We ask Aimyon, who continues to make great strides, about her past and present.
A lyric video for a song that she posted on Youtube became a viral sensation and led to Aimyon's appearance in the year-end Kohaku (red and white) TV show just a few years after her indie debut. Her latest single "Tonari Konna Mata," released in November, was written for the theme song of the popular TV drama "Beasts Can't Be Beware of Us," which is currently airing on Nippon Television Network Corporation. We asked her about her current feelings and past activities, as the environment surrounding her confidence is changing at a dizzying pace.
It was really only in the last couple of years that I decided to make music a serious activity.
Your profile says that you have been songwriting since about junior high school, but when did you start to get serious about music?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)To be honest, when I made my indie debut, I thought it would be over in an instant. 2 years ago, on November 30, around the time of my major label debut, I started to wonder if I could really make it as an artist. I started to wonder if I could really make it as an artist when I made my major label debut on November 30, two years ago. . Until then, it was vague, and I still wonder how long this will last. I still wonder how long I can continue like this (laughs). (laughs) So, I guess you would say that it was around the time of your major debut that you started working on it in earnest.
When you were in your hometown, were you also active in live music?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I didn't do it at all until I was approached. I am a person who cannot act on my own (laughs). I don't know how to go to live music venues, and I don't know how to upload videos to Youtube. My friends did everything for me. I was the kind of person who couldn't do anything by myself (laughs).
When you think about it, we are running up a tremendous pace!
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I was just lucky, or surprised . I didn't expect this to happen.
What made you fall in love with music in the first place?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman). I guess I just started liking music when I realized I liked it. I don't really remember where the boundary was. However, as I mentioned earlier, it was only in the last couple of years that I really started to think about music as an activity. However, I started writing songs when I was 15 years old. My father was a sound engineer, and he knew a lot about music, so we had all kinds of instruments at home. He was especially good at playing the acoustic guitar, which I thought was cool, so I started learning by watching and imitating him. I wanted to touch an acoustic guitar! I wanted to touch an acoustic guitar!
. Since you were a child, you were in an environment where you had all kinds of music playing in your home.
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Yes, that's right. We were not a musical family, but both my father and mother were music lovers, so I always had the image that something was always playing. My mother could play the shamisen, but my father could play any instrument.
Do you have a favorite artist or song from your childhood that made a lasting impression on you?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I was in the fourth grade of elementary school when I started listening to music on my own, and at that time I was listening to Ai Otsuka and ORANGE RANGE. The first CD I bought by myself was ORANGE RANGE. Matsuken Samba" was also very popular at that time, so I was listening to it a lot. In terms of Spitz, it was around the time "Haru no Uta" was released. I was also listening to the music that was released around that time and was often heard.
When did you actively pick up a variety of music away from the so-called "hit charts"?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman). I think there were more music programs then than there are now. There were various special features in those music programs. For example, a ranking of the most popular songs of the 90s back then! I used to rely on those rankings. I relied on those rankings. At any rate, I would watch and listen to old, nostalgic songs on TV and take notes.
I see, so you weren't the type to go to CD stores and dig around like a maniac.
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Yes, I did. I was a student, so I didn't have any money (laughs). . So I often listened to the music my father was listening to. His room was like a TSUTAYA. He had a lot of CDs.
You have Shogo Hamada's name in your profile as an artist who has influenced you, right?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman) This is exactly the kind of music I found in my father's room. Hama Show, Takuro Yoshida, and the like . The first Spitz CD also came from my father's room. There was an album called "Sora no Hopping" ("How to Fly in the Sky"), wasn't there?
Do you talk about music with your father often?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman). which I usually don't do at all. . It's just that every once in a while, my father will suddenly come up to me and talk to me. When I was just starting out, he would give me advice that I didn't really understand, like, "Well, you'll find a microphone that suits you eventually" (laughs). (Laughs) . Hearing that, I thought to myself, "That's what a PA is all about. . I have never seen my father actually at work.
Still?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman). still (laughs). (Laughs.) Well, I guess a father can't take his daughter to work, can he? But I started playing guitar when I was about 14 or 15 years old, and for my birthday, he started giving me things related to music: CDs, a harmonica, a guitar stand, and so on. I started getting them every year.
From that time on, was music the thing that interested you the most?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I was interested in many other things, but music was the one I was most interested in.
For what else?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman). I also liked painting, so I wanted to pursue a career in the arts. Also, I had always loved taking pictures with a camera since I was about 16 years old, and ... I was too curious and wanted to try many different things. . But when I was 18 years old, I started to think that music was the best fit for me in terms of timing, and I was approached to pursue a career in music.
The first time I consciously listened to Aimyon's music was when Neetz of KANDYTOWN remixed "I want to tell you about my love... Remix EP".
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I think I'm biased. It's weird, maybe the way I listen to music . There are a lot of things that I don't know, like, "I know that part, so why don't I know that part? There are a lot of things that I don't know, and there are a few things that are missing. He listens to what he genuinely likes, so maybe he listens to a variety of genres.
You don't seem to be picky. . like, "I don't listen to this genre.
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Not at all. I like rap music very much. I also try to listen to what others recommend, and I check out new albums by various artists.
I'm glad I was allowed to write this song when I was old enough to understand the drama.
I know that the environment surrounding you has changed a lot over the past few years, Aimyon, but have there been any internal changes?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Compared to when I was 18 or 19 years old and an indie artist at the time, I think I have become more aware of myself as an artist. From the very basics. I think I have learned to take care of my physical condition and not to get injured (laughs). . I was told once that I am not the only one with a body, and I thought, "Sure, I can do that. If I don't make something, you can't do anything, and if I don't move, you can't do anything, so it's true that it's not just my body. I don't think of it as something I have to take on, but if I get hurt, it would be a problem for everyone. I have started to be aware that I should take care of what I can take care of myself. It's a little late to be aware of that, but it's a good thing (laughs).
Has your songwriting process changed compared to the past?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman) I probably change some part of it every year, but I don't really notice it myself. Basically, I make music at home with an acoustic guitar, writing lyrics at the same time. The rest of the time, I'm free to do whatever I want.
When you say "at the same time", do you mean at the same time after deciding on a theme? Or do you really create the melody and lyrics at the same time?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Really at the same time. I don't even have a theme in mind. I just pick up the guitar and start strumming away. Sometimes I just decide on the title of the song, not the theme, and create a story from there. I think I am finding various ways of doing things as I continue my activities.
Are you a fast songwriter?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman). maybe. Actually, I don't know because I haven't compared it with other artists, but I think it's faster.
This single song, "Tonari Kono Mamata" was written for the drama, was this the first time you wrote a new song for it?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I have had a song from my indie days used for the opening of a TV drama, but this was the first time I wrote for a TV drama. I have written for movies several times. I received a script and wrote a song based on it.
Is such a way of making a product different from what you are used to?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman). It's totally different. It is almost like putting my own work on top of a work that already exists, so it is difficult to find the right balance between my own style and that of the drama. But what I always appreciate is that the directors of the dramas and films I have worked on have always told me that I can create freely. As someone who usually creates freely, I find it very easy to do so. Of course, there are certain keywords that I want to be included, but I am even happier when I am given such themes. So, I hope that we can continue to provide such music and write new songs in the future.
What is the drama, "The Beast That Can't Be Ours," of which "Tonari Kono Mamoru" is the theme song?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I think the content is very mature. It's an adult romance. I am glad that I was allowed to write this song at an age when I could understand the content of the drama. Gakki's cuteness is also on full display in the song, so I hope people will pay attention to that as well (laughs).
And this time, there is a 12-page booklet photographed by Shiori Ikeno, isn't there? How was the photo shoot?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)It was a good shoot. We rented out an amusement park called Shibukawa Skyland Park in Gunma at night and had a blast. It was so much fun that I was surprised at how excited grown-ups get when they go to an amusement park for the first time in a long time (laughs). It was really fun. I rode a roller coaster for the first time in years, and all I got were ugly pictures of myself (laughs). I took so many ugly pictures (laughs)! I can't marry her! But I got a lot of good pictures, so I decided to make a booklet out of them, and I'm glad I was able to do it. There are still so many good photos that I didn't get a chance to put in the booklet, and it's such a waste.
It's frustrating! I can't continue to do this unless I have people around me who make me feel like I'm a good person.
Your collaboration with "Reebok Classic" and the cover of "Eyescream" magazine have attracted attention from fashion and cultural fields other than music, and you have also attracted attention from the so-called mass media, such as for writing the theme song for a TV drama series. How do you perceive this situation?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)It's interesting. I wonder why (laughs). . I was also surprised when I did the cover of Eyescream. I had never been on the cover of a magazine before, and it was right around the time of the release of my album. When I did a one-man show at WWW or something, I heard that there was a stylist who wanted to shoot with Aimyon, and it turned out to be Mr. Hattori (editor's note: Mr. Masataka Hattori is a well-known stylist at HOUYHNHNM's as well). I had never met him before, but he told me that he wanted to do it for the cover. It seemed unrealistic to us, so we said, "Oh, really? I was like, "What? But I think the cover of "Eyescream" had a big impact. After that, I think I was invited to appear in other fashion magazines as well. Personally, I like wearing clothes, so I always think it is fun to be featured in fashion magazines.
What kind of fashion do you like in your daily life?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)When I was a teenager, I used to dress in a lot of messy clothes, but nowadays, if I have a lot of luggage or I have to walk today, I wear sneakers. I carry a guitar on my back, so I wear comfortable clothes all the time.
What are some of your favorite brands?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I know Mr. Fujita, the designer of "Salvum," and his clothes are amazingly cool. . But basically, I am not that particular about the brand.
You mean you like to wear different kinds of clothes?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Is it? I guess it means that I wear what I think is cute (laughs).
I know you are really busy these days, but what are your hobbies?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I'm multi-talented.
You mentioned that you are curious.
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Yes . Recently, I like plants . I often buy plants at flower shops. I also like painting, and I take pictures with my camera whenever I have free time, and many other things. When I don't have much time, I feel like shopping, so when I have a day off, I wander around the city. I enjoy shopping. But I am extreme. When I sleep, I sleep a lot.
Are there any artists or things that you are interested in right now?
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)I like to look for the best actors and I like to look for the best actors! I like to look for the "this guy is going to make it" (laughs). (Laughs). It's like I'm suddenly looking at them from the perspective of a producer. There are a few people like that. I want to support them as an actor. There is a guy named Hiroto Oshita, whom I met when neither he nor I had started anything yet, and he recently joined a big office called "Office Saku. He recently joined a big firm called "Office Saku." He is not that much older than I am, and he is talking from a higher position, but I like to look for artists whom I want to support. I like people who make me frustrated. People who make me jealous.
Ah, I'm beat! Like.
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Ah, I'm beat! What a talent! . (laughs). (Like, "Oh, my God! What talent!") . I think it is important to have people like that around you, whether you know them or not. There are many seniors around me now who make me feel frustrated and who treat me well, and without them, I probably wouldn't be able to continue.
Stimulation from such places is the source of my creative activities.
misspelling of a name (often of a woman)Yes, it's a crazy springy thing.
