When did you open HAIR CALIFORNIA?

I originally had a store with the same name in Hiratsuka, then opened a store in Hawaii, but I came back to Japan two years ago and opened this store.

What do you value in your work?

I value one-on-one contact. I do not hire assistants, and I want to treat my clients entirely by myself. I think it is important to do it all by myself, without the help of others, in order for them to like the style 120%.

I see.

I also aim to create a style that is not best on the day it is cut, but one that will grow on you as you get used to it. I would be happy to hear from clients that they did a better job styling their hair by themselves than I did.

What do you look for in a watch?

I like surfing and my job requires me to use water a lot, so I want a waterproof watch. I usually use a Briston watch, and I really like it.

Other than the waterproof feature, what else attracts you to this product?

The tortoiseshell parts surrounding the face are cool. The elegance of a luxury watch and the casualness of an everyday watch coexist well, don't they?

What made you decide to become a photographer?

I have been taking photographs since high school, but when I was young, I had no intention of becoming a professional photographer. I did not become a commercial photographer, but continued to create my own work while working part-time. However, I wanted to learn lighting techniques because I didn't have them, and my mentor worked in advertising while creating works, so I wanted to become a photographer who could do both.

That is how you came to study under your master, Shin Suzuki.

When I looked at magazines, the photos I thought were good were often taken by my mentor.

What do you value in your work as a professional photographer?

In addition to taking good photos, I am conscious of trying to make the mood of the shooting site memorable. I think that kind of atmosphere leads to taking attractive photos. I feel that liking your camera and shooting with it will reflect your feelings and help you take good photos.

Do you wear a watch while working?

I used to wear it a lot when I was an assistant. I couldn't take out my phone every time I was working. To be honest, I don't wear it much these days, but if I find a nice watch, I would like to wear it.

How did you feel when you tried on "Bryston"?

First of all, I like the analog aspect. I think that only analog watches allow you to physically feel the passage of time and the time axis of the day by looking at the hands. Also, I have a thin wrist, but the size of the watch still feels comfortable to me. I was also pleased that the belt is interchangeable, so I can match it with my coordinates.

stylist

Yuki Matsuda three

When did you decide to become a stylist?

That was when I was a sophomore in high school. I started reading "Asayan" and "Boon," which I was buying at the time, and I was instantly awakened to fashion (laughs). (Laughs.) The magazine also carried advertisements for fashion colleges, and when I saw the words "Stylist Department," I wondered what kind of work they did. So I did my own research.

So that's how you became interested in being a stylist.

I was attracted to the fact that I was exposed to a variety of clothing. So I went to a technical school, followed my mentor, and started my own business at the age of 21. This year marks 20 years since I became a stylist.

What is the secret to being at the forefront for 20 years?

I don't know if it is a secret or not, but I value things like rules as a person. I don't know if it is a secret or not, but I try to have a sense of rules as a human being, such as greeting people properly and being on time. In that sense, a watch may be a necessity for me.

I see.

I also wear it to keep up my appearance. I think it is an important item for expressing one's personal style. I think men in particular tend to pay attention to what kind of watches are worn by other men (laughs).

How do you see Briston watches in your eyes?

I like military designs, and this one has a very military taste. And yet it is elegant and easy to wear even for adults. I also like the fact that you can change the belt and enjoy various combinations. I also like the perfect size. I think watches with large faces were popular at one time, but they would get in the way of my work. But with this watch, I don't feel oppressed, and I like the way it fits comfortably in my hand.

I understand that you sell plants and create spaces at "Luthulus." When did you start your activities?

This year marks our 10th anniversary. I originally worked at a plant shop inside an interior design store, and after learning the know-how there, I started my own business.

What attracts you to the plant?

It is an organic force, isn't it? For example, when a new store is built, after arranging the fixtures and products, adding plants to the space gives it the feeling of being brought to life. That moment is very enjoyable and makes me happy.

What do you value in your work?

In talking with the client, we try to place plants that the client can grow well. Plants have their own fads, but I think it is our role to help people fall in love with plants without getting caught up in the fads. Even a really ordinary plant can look different just by changing its pot. We are conscious of proposing a good combination of plants and pots, just like people dress up in clothes.

While working, do you ever look at your watch or pay attention to the time?

I have been so busy for the past 10 years that I had forgotten the habit of wearing a watch. But when I put on my Briston watch this time, I thought it would be nice to wear it on my wrist for the first time in a while. It's not unusual for me to get dirt or water on my arm because of my job, but this watch is waterproof, so I don't have to worry about it. It is also nice that the belt can be replaced even if it gets dirty. I also like the fact that I can go out to dinner in the evening because it has a nice, adult-like design.

norbit Designer

Hiroshi Nozawa three

What is the concept behind "norbit"?

We do not stand as a fashion brand, but rather are anti-fashion. We make practical clothes that feature functions for holidays and outdoor activities, rather than something that looks cool to be seen by others. There are many long-established brands overseas, but they were used for various purposes, such as work or hunting, rather than for fashion. I would like Norbit to be a brand that lasts for 100 or 200 years in the world of practical use in the same way.

What is your design focus?

I want to do what is possible only in this day and age. The jacket I am wearing today may look classic at first glance, but the outer fabric is a water-repellent tweed with a waterproof and breathable film on the inside, and the lining is a stretchy tricot fabric. The elbow patches are made of cordura nylon, laser-cut and sewn together so that the edges look clean. It is a good combination of the best parts of old-fashioned clothing and modern technology.

Do you ever think about making watches with "Norbit"?

I sometimes thought about it, but I am not very good with machines... (laughs). (Laughs.) But when I saw a Briston watch with a dial surrounded by celluloid, I thought it was an interesting idea. I often look at things from that perspective.

I understand that you actually wear items from "Briston," but what do you think of the designs?

I like the design that doesn't seem to be there. I get bored easily with completely new designs, but this one is an austere mix of past and contemporary design. It's not flashy, and it feels right at home. It's very well-balanced.
