Reebok x Mountain Research Special Talk

With Reebok, Loose Socks, and Trellis.

The collaboration between MOUNTAIN RESEARCH and Reebok has attracted many sneaker freaks with the release of three models so far. The latest long-awaited collaboration is the "DMX Trail Shadow" in a new color, Ice Gray! . But I'm also a bit curious about the "socks" used in the look. The styling for this issue was done by HOUYHNHNM's well-known artist, Akira Ishikawa, and the "socks" used in the look are by "Mr. Ishikawa", who is also known as "Mr. Ishikawa". And speaking of Mr. Ishikawa, he is known for his "kushukushu socks. Mr. Ishikawa's fashionable mind led to a chance encounter between "Reebok" and "a pair of socks. This was quite an interesting encounter. We asked Mr. Abe, the designer of "Mountain Research," to talk about Mr. Ishikawa's secret thoughts.

For Reebok,
Those loose socks!

Ishikawa:I've styled for Mountain Research several times since their early catalogs, but I haven't done so recently. It had been a while since I had received a styling order, and to my surprise, it was for a "Mountain Research" x "Reebok" project. I have to tell you, Abe, that these are the original loose socks! In fact, they were already in the first, or rather the second, catalog that I styled.

Abe:I remember when you were styling this time, you said, "It's EG Smith! when you were styling this time, right? But I don't remember loose socks. We must have been brainwashed long before that (laughs).

Among the looks he has worked on so far, he has used "Easysmith.

Here is the actual sock I used.

Ishikawa:Actually, there is a link between loose socks and "Reebok. The LA casual base, known in Japan as "paragals," would change the laces on their Reebok white high-cut shoes to something flashy, and wear Easy Smith socks. I mean, it had to be "EASY SMITHS! This was before the loose socks craze. The night before the kogyaru boom . This is really fashionable Shibuya.

Abe:Easy Smith" are socks for mountaineering, right?

Ishikawa:They used to sell them at Sony Plaza, of course, but also at Redwood and other places. I think they called them "boot socks." They were more like "outdoor fashionable socks. I kind of had the image of an American "Timberland" deck shoe crumpled up, rather than a London "Dr. Martens" boot girl.

Ishikawa:Seriously, I remember when W. Asano and others were wearing dressy laced up boots and "EASY SMITHS" with a touch of "cushioning". I guess it was the "Shibu-Kaja" era before "Chimer," from the 80s to the early 90s.

Abe:W Asano's styling, I remember!

Ishikawa:I was just starting my fitness and sports style work when "Tarzan" was launched. This was around the time that Reebok's high-cut fitness shoes were blowing up. Andy Warhol wore them with black jeans, even Mick Jagger wore them on stage, and Angus Young of AC/DC wore them in the early 1990s.

Abe:Why is that?

Ishikawa:That's how popular it was. Maybe because Angus Young had a bad back from playing that way (laughs). But that's not an athlete's sports shoe, just as a street casual shoe.

Abe:So Reebok is the pioneer.

Ishikawa:There aren't that many fitness shoes. You mean shoes for dancing. . So, I think it's around Olivia Newton John's "Physical. . That's why I've been wearing "Easysmiths" from the very beginning of this styling. . By the way, this is a pair I bought more than 30 years ago.
