The relationship between mountains, houses, cities and merino wool.

Merino wool is a natural fiber with many excellent functional properties that cannot be imitated by synthetic fibers. Icebreaker, which was born in New Zealand, is now a global merino wool specialist and has established itself as the number one brand in the world. We asked Jerry Ukai, an illustrator and designer, a member of "Ultra Heavy" and "Mountain Poor Boys," and a serious outdoor enthusiast, to talk about the appeal of merino wool.

PROFILE

Jerry Cormorant
Illustrator, Designer

A popular illustrator who enjoys mountaineering in Japan and other parts of the world. He has recently been active in writing, including a book by Jerry Marquez, published last year, about how the mountains changed a young boy's life. In addition, he has released "SOTOKEN," a book about outdoor fun in an outdoor fashion magazine.

When I go to the mountains, I wear 100% merino.

Jerry's first contact with Merino wool was also in the mountains.

When I first started mountaineering, everyone told me that mesh undershirts were good, so I bought one, and it was good, but the smell was really bad. (Laughs.) Then I got a merino base layer and it was so good that I thought, 'What the heck, I should have worn this from the beginning.

People often talk about the comfort of merino wool, such as its soft feel, its natural temperature and moisture control properties, its odor resistance, and its ability to keep you cool even when wet, but what exactly attracted Jerry to it?

Of course, merino clothes have a good texture and comfort that you can feel when you put your sleeves on them, but you can't tell the true value of merino clothes just by wearing them in a room. But you can't tell the true value of merino clothing just by wearing it in a room. Comfortable clothing is a feeling you get from other materials as well. But there are times when I go to the mountains and the weather is a little bad, and later I realize, "Well, that didn't make me too uncomfortable. When I'm in the mountains, I'm so absorbed in various things that I don't know if it was the clothes or what, but after repeating such experiences several times, I realized that "Oh, it's thanks to Merino that I'm able to spend each time comfortably. I'm kind of insensitive or spaced out, so I don't get it the first time (laughs). Then all my friends around me started wearing Merino, and they started saying, "Merino is good, Merino is good," and I thought, "Oh, I was right after all! I was right!

I think that backpacks, shoes, burners, and other mountain gear are all fine to some extent, but the parts that come in contact with your skin are important. As long as you wear good Merino, you can have a good time in the mountains. And if you have proper rainwear. That's why I wear 100% merino tops and underwear. If I go to the mountains, I wear merino, and that's all I have. Even if I wear merino for several days and sweat a lot, it doesn't smell so bad. That means I can reduce the number of changes of clothes and lighten my luggage when I go to the mountains, so that's good too.
