The Marshmallow Gauze® fabric pajamas, redesigned by Urban Research in collaboration with UCHINO, offer a relaxing and comfortable time not only in bed but also as loungewear for daily life. Moreover, as you can see, they are so good-looking that you can go for a walk around the neighborhood in them without a care in the world. We caught up with Ryo Koizumi, an up-and-coming calligraphy artist who usually works at home and is in search of a better night's sleep, and followed her through a day spent with the Marshmallow Gauze® collection, which supports her artist lifestyle in a more comfortable way.

A pleasant awakening in the morning is the source of creativity.
The fresh morning sunlight streaming in through the window tells Mr. Koizumi, who was dreaming just a moment ago, that it is time to start his day. No matter how late he works, getting up at a certain time in the morning is always his routine.
I used to help out in the family landscaping business until a little while ago, so getting up early is ingrained in me. Craftsmen wake up very early in the morning. So even now, even if I work until about 3 a.m., I wake up at 6:30 to 7 a.m. (laughs).
Marshmallow Gauze® pajamas are highly rated for three reasons: they provide moderate heat retention to help prevent the coldness of sleep, they are light and comfortable to wear, and they do not stick to the skin even when perspiring during sleep. Its soft touch is truly stress-free and supports comfortable sleep.
During the production period, when work is packed, I sometimes get only three hours of sleep a day, so it is ideal to sleep well and deeply in a short period of time. I find that when I wear it, it feels very soft and natural against my skin, and it is also very comfortable to sleep in.
Crawling out of bed and rubbing my sleepy eyes, I headed for the kitchen. Even though it is spring, it is natural to feel chilly in the morning when you wake up from sleep and before your body temperature rises. First, I boil water and brew a cup of coffee.
The gauze material is smooth to the touch. It also has excellent breathability, so I feel ready to get out of bed and get moving even right after waking up. As for the design, I like the open collar and piping, which is very pajama-like. I can tell from the comfort of the pajamas that they pay attention to even the smallest details.
Relaxing in the morning with a cup of coffee and a book in preparation for the work ahead. This time spent relaxing is more important than anything else, Koizumi says.
I can do just the work of drawing at night, but the moment of inspiration for a design usually comes in the morning. The first hour or two after I wake up is the most creative time of the day, when my mind is clear. That is why it is very important for me to wake up in a fresh state of mind.
Rough and comfortable, so you can relax and concentrate on your work.
Now that the city has completely calmed down from its morning bustle, it is time to start working. I change from my pajamas into my work clothes and go to my work space in the corner of the living room. The top and bottom are made of the same soft marshmallow gauze® material as my pajamas, so even the drawing of lines, an important element of calligraphy, goes smoothly.
This set-up is perfect for a home worker like me," he said. "I can have a guest over on a moment's notice, and because it's not designed to look like loungewear, I can go out in the neighborhood without changing a thing.
Koizumi, who made a splash in 2018 with his work on the title character for the NHK historical drama "Saigodon," began his career as a calligraphy artist/graphic designer in earnest in April of this year.
This year marks the sixth spring since I started calligraphy. I liked drawing when I was a child, but that didn't mean I was learning calligraphy or studying at an art college. The way he drew the letters so smoothly on the paper, it was like he was a magician, and I was instantly drawn in.
I first encountered calligraphy by chance. He fell in love with this art form, which has been handed down since ancient times as a way to make letters look beautiful, and although he had the tools and started to imitate what he saw, it was only as a hobby.
However, when I uploaded the finished works on Instagram, the response was surprisingly positive. From there, I gradually began to receive individual orders for wedding welcome boards and other items, and before I knew it, I was receiving requests for work from companies as well.
Recently, with an eye on overseas markets, he says, "I have been experimenting with Japanese elements and designing collage-like pieces by deconstructing letters.
I hope to create my own new style of calligraphy and introduce it to the world, so that people will be more interested in it and its coolness will spread. I hope that by creating a new style of calligraphy myself and introducing it to the world, I will be able to attract more interest in calligraphy and spread the coolness of the art.
It's easy and casual, even when you want to take a short walk to refresh yourself.
It is easy to lose track of time when you are so absorbed in your work, but sometimes it is necessary to take a moderate break. After changing shirts, I chose the same pair of shorts in a different color from "Urban Research" and "Uchino" as before. Because of their rough, comfortable fit and simple design, they can be used as one-mile wear when you want to take a quick walk around the neighborhood to freshen up. They are also useful as one-mile wear when you just want to take a walk around the neighborhood to freshen up. They also have the versatility to be coordinated with other regular outfits.
The most important point is not only the universal design but also the functionality that is just right for daily use. Unlike ordinary T-shirts, the tops do not stretch around the neck, and the loose silhouette of the shorts is comfortable to wear. The material is extremely soft and comfortable to wear. I like them because they allow me to spend time in a relaxed and carefree manner both at home and outside.
A few minutes' stroll later, we arrived at "Book and Sons," a bookstore with calligraphy reference materials. We arrived at "Books and Sons," a bookstore stocked with reference materials on calligraphy. Once inside the store, your feet go straight for the shelves with typography-related books. Ah, you have already picked up the first book.
The shop is interesting because it mainly carries books on typography and other graphic design topics. In my hometown, there are no bookstores that carry such specialized books, so when I stop by, I tend to linger for a while.
The quiet interior of the store seems as if time has stopped. Even the rubbing of your clothes can feel a little uncomfortable, but you don't have to worry about that with shorts made of soft gauze fabric. And because they are lightweight, you won't get tired even if you are standing for a long time looking for books. While I'm at it, I think I found a book I'm interested in.
When I think, "How can I express something that is fixed in the form of letters in my own way? When I think, "How can I express something that has been defined as letters in my own way? So I look at books on calligraphy and typography, but I also try to get inspiration from other fields, such as photography and art books.
Then, take another step into the back of the store, and you will find a gallery space attached to the store. The exhibited works are also different in genre from calligraphy, but the core of design remains the same. Through such input and output, Koizumi's unique worldview is formed.
There are abstract works, but it is relatively easy to tell whether calligraphy is good or bad based on how clean the lines are and whether the shapes are well balanced. On the other hand, I always try to hone my own senses by coming into contact with art works such as photographs and paintings, which require the viewer's subjectivity and sensitivity.
I bought a cup of hot coffee at the coffee stand outside the store and sat down on a bench for a short break. The relaxing time provided by the Marshmallow Gauze® collection by Urban Research and Uchino, combined with the stimulation provided by her eyes, nose, and ears, gave Koizumi another hint for her creative work. Now, let's see how we can give shape to this idea when we wake up tomorrow morning. ......
The Marshmallow Gauze® Collection is designed to accompany you in your daily life.
Urban Research, which upholds the concept of "design your lifestyle," collaborated with Uchino in Nihonbashi, Tokyo, to create a redesigned loungewear collection to encourage people to cherish sleep as a chance to reset their daily fatigue. collection. The gentle touch of the marshmallow gauze® used in the fabric will make your daily life more comfortable.
The silhouette is renewed so that it can be worn by unisex people by giving it a loose feel throughout. The piping gives these pajamas the appearance of royal pajamas. Three colors are available in calm colors proposed by "Urban Research".
This T-shirt top has a wide neckline for a relaxed fit. The body hem has side slits for easy access to the bottoms' pockets. The silhouette naturally falls at the shoulders, so it is soft and comfortable against the skin when worn.
Like the tops, these shorts are designed in a relaxed silhouette to take advantage of the softness of the material. Pockets on both sides are sufficient for storing a smartphone, wallet, etc. Men's shorts are available in two sizes, M and L, and the fitting can be adjusted with a cord at the waist.
Light, soft, and gently wraps the body in comfort. Marshmallow Gauze®.
By combining fine, soft, untwisted yarns with strong yarns and weaving them into a triple weave, we have achieved an amazing lightness and softness that lives up to its marshmallow name. Furthermore, it is an innovative gauze material that is comfortable to the touch because of its well-balanced water absorbency, breathability, and heat retention properties.
