamers are winning millions of dollars in prize money one after another. The gaming industry is certainly on the rise, as evidenced by the enthusiasm of popular Canadian rapper Drake. However, many people who love fashion are not so familiar with games. So, putting aside all the complicated talk, we first asked the members of "DHC" to talk about the appeal of games in depth.

Dekoboko Happy Club a.k.a. DHC

This group of gamers consists of creators who have been members of Huinamu Blog since March of this year. They meet online and work on games at night in front of their monitors. They mainly play "Rainbow six siege".

SHIN (Graphic Designer)

face (illustrator, artist)

TEITO (LOPY HOTEL Designer)

Nu (Editor / AUTUMN inc.)

Aimi (Illustrator / I&ME Designer)

Chi (SUPPLY / BACKDOOR)

France's Griezmann and rapper Drake are also hooked!

Please begin by introducing yourselves to the members.

ShinI am Shin, a graphic designer.

faceIllustrator Face.

TeitoMy name is Teito. My name is Teito, and I run a brand called "LOOPY HOTEL.

NuI am a freelance editor, Nu.

AimiI am Aimi, an illustrator. I am the only one in red.

ChiMy name is Chi, and I run a store called "BACKDOOR" and an online store called "SUPPLY TOKYO.

What kind of a gathering is DHC?

ShinWe have always been good friends in our private lives. One day, we were all having a drink near our house, and I told him I had something to show him, so I invited him to my house.

faceIt was just about a year ago. The thing I wanted to show them was a game, and when we played it while drunk, everyone was hooked (laughs). I had never played games before, but I immediately went out to buy a PlayStation.

What game was it?

ShinRainbow Six Siege is a competitive online game.

Like "Metal Gear Solid"?

ShinMetal Gear is a game where you fight against a computer, but Rainbow Six Siege is man versus man.

In other words, you play against someone who is playing somewhere online.

ShinThat's right. To put it simply, it's like playing a survival game online.

ChiWe play in teams of five.

faceWe decided to name the team "Dekoboko Happy Club" if we were going to go to the trouble. So we took the first letter of the name "DHC".

Is there any other popular software?

NuThen there is "Fortnite. This is a battle royale type game where 100 players try to defeat each other on the field in various ways to determine who will be the last one standing. And it's free.

faceAlso, a game called "PUBG" was released last year and is very popular right now. Fortnite" is another battle royale type game that everyone is playing. There is also the Chinese game "Wilderness Action.

TeitoFortnite" can be played on PlayStation, PS4, Xbox, and smartphones, and is probably the most popular because of its cross-play capabilities.

ShinOf these, "Fortnite" is the most populist.

ChiIt looks like the rapper Drake and other players who were at the World Cup are doing it too.

NuCome to think of it, Griezmann of the French national team also did the "Fortnite" dance when he scored at the World Cup.

faceIt seems the German national team was playing "Fortnite" until morning even during the World Cup (laughs).

ChiI see that Stray Rats in Miami, which I sell at my store, The Good Company in New York, and members of Virgil Normal and Supreme in Los Angeles are also doing this.

It's a busy music, sports, and street neighborhood.

ShinFortnite" is also a game that takes a look at actual street culture and incorporates it into the game. They also use trap-like music.

faceYou also do things like crossover with the real world.

What does that mean?

ShinThe 3-D sign for the hamburger joint in the game suddenly disappeared online. It was like it had fallen into the desert near Los Angeles one day.

ShinA local resident found it and posted it on Twitter, and it became a buzz. Everyone went to the site to see it, but there was a security guard standing there, and when you approached him, he gave you a piece of paper. The paper had some kind of hints about the next stage.

That's a great way to do PR. That's how you firmly hold the hearts and minds of your fans.

ShinYes, it is. The game is well thought out to keep the fans coming back. Rainbow Six Siege," which we are playing, is updated about four times a year.

What happens when it is updated?

ShinLike updating the OS of an iPhone, the design of the stages will change completely. Then you can play the game again with a fresh mind.

However, doing it with a stranger online may seem daunting to beginners.

faceIn both "Rainbow Six Siege" and "Fortnite," you level up as you win, but that doesn't mean you get to use better weapons or increase your strength.

Huh?

faceYou can only change your character's clothes as you level up, and the game is simply skill.

TeitoIt means that everyone in the field has the same conditions.

ShinIn smartphone games, you can get stronger by paying more, but in our game, spending money does not change the strength of the game at all.

Compete online with people from all over the world!

For those of you who didn't do it originally, what did you find interesting about it?

faceIt was simply like being led into a new world. I thought it was in a different dimension from the image we had of the game.

ChiIt's really evolved. The images and movements are just so realistic. And it's fun to be able to play with people you don't know online.

What used to be something that could only be done in the same place, can now be enjoyed in each person's home using the tool of the Internet. Do you also have conversations?

faceI wear headphones with a microphone and play while talking. It's like playing a game while talking on the phone with a friend. At first I wondered if I would be able to do it well. But I was able to play the game smoothly, without any conversation conflicts.

When you get together, do you decide together, "Let's do it at this time"?

ShinYes, we keep in touch with each other through a LINE group. As you can imagine, we can't get together every day, so we meet about once a week.

faceSome game software allows you to see who of your friends is playing online right now, so you can see who is playing before you start.

Is it not always Japanese who play?

ShinJapan's market share is actually very small. Most of the market is in Europe and the United States, where the market is much larger than in Japan.

So, do you communicate with overseas players online?

ShinSince you are automatically matched, you may even find a gringo participating. They may talk to me and say, "Hey! Boy!

faceI didn't like the idea of communicating with people I didn't know, so I turned off the conversation function when I do it alone.

ChiThere are all kinds of people. Some give me advice, others are very abusive.

ShinI've been called "small fry" and "fuck you, don't get carried away.

NuI had an American call me an "Asshole" once...

all of usLOL!

What was the situation?

NuI was playing "Rainbow Six Siege" and in a teamfight, all my teammates were defeated and I was left alone. There were four players on the other team, and I did my best to defeat two of them, but then I was killed....

ShinThe defeated player switches to the perspective of the surviving player. So for the remaining members, that was a lot of pressure; even Teito was outspoken when Aimi was the only one left (laughs).

Is that so?

TeitoNot knowing that Aimi was still there, I said, "Hurry up and go," or "What are you doing? Then Aimi said, "What? What? About me? And then Aimi said, "What?

all of usLOL!

faceThat was interesting!

TeitoReally smitten..., something like that (laughs).

ShinIt's fascinating that interesting things happen by chance like that (laughs).

Are there a lot of female gamers there?

AimiI think there are some, but I don't really want to see them as rivals. I don't want to be compared to them.

ChiSometimes I hear a woman talking. And sometimes the username is a woman's name.

ShinAimi is known to be a girl, so other users are messing with her (laughs).

AimiAnd yes, you can get up close and personal with the characters online.

ChiYou are a digital molester. You should sue him (laughs).

I would be happy if more people would come into contact with the game in a light way.

Are the battle royale-type games that you play also recognized as e-sports (i.e., professional competition)?

ShinRainbow Six Siege" is a recent addition. There have already been a number of tournaments.

TeitoWhen we were in Brazil, it was like a live viewing, and everyone was excited like they were watching a soccer game. It was fun to watch.

Do you also aspire to be a professional?

ShinWe are interested in games, but we are a loose group of gamers (laughs). Rather than stoically facing the game, we give priority to the feeling of fun.

faceWe are still amateurs, so we are afraid of the stiff players....

ShinNo matter how much they are on the same terms when they are out in the field, those who are in the competition are really strong. I can't even get my hands on them. So I guess it's a long road to get there....

I know you guys at "DHC" also distribute videos.

ShinThere are many videos on Youtube now, and there are even Youtubers who specialize in video games. They are very advanced and deliver techniques and strategies, but we are not like that, we upload videos of people having fun together.

faceI would be happy if people would perceive it as having a radio feel, or that the talk and such is interesting.

ChiRather than wanting to be good at it, we want to enjoy it more. That's why the bar is low and everyone is welcome.

Do you get any response from people around you when you actually send out messages on the Huinamu blog, etc.?

faceThere were people who said they bought the game after seeing us playing it.

NuI got a DM the other day from someone I don't know on Instagram. He said that the "DHC" videos are not as bleak as other people's videos. I guess that tends to happen with games where people shoot guns at each other, but ours are happy and fun to watch.

ShinMy motto is to have as much fun as possible rather than to end up in a deadly situation.

Finally, what are your future goals for "DHC"?

faceThere are not many cool peripherals for games.... So I would like to be involved in the design of such items. I would like to be involved in the design of such items so that they are more accessible to the general public.

NuI recently realized that there are more gamers around me than I thought. I think people hide the fact that they are gamers, and I would like to change that through DHC's activities. I would be happy if more people could have a more casual contact with games.

ShinOh no, I really don't. Anyway, I want you to watch the DHC video. If you are interested after watching it, please come and play with us!
