PROFILE

ILL-Abilities_ILL-Abilities

Founded in 2007 by Montreal-based dancer/motivational speaker Luca Lazilegs Patrier to spread the message of "No Excuses, No Limits" (= no excuses, no limits). An international breakdance crew of seven B-Boys and breakdancers selected from all over the world. The name "ILL" means "great" or "tasteful" in hip-hop culture, and instead of emphasizing the negative aspects such as "disabilities," they work with a positive mindset to push the limits in their own way.

Watch the documentary "Bones Brigade."
Many ideas came to mind.

. First of all, how did you yourself come to break dance?

Luca "Lazylegz" Patuelli ("Luca"):I was born in Montréal, Canada, spent most of my teenage years in Washington, DC, Maryland, and moved back to Montreal when I started college. I started dancing when I was 15 years old. I was active as a kid, so I figured I should do something physical, so I played a variety of sports: soccer, base-hall, and football. . and before I started dancing, I had a passion for skateboarding. You would paddle with your knees on the boat and use your arms to hold the deck down and try to do ollies, 50-50s, and other tricks. After my knee surgery, I couldn't skateboard anymore because of the open wound, but a fellow skateboarder suggested I try breakdancing, and that's how I discovered skateboarding.

I see that you skateboarded. Who is your favorite company or skater?

Luke:. I was obsessed with Zero Skateboards, and then World Industries. I was obsessed with "Zero Skateboarding," "World Industries," and skateboarders like Chad Masuka and Tony Hawk. . I really like the "Bones Brigade" documentary film. . After I saw that documentary, I thought it was similar to Ill Abilities. . we tour with the best personalities from all over the world. . When I saw the documentary, it gave me a lot of ideas.

How did you learn the breakdance moves?

Luke:Many of my friends do footwork in traditional breakdancing, which uses the feet , but I can't do that. But I couldn't do that. Instead, I did other moves that they couldn't do because of my strong upper body. That was accepted by the hip-hop culture as an individuality. What I appreciate about breakdancing is that it allows me to do moves that I might not have been allowed to do. It's something to be proud of in the hip-hop culture, and with a strong passion, it's possible to do unconventional moves.

. Then, Luka, your strength lies in your upper body and hand movements.

Luke:. that would be. . upper body movements and using the clutch (crutches). Clutch dancing is very rare, but a few of us do it with a clutch . The clutches are made by a company in Philadelphia. It is made of titanium, so it is very light. We are supported by them.

I don't think there are limits to what we can do.

How did you gather the members?

Luke:. I used to participate in breakdance battles around the world. I would get the contact information of attractive dancers I met there and contact them to see if they would be interested in joining us. . I also search for dancers by watching videos on the Internet.

Could you introduce some of the dancers who will be performing in this year's show?

KUJO

Luke:Cudjoe is a dancer from Los Angeles , a legend who has been dancing for over 30 years. He has been an innovator in so many different movements and has been an important figure in spreading them around the world. We are following his footsteps. We are following his footsteps, and he is always giving us advice on our ideas. . His nickname is Crazy Cujo. He is quiet and intelligent, but he also has a crazy side.

REDO

Luke:Lidoo is from the Netherlands. He has a very unique style, with smooth body movements and dancing style. People are amazed when they see him move, because he moves so well. People are amazed when they see him move, because he moves well. I've been with him since the beginning, and I think he is a true b-boy. He is like a big brother to all of us, and he brings a lot of passion to the crew.

CHECHO

Luke:Checho is from Chile. He is very strong. He does all of his moves with just his arms , so he has a lot of power. . He has a funny personality and a great smile. When the mood is bad, he makes everyone laugh and changes the atmosphere, and when there is a fight outside, he is there to protect everyone.

SAMUKA

Luke:Samuca is from Brazil. He lost one of his legs to cancer when he was 14 years old, but before that he didn't dance, and after he lost it, he started dancing after watching Il Abilities videos. He is the youngest of the members, but this is his first time to experience anything. . He has been going to 14 different countries in the last 2 years with Il Abilities to improve his dancing skills.

PERNINHA

Luke:Perninha is also from Brazil. He is the newest of the members, but his bare-bones kind of style is fast, musical, and great moves. He is basically aggressive, but like Checho, he serves to protect everyone. He's very friendly and brings happiness to people .

Other KROPS from South Korea are our DJs, and they are joining us.

What do you, as a genuine B-Boy, want people to feel through your tour?

Luke:. I hope that when people see us perform, they feel the energy. For example, when we come together like brothers from all over the world in one place, like we did this time, I think there is a special energy around Ill Abilities. Our slogan is "No Excuses, No Limits," and I don't think we have any limits.

Do you have any episodes from the past couple of years that have left a strong impression on you?

Luke:In the year of our 10th anniversary, we organized our own event and did it in Montreal. We had zero funding, but we were able to do it at "Les Grands Ballets Canadiens". We had never done a hip-hop event in a ballet theater before, and we had never had a break dancer on stage before. I was convinced then that the crew could become a company.

. His goal is to be in the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympics with Il Abilities.

. I was so excited to see the movement full of ideas. How do you all maintain your passion?

Luke:My biggest motivation is breakdancing battles. . to fight. I'm not trying to achieve perfection, to do the moves I feel good about, and to capture the sound of good feeling moment by moment. Aiming for the top and practicing hard if you want to arrive at your goal , that's a given. I always do my best and my passion never stops wherever I am.

. By the way, I heard that you once performed at the opening ceremony of the Vancouver Paralympics in 2010.

Luke:. I was the main act at the opening ceremony by myself that time. With that, our goal is to be in the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympics with Ill Abilities! I'm waiting to see if they call me (laughs).

What are the future goals of Il Abilities?

Luke:What we are all talking about is that we will continue our activities and that each of us will have a base. Especially in South America, I would like Checho, Samuca, and Perninha to organize and pass on the message to the younger generation. Also, I hope we can continue to perform around the world and continue to make an impact.

Lastly, please give a message to the people of Japan.

Luke:No Excuses, No Limits . . I hope you will be adaptable and make your own way with a positive mindset.
