Eight designs broke the mold of creativity in Vans' customization contest.

Vans" is a brand supported by men and women of all ages around the world, and is a perfect match for the style of its wearers. Since its early days, the brand has supported the feet of skaters, BMX riders, and surfers, and as you know, it is also extremely popular in the modern fashion scene for its simple look and stable, comfortable fit. Vans is currently holding a shoe customization contest called "2019 Vans Custom Culture. . It is an event where you can freely design your own "AUTHENTIC" shoes. So we asked eight people with a wealth of sensibilities to customize the "AUTHENTIC" in their own way. Take a look at the original pair of shoes that they have created, reflecting their current mood and their own roots.

Do you remember the first time you wore Vans?

When I was in high school, I bought my first pair of "Vans" when I bought "HALF CAB" under the influence of a melo-core band. They were simply comfortable, and I loved the design. Later, I met "Dogtown" and started skateboarding, and I fell in love with "Vans" even more.

What memories do you have of Vans?

I have a lot of "Vans" sneakers, so most of my memories are with "Vans". I wear them when I dress up or skateboard, and my snowboarding boots are also Vans.

What are the key points of customized design?

A mix of skate and anime, with the image of 80's skateboards , but with an original character designed by a girl. The coloring of the skateboard on which the character sits is linked to the sole. Also, we are a pizza shop, so pizza is not out of the question! Anime gives the impression of being stereotypical otaku, but I hope it comes across as something creative and cool. . I think it would be interesting if it becomes a part of street culture in the future, even though it may be in the minority in the public mind now.

How did you like the design?

I usually draw signboards for stores and illustrations that my friends ask me to draw, but they are all designed based on the image of the store or my friends. But this time, I was able to draw 100% of my own taste, and most of all, I enjoyed designing for my favorite "Vans! . It was also exciting to see the contest winner's work commercialized and on store shelves. . I was happy just to see my own design displayed in 3D on the web.

What will you do with the $25,000 prize money?

We make a minimum amount of T-shirts and other items as uniforms for our staff, but we would like to develop them into an independent brand.
