OUTDOOR PRODUCTS is known as the creator of the original daypack. Based on this authentic design, a backpack was recently created from scratch by YOUNG & OLSEN The DRYGOODS STORE, Outdoor Products, and Huinamu. I don't want to be too forward, but the result is really good. We asked Mr. Yuhi Ozaki of Young & Olsen (hereafter Young & Olsen), who was in charge of the design, to talk about what he was conscious of in the special order and the appeal of "Outdoor Products. We have taken Outdoor Products for granted until now, but what exactly is it that makes it so appealing to so many people?

It's crazy simple and I quite like it myself.

HNF (Hui-Nam's festival) was held in October, and we made a daypack under the triple name of "Outdoor Products," "Young & Olsen the Dry Goods Store," and "Hui-Nam.

Ozaki:I came up with the idea while looking at catalogs. I thought that many readers of "Finamu" would respond to the keyword "90's," so I looked at catalogs from the 90's, including those from around that time.

Which model was actually the source of the idea?

From the catalog of 2000. The minimal amount of information is reminiscent of the period of that time.

Ozaki:This is it. It's a backpack with the slightly exaggerated name "RANGER" (laughs). (Laughs.) It is an item in the kids' category. When I saw this, I thought "bungee cords" would be a good idea.

What is this code for?

Ozaki:This is for tucking your jacket in here when it gets hot outdoors. So I think this detail is useful in early spring or early fall.

It's hot on trains and indoors in winter, so people take off their jackets, and I think this would be useful for such occasions. Looking at the shape closely, it seems that there is another model as a base.

Ozaki:Yes, it is. We combine the Ranger with basic models such as the 4066U and 4065U. It is an easy-to-use model. The zipper goes all the way down to the bottom, and the opening is wide enough for easy loading and unloading.

Are there any other areas you were particular about?

Ozaki:The size has been slightly enlarged. Inside, there are no particular device pockets, and we have kept it as simple as we dared. I don't think people would probably use a pen holder or something like that (laughs).

I've seen other special orders and they look colorful, but this one is pure black. What is the true meaning behind this?

Ozaki:It's a basic item, so I went with black, which everyone likes (laughs). (Laughs) The fabric is Cordura nylon, just like the original Outdoor Products. The more you use it, the more it tastes good and the more supple it becomes, so I hope you enjoy that feeling. The function and appearance are very simple, and I like it myself. I think the bungee cords are a nice accent, and I hope people will use it everyday.

Outdoor Products has the coolness of ultimate simplicity.

Lastly, is there anything you would like to achieve at Outdoor Products?

Ozaki:I would like to create a situation where ordinary products are always appreciated. There are many models out there, but the "452U" is always considered to be good.

I think it is important to keep the basics so that the standards will not go out of style forever.

Ozaki:I think it is also true that if you know the perfection of a simple item and then look at various items, you will see it in a different way, and it will be easier to understand the quality of the item itself.

Ozaki:Yes, it is. There is a reason why they are called masterpieces. It is important to know that first. For example, in the case of the "452U," the front part is made of one part. I think this is a design born from American rationalism, but it is also complete in appearance. That is why it has remained unchanged for a long time.

The reason why I never put inside pockets on the leather tote bags I make for Young & Olsen is because there is a good point in making them just bags. If you add a lot of things to it, it gets heavier and heavier, and it looks out of place. In the same way, "Outdoor Products" has the coolness of something ultimately simple, and I hope that will continue to be appreciated in the future.
