monessay ─ learning from an old man.

monessay - old people's lesson

This is "monessay," a series of essays by Toshiyuki Tsai, publisher of Huinum and editor-in-chief of Huinum Unplugged. It is an essay through objects, so it is called "monessay." There is no twist, but it is not a poop, either. The column that had been serialized in a certain magazine for quite a long time has been discontinued, and a new column has been started in Huinamu. This time, we'll be looking at surf skates from CARVER SKATEBOARDS.

Vol.16 Old people's lessons

from ...I am relatively athletic, to say the least. When I was in elementary school, I was the fastest person in my class. Since he was born right in front of a baseball field, he had been playing triangular base with his older brothers in the neighborhood since he was a child. It is said that the second or third son will make a great athlete. The desire to compete with one's older brothers enhances one's athletic ability. In that sense, I was trained by these neighborhood older brothers.

salad bowlI've been playing soccer since first grade. I am a single-minded person who hates practice, but loves the game. I always wished we could play mini games at the end of practice all the time. I still kick a ball now and then, but I don't have the sparkle I had back then.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)I can play tennis, golf, and other ball games that I occasionally play without dragging my opponents down. Well, there is nothing I am not good at in ball games in general.

sea cucumber (Holothuroidea spp.)I also started keying and snowboarding in the last few years at the invitation of Salomon Sports. Although I struggled at first, I think I have already reached an intermediate level. I need some training to improve further, but as an enjoyable player, I think I'm doing okay.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)I think surfing is the most difficult sport I have ever experienced.

just (e.g. "just wait here")The hardest part is getting up on the board. It is not just a matter of standing up in time for the wave, but it is also a matter of having a good eye for picking out a breaking wave. First of all, you need to have an eye for waves that will break, then you need to be able to distinguish the point where the wave will break, then you need to have the paddle skills to move freely to that point, and then you need to have the paddle ability to match the speed of the wave.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)Standing up from this position is also difficult. It is even more difficult if you are stiff.

being burnt outWhen he stood up, he controlled his board, but he soon lost his balance on the unstable wave.

sea cucumber (Holothuroidea spp.)In the case of noobo, the slope is always there, so you can practice over and over again, but in the case of waves, the shape is not always constant, you have to wait for the wave to come or not come, and even then, it is not easy to practice because the better riders are always riding ahead of you.

that (someone or something distant from both speaker and listener, or situation unfamiliar to both speaker and listener)So, I'm still a beginner in surfing forever. When will I get good at it?

andSo I asked a lot of people and they told me that I should practice surfing on a regular basis. The most affordable is surf skates. They are longer than skateboards and can move more like surfing turns.

buh- (indicating an indirect cause, e.g. love, jealousy, anger)In Japan, the American-born "Carver Skateboards" are the best, and we are currently looking for a variety of skateboards.

indicates certainty, emphasis, etc.I don't want people to see an old man practicing skateboarding with a helmet and protector around. I wonder where I should practice skateboarding secretly.

lateningIf you see someone wobbling around Daikanyama at night, fully protected, please do not talk to them.
