What made you start running?
I was a decathlete on the track team until my senior year of college. I wanted to continue exercising even after I entered the workforce, but I felt that I could not throw a cannonball or run 100 meters, so I could only continue with middle-distance running. I had been running since I was a student, but it wasn't until I became a working adult that I started running in earnest.
When I hear that you used to be on the track team, I get a stoic image of you.
Not at all. . I like running with others rather than running alone in silence. Recently, I often run with the people in my running club, which also includes Iori. Rather than training, we get together and run as a way to have fun. It's like the people who often play futsal in the park, and I think they like to meet for a futsal reason at a set time. I feel like I'm similar to that feeling.
. You have run many full marathons in your career.
I've completed the race six or seven times . Competitions are a big event thing for me, and I enjoy going to local competitions as if I were traveling with everyone else for a reason. I have even been to Seoul and Honolulu, and I really do go anywhere. . In my case, I think it's not so much the sense of accomplishment of finishing the race, but the fact that we all participate in a single event together. I enjoy the marathon experience, including the gathering before the start and cheering everyone on until they reach the finish line.
So you don't pay much attention to time?
No, actually, I'm quite concerned about it. When I hear the start sound, my former track team blood starts to boil, and I want to reach the goal as soon as possible, even if it's just for a second. My best time is 2 hours 55 minutes, which I set at the Tsukuba Marathon last year. Like this time, I sometimes run with the goal of setting a record, and other times I run with a relaxed, enjoyable approach to the race. . In the past, I even drank alcohol before the start (laughs).
What do you think are the strengths and advantages of "ASICS," as you enjoy running marathons on two fronts?
The fact that it is a Japanese brand and fits Japanese feet, and the fact that the entire sole of the foot feels grounded, as is the case with these shoes, make the functionality of the shoes superior. With other brands of running shoes, there are some that say you cannot run more than a certain number of kilometers in these shoes, but I feel that ASICS shoes can be used for any distance. I have confidence that ASICS shoes are gentle on my feet.
