Who is Park Deli, a unique store from Brooklyn?

Freaks Store is a select store that offers a sense of free and airy American culture such as surfing, skating, and music. Among the items sold in the store and online are items created in collaboration with Battenwear and Park Deli, both from New York City. The relaxed silhouettes and graphics are perfect for the coming hot season. The "Park Deli" store in particular seems to be an unusual type of business, so we asked the store owner, Michael, about it.

A delicatessen that does not serve food.

Park Deli, a delicatessen located on Park Street in Brooklyn . The name of this store "was taken from the name of the previous store," says owner Michael . , a delicatessen that carries a wide range of products from sandwiches and prepared foods to everyday items. It was about 10 years ago, in 2009, that the couple renovated the vacant property and opened it as a skateboard store.

. ." The store inherited not only the name, but also "the refrigerated showcases that had been left behind in the store. The showcase, which would have once been lined with hams and cheeses, is now lined with pins, patches, and other small items (dry goods).

The store is located in the Crown Heights neighborhood, not far from the Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn's largest park. The store, which is both a flower store and a skate store, is constantly crowded with people, even during the daytime on weekdays. Today, the area shines brightly as a popular area for young people, with many fashionable cafes and restaurants, but "when we first opened, it wasn't quite ready yet. . We could afford to operate while repeating trial and error to see what kind of needs we could find. . My first son was born at the same time the store opened. . I think it was that period that made us what we are today.

Why deal with flowers?

Michael was born and raised in New York City, and as a teenager, he was obsessed with skateboarding himself. In college, he attended art school and majored in graphic design. After graduation, he became interested in working in store window displays. He was in charge of displays for various stores, including Nautica, Yohji Yamamoto, and Ralph Lauren. . Her partner, Valentine, is a fashion stylist and designer. The two of them have taken their knowledge and interests and shaped the "Park Deli" from scratch.

There are multiple reasons why they started dealing with flowers. Michael says, "When I was in high school, I had a part-time job delivering flowers at a flower shop," "There were no flower shops in the neighborhood," and "We both love flowers. At first, "it was a skate store that also sold flowers, but now it is more of a flower store that also sells skateboards. . Word of mouth has led to an increase in orders for weddings, parties, and events. The store is also recognized as a dog-friendly store by local residents, and it is not uncommon to see residents walking their dogs and buying flowers in the store.

. The thoughts and feelings about the flower market that we put into the items.

The new Spring/Summer 2019 collection from Park Deli is a collaboration with Battenware, another New York brand.

The relationship between the two designers is that Park Deli has been selling Battenware items for some time, and the designer, Shinya Hasegawa, "was introduced to me by a mutual acquaintance and we have been friends for some time," but this is the first time they have collaborated.

Shinya Hasegawa was in charge of material selection and design for the clothes and hats, and Michael was in charge of graphic design for the clothes. Everything from the embroidery of the patches to the prints are "Made in New York". Both of them in New York collaborating, designing, and making ... it makes a lot of sense.

The address printed on the shirt, "West 28th Street," is in the midtown area of Manhattan; the area around 28th Street has long been home to flower wholesalers and is known as the "Flower District. Michael has always purchased flowers in this area, so it is a familiar place for him and his store.

. In the area, there are many stores that have been in business for three generations of families. . However, in recent years, the number of shops has been shrinking due to soaring land prices. Nevertheless, the vitality and bustle of a wholesale flower shop in a big city, which is different from a street corner flower store, is still alive and well. I would be happy if you could feel the atmosphere of the shop through our items. We hope you will enjoy this sincere worldview along with the fun visuals.
