Three reasons to choose the versatile John Smedley.

That's standard!

Three reasons to choose the versatile John Smedley.

The British brand "JOHN SMEDLEY" has reigned as a definite staple of the classics for more than two centuries. While maintaining a certain distance from so-called "trends," knitwear has always sat in the middle of fashion, favored by experts who have worn all kinds of clothes, and at the same time, it has served as a gateway to fashion. For some, they are part of a legitimate classical style, and for others, they are the axis of an identity. We ask the three designers, all of whom are skilled in different fields, what makes high-gauge knitwear unique and what makes it so appealing.

Ms. Nishiguchi's style of dressing is impressive for its authentic and classical style, but what are the key points of today's outfit?

The primary color for classic is navy. However, I personally am in the mood for black, so I decided to dress in black in a classic way. I also added a 90's feel by wearing a slightly loose jacket, used black denim, and side gore boots. . like I'm doing a subversion of the classic.

. You know the standard, and you know how to wear it. Even though the basics of the classics have remained the same, the way you wear high-gauge knitwear, for example, has changed a lot since the old days, hasn't it?

Yes, when I first started working in the classic style, it was common practice to follow the rules that said, "You have to wear it this way. Nowadays, however, even high-gauge knitwear can be worn with denim or rider's jackets. John Smedley knits can be worn like a T-shirt or to a party. They also make the wearer look a little more mature.

With the rules of dressing like this becoming vague in a good way, is there a certain type of high-gauge knit that one should have?

. it would be a turtleneck (worn by Mr. Nishino, who appears next). Suppose that people in the fashion industry, for example, eliminated knitwear types by a process of elimination. Then I think that what would eventually remain would definitely be the turtleneck. If you wear a turtleneck with a suit and black shoes, you can have a formal atmosphere. On the other hand, it can also be worn very casually, which is the mysterious thing about turtles. . It's very deep, isn't it? I think you could call it an absolute must-have, the axis of winter style.

What kind of brand is "John Smedley" to you, Mr. Nishiguchi?

Actually, the first "John Smedley" I ever bought was a special order from BEAMS. It was when I was in college, and I was beginning to develop an interest in so-called "classic" clothes. I had already decided on Brooks Brothers for shirts and Edward Green for shoes, but John Smedley was probably the only high-gauge knitwear I could find. If you were to ask 100 of our staff members today, the answer would probably be the same. I think that John Smedley is such an indispensable brand that people will continue to buy from it for a long time to come.

Perhaps it is because of your background at Brooks Brothers, but I feel that there is a classic core to your seemingly casual style. What do you usually keep in mind when choosing clothes?

These days, I try not to add too much. I think it's best to wear normal-looking things in normal sizing , rather than something bizarre. If I have a preference, it is to wear a basic turtle in the fall and winter. Whether I'm wearing a sweatshirt or a round-neck knit, I like to get a little turtleneck out of my neck. I have always liked turtlenecks because they were the only item from the Brooks era that I was allowed to wear in stores without a tie (including bow ties and scarves). In that sense, "John Smedley" is a truly versatile item that can be worn with jackets, sweatshirts, heavy knits, and anything else. The price alone is not cheap, but I am glad that it can be used in such a wide range of ways.

When did you first pick up the book yourself?

Of course, I wore them during my Brooks days, but at that time I couldn't afford to buy them myself, so I had my seniors give them to me. After finally being able to buy them myself, I tried various turtlenecks, including those of other brands. But the one that had the best balance was John Smedley's. The shape and color variations are the same, and the turtlenecks are very comfortable. The shape and color variations were the same, but above all, the quality was different. Since they are made of wool, they are basically worn with underwear, but the feel against the skin is extremely comfortable. Merino wool is also used as a base layer in outdoor activities, and I can feel that it is very good.

It is true that even fast fashion brands are now offering high quality merino wool knitwear. What are the specific differences between them and other brands?

After wearing a variety of turtles, I have noticed that John Smedley knitwear does not loosen around the neck. Most knitwear loosens a little after repeated wear and washing, but John Smedley's knitwear can be washed at home. However, John Smedley knitwear can be washed normally at home, and I have the feeling that it will "come back" when I wash it. It's a good purchase, and you want to wear it for a long time. John Smedley knitwear responds to that kind of feeling.

I think that this is similar to your own brand, "NEET," in that you do not follow trends without thought, but rather continue to create a fixed type of garment.

It's a bit presumptuous to put them side by side with "John's Medley," but I think they are both "white rice" in the sense of the word. It is always indispensable, and it is interesting to see how the side dish, whether furikake or umeboshi (pickled plums), can completely change the way it is enhanced by the other side dish. Trends change with the times, so there are times when I think, "I want an XL this season," and other times when I think, "I want a medium and a snug fit. But in any case, I think I would choose "John Smedley" in the end.

When did you start wearing "John Smedley"?

For example, I used to wear classic jackets from classic brands such as "BABWAR" and "BARACHTA". I have also liked Ralph Lauren since I was a kid. So I naturally gravitated toward John Smedley, which had the image of being a top quality knitwear brand.

Do you remember your first one?

I bought my first one because it was sold at the Bridge, a store where about 80% of the items were from Deluxe, and it was interesting to see John Smedley among them. Nowadays, it is commonplace to mix and match brands, but at the time, it was really cool.

I see a similarity between your style and that of Mr. Arai, who mixes different tastes, such as street and classic, with a sense of freedom. I heard that you also wear "John Smedley" when you skate.

Yes, I do. Of course I fall and scrape, but I don't mind at all what I do. Of course, the texture and appearance are fine, but it is precisely at times like these that I feel the high quality of the product.

Of all the things to choose a cardigan, is it the influence of the great skaters?

Really, Dylan Reeder and Ethan Farrar are a great achievement. I think they broke the skating style and changed the times. Gonz skating in Hermes was super cool. I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think it's interesting at all when skaters dress like skaters. They all wear the same big T-shirts and work pants. I don't like it when people turn to the right and say, "That's fine. I think, "Why don't they just dress the way they like to skate?

He said that he genuinely enjoys what he thinks is cool and does not force it to be part of the scene.

So I always keep the same basic style. Black pants, a white T , and a cardigan. Shoes are either loafers from "G.H. Bass" or boots from "Saint Laurent. Sometimes I wear a band T of a band I like. I think many people who like John Smedley are like that. I think that kind of thing is the coolest, whether it's the way they dress or the way they live.
