PROFILE

He is a member of OKAMOTO'S and one of the best bassists in Japan who also plays support bass for many artists. He is also a keen observer of glasses, which he has worn since he was a teenager.
Chapter 1 . shifting tastes and a commitment to spectacles.
Hama-san is known for his iconic glasses, and I understand that he has a long history of wearing glasses.
Hama:I was in junior high school, so I was about 14 or 15 years old . At first, I chose frames without realizing it, and they were unbelievably uncool. 19 years old, when I made my debut and started going out in public, I became more conscious of what looks good and what doesn't, not only with glasses but also with my own appearance.
I get the impression that you are wearing metal frames these days. Are you particular about the design and materials?
Hama:In the beginning, I was safe and chose plastic with black rims, etc. At the time, I thought that gold and silver metal might be too flashy or too difficult, and I wondered how much I would be able to handle them. However, it was recommended to me that gold and silver metal glasses are more comfortable to wear and are not as difficult as I thought they would be, so I have been wearing metal glasses for the past three years. Thanks to this, I feel that black-rimmed glasses give too strong an impression, and I can't go back to wearing them. Glasses are so different that people who don't need to wear them can't tell the difference in appearance between those sold in street stores and those of famous foreign brands. Of course, I don't think it is the difference in price, but honestly speaking, if it is difficult to tell the difference, I would prefer to choose a well-designed pair.

Do you choose glasses that do not have too strong a character?
Hama:It is easy to say "unique," but I do not think that eccentric shapes are the only way to be unique. However, I try to look for things that deviate a little from what is out there in the world. It is surprising to find something that makes people ask, "That's interesting, where is it from? It is surprisingly difficult to find something that people ask, "Where did you get that? Even so, I still buy at least two pieces a year.
. There are many musicians of the past who wore glasses as icons in the world of rock and jazz. Are you aware of that?
Hama:Yes . . I am proud of the fact that I have become an icon because I interpret it as part of my face, as a part of my face. Lately, there are many bassists with beards, all backs, and glasses (laughs). So I am not an originator at all, but because there are more and more of them, I can't lose, and I have a kind of ambition to express that I am different from the others.

. As a musician, do you often move around in live performances?
Hama:I don't shake my head or jump at all , so I have no concerns about performance. . however, I do sweat, so I do slip down. When you look down and play the bass guitar, you can't help but shift your position. I play while thinking about which beat I should correct the misalignment. In the 10 years since my debut, I have naturally learned that timing (laughs).
