Why we are crazy about bonfires.
Fire Meister Masaya Ino tells his story.

Camping is all the rage right now . Campfires are also booming at an unprecedented rate. In this context, Masaya Ino, a.k.a. "Campfire Meister," has published his first book, "The Book of Campfires. Why are people attracted to flickering flames? Writer Issey Enomoto, an old acquaintance of Mr. Ino's and a fellow bonfire lover, sat down with him around a bonfire to talk about all things bonfire-related.

The campfire is a versatile communication tool.

. But now you like bonfires, don't you? What made you decide to do so?

Inono:I once started a clothing brand, which failed and put me in deep debt. One day, my father called me in to talk to me, and we sat around the campfire and talked about this and that. About my job, about my future, about my debts ....... At that time, I thought, "Ah, bonfires open people's hearts. My parents and I were never close, but I felt that we were able to have a heart-to-heart talk for the first time around the fire. That experience may have been the starting point of my bonfires.

I read your book, "The Book of Bonfires," and I was struck by some of your words. Among them, the one that particularly resonated with me was, "A bonfire has the power to establish a place, even if it is silent. . It is true.

Inono:It is not lonely to build a bonfire alone, and if you surround it with friends, you can deepen your friendship, and even make friends with people you have never met before. I think bonfires are a versatile communication tool.

. we want to make bonfires a familiar extension of everyday life.

I ask you again, what is the charm of bonfires for you, Mr. Ino?

Inono:Why are people attracted to bonfires? It's a question often asked. ." "Because that's where the wood is," I often answer jokingly. I sometimes answer in a joking way, but I don't think you need a clear reason to build a bonfire. Just looking at the flickering flames is a nice feeling . Isn't that enough?

Do you have a fire master?

Inono:The book "The Complete Guide to Campfires" is my bible. Also, I learned a lot from YouTube (laughs). My father also had a great influence on me. My father worked for the Japanese Red Cross Society and went to the site of the Japan Airlines jumbo jet crash and the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. His survival skills are extraordinary.

Nowadays, solo camping is booming.

Inono:I don't work alone. It's more fun to work with others.

Do you have anything you would like to say about the current campfire culture?

Inono:Many people may think of bonfires as something out of the ordinary, but I want to make bonfires an extension of our daily lives, something more familiar to us. That is why I have published this book on bonfires. All human activities are in fact an extension of our daily lives, and there should be no boundary that separates the ordinary from the extraordinary. The world may not change all at once, but I would like to use the current boom as an opportunity to restore bonfires as a culture rooted in daily life. That is what I am thinking.
