Indie rock created by Ruby Sparks, brought to you by UK rock culture .

The "crocodile polo shirt" is loved around the world. René Lacoste, founder of LACOSTE, was a professional tennis player and inventor. One of the symbols of his inventiveness is the steel racket. It is also the prototype for the racquets used today, and it shows the overwhelming creativity and insatiable frontier spirit of René Lacoste. Ruby Sparks is a next generation rock band formed in 2016 by five then college students. The indie rock music they produce has an individuality that is not influenced by trends.

We have our own image of Britpop.

I think Ruby Sparks has a great sense of fashion unity.

NatsukiEach member has a different facial features, so we choose clothes that fit our own atmosphere. We try to create some kind of commonality by using monochrome colors. For today's shoot, we also wore check pants. Also, Ruby Sparks often performs as an opening act for foreign bands, so I try to match the main band and their image. For example, this time we decided to go for a post-punk look.

Tamio. The one thing that is absolutely non-negotiable among them is skinnies. There is no other way but skinny.

ErikaCertainly! (Laughter).

NatsukiIn my case, I wear boot-cut clothes. I don't wear oversized clothes. Basically, I wear tight silhouettes.

Natsuki (Ba, Vo)
Polo shirt made of stretchy pique material. The brand logo on the chest is decorated in the same color as the body, making it suitable for more chic outfits. It has an appealing mature atmosphere that goes well with jackets. ¥15,000+TAX

Do you have something to back up that sense of fashion?

NatsukiThe music we are influenced by is UK music from the 80s and 90s, but the fashion of the artists of that time is tight. Jesus & Mary Chain, The Cure, and so on. So naturally, we started to prefer slim clothes.

You also wore a polo shirt in a tight fit in today's shoot.

NatsukiThat's right. The pants are our own, but we chose them while considering the image of "Lacoste" in our own way. Polo shirts have an image of Britpop for me, and I wanted them to look like that. I was talking with the members earlier during the shoot, and today's style is like the early Blur style.

Erika (Vo)
The most distinctive feature of this polo shirt is the unusual collar. The design is somewhat dressy while maintaining a casual look. The French sleeve design has a beautiful silhouette. ¥17,000+TAX
New sneakers with tricolor lines and alligator accents. This pair, based on court shoes, is easy to match with any style. Made of soft nappa leather, they are comfortable to wear. ¥13,000+TAX

By the way, what kind of a presence does Lacoste have?

NatsukiI have a nostalgic impression. When I was in junior high school, I used to wear a white polo shirt from Lacoste to school. At the school I attended, any brand was acceptable as long as the top of the uniform was a white shirt or polo shirt.

ErikaI have memories of my grandfather always wearing Lacoste. My parents' house was next to a golf course, and he used to go out wearing it. He was a man who cared about fashion. That's why I was reminded of my grandfather during the shoot today.

all of us(Laughter)

ErikaSo I have an image of elegant clothes that gentlemen usually wear.

Rooted in the UK music of the 80's and 90's.

I see. You mentioned the name of a UK band about fashion earlier, but I think Ruby Sparks' music is often described by the public as shoegaze. Once again, what do you think about your musical style?

NatsukiOur first album "Luby Sparks", released in January 2018, was created with the idea of indie rock that aims for the guitar pop of the late 80's and early 90's in the UK, such as the early Primal Scream and The Smiths, but also includes elements of alternative rock, shoegaze, and dream pop from the 2010's onward. The EP "(I'm) Lost in Sadness", which was produced after Erika joined the band and released in November, is aimed at a slightly different direction. It is a slightly different direction. Compared to the first EP, it has a darker and more aesthetic feel. The current mode...I guess you could call it dream pop. But in a slightly different way from the first album.

Was Erika a big part of the change in your musical style with the EP "(I'm) Lost in Sadness"?

NatsukiYes, it is. It is based on her visuals and personality. Although the other four members remain the same, the appearance of the band has changed dramatically with the addition of Erika. We are trying to expand our musicality to fit in with the new members, while of course keeping the core of the band in mind.

Shin (Dr)
This hooded polo shirt can be worn casually on its own or layered. Made in a slightly loose silhouette for a relaxed fit. ¥17,000+TAX

Since we are here, please tell us one band or artist each of you respect.

ShinHmmm, I can't narrow it down....

NatsukiShin is one of our members who came through a non-UK Rock area. Maybe the Beatles or something?

ShinWell, I was certainly influenced. At first I didn't understand the quality of the music, but as I listened to it, I became addicted to it, especially the drums. I can't really explain what's so interesting about it, but it's good. Maybe it is because Ringo (Starr) is left-handed.

Tamio.Tam spinning and other interesting things.

NatsukiShin's drumming is completely different from that of so-called shoegaze, and I think the natural inclusion of such elements creates a unique character. The band's sound itself is very 90's UK-esque, but if you pick up the drums alone, you will find that the rhythms are rather simple and classic.

Tamio (Gt)
The prototype of the polo shirt, the classic "L.12.12" was created in 1933. The single yarn knitted deer has a unique luster and durability, and the identity of the brand has been incorporated. ¥13,000+TAX

Tamio.I think James Blake is a genius. The song "If The Car Beside You Moves Ahead" is avant-garde, and it's like a mix of two halves of the same song. I admire him for being able to express in music the kind of internal experience he usually hears.

SunaoIn my case, I am talking about black music, especially funk and disco. Originally, myself, Natsuki, and Shin were in a club in college where we were only allowed to play black music. There is a guitarist named Nile Rodgers, whose cutting is incredible, and I especially like him. I like him a lot. I think that element is used in the band.

Sunao (Gt)
An authentic polo shirt arranged with a border. The simple design has a strong presence and universal appeal. One line on the sleeve adds an accent. ¥13,000+TAX
At first glance, these are classical court shoes, but they are very light due to the use of EVA material in the outsole. The tricolor alligator on the side panel gives them a distinctive presence. This pair also features a soft fit. ¥12,000+TAX

NatsukiThe band that has influenced me the most is Jesus & Mary Chain. Not only the sound, but also the fashion and artwork. The band's image is very unified, using only black, red, white, etc. in their costumes. I saw them perform live once before, and I was very impressed by their worldview, not only in sound, but also in visuals and lighting.

ErikaI like soundtracks more than any particular genre or artist. My family also likes movies, and the soundtrack to "The Rocky Horror Show" was playing when I was little. I especially like the soundtrack of "Crow: The Legend of Flight. That includes Jesus and the Merry Chain, which Natsuki mentioned earlier, as well as The Cure and Nine Inch Nails, but I love everything on here, regardless of genre.

I want Ruby Sparks to be the kicker to get to know the music.

Please tell us about the current situation of the band: In January, you held your first self-organized live concert "Thursday I don't care about you" at Shibuya WWW.

NatsukiFirst of all, I was most surprised by the large number of people who came to the show. We invited a Korean band, Say Sue Me, and I felt we had a great response.

NatsukiSay Sue Me has a 90's US alternative sound, and they played a two man show with Ruby Sparks. The fact that so many people came to the show, even on a weekday in the middle of Shibuya, shows that there is still a need for this kind of music in Tokyo.

ErikaThere were many young and fashionable people, and I was happy to realize that Ruby Sparks' music is getting through to that generation.

NatsukiLooking back on the past, I see that adults from the generation that listened to shoegaze and alternative music at the time came to see our shows. Of course, that makes us very happy, but on the other hand, there are many young people and modern kids who only listen to Japanese bands, and they commented that our live show was "like watching a movie". I want to convey to this generation that there are many different expressions of indie rock, and that Ruby Sparks' roots are in a variety of cool music and cultures from all over the world. I hope that we can be a chance for them to broaden their musical horizons.
