What made you decide to become a hair and makeup artist?
When I was in junior high school, I was impressed by Katsuya Kamo, who made headpieces for COMME des GARCONS and UNDERCOVER. At first, I only followed the hairstyles in the collections, but then I became interested in fashion as well. I have loved art since I was a child, and I have always drawn pictures, which is how beauty and art came together.
What do you find rewarding about hair and makeup?
Sometimes my ideal style and what the client is looking for are different, and I think it is the job of hair and makeup to express them in a balanced manner. . I think this is both difficult and fun to pursue. There are some people who say they don't like such orders, but I, on the contrary, find it motivating.
Do you feel like painting when you do hair and makeup?
Yes, there is. I also draw sketches when I create a design.
What kind of fashion do you like?
I'm always rough around the edges, regardless of genre, and I wear sneakers almost every day. I wear sneakers of various designs, but I kind of like the ones that look like they are from the 90s. . They have a high-tech feel, and the soles are voluminous.
Q: Why did you choose Air Force 1 this time?
I've always wanted to wear Air Force 1s, and they are a must-have pair of sneakers that have a classic quality and go with any outfit. Also, the other day on the set, everyone except me was wearing Air Force 1s (laughs). We were of different ages, but I thought it was cool that they were loved by people of all ages.
What do sneakers mean to you?
. It's the star of the show. My theory is that as long as the head and feet look good, the pants and top can be simple. . Therefore, I think I am very particular about my hair style and shoe selection.
Q: You launched your own brand "Zion" in September of this year. Have you always wanted to try your hand at making clothes?
I had a chance to make a design that I wanted, and I wondered how many times I wished I could have made it. When I was first asked if I would like to make clothes, I had just started my career in hair and makeup. After working on the brand, I realized that I could experiment with hair and makeup even when creating visuals, and that it was a good experience for me.
What is the concept behind the creation of "ZION"?
I wanted to express a messy view of the world. The reason for this is that, like myself, I feel that I am too caught up in the backbone of my clothes, and that there is an established equation that says, "If I wear this dress, I should wear it this way. I felt uncomfortable with myself for having even a slight sense of that, so I decided to create a chaotic atmosphere by allowing myself to wear the clothes more freely. For example, there is a hoodie with fringe on it, and I think I was able to express the feeling of being bugged by adding fringe to a street item.
Do you have any influences from the classics or old school?
I am the youngest of three brothers, and I have been wearing hand-me-downs since I was a child, so I may have subconsciously imprinted values such as liking old things. I used to wear the clothes my parents wore in the 90s without thinking twice about it, so I feel that I was able to adopt both new and old clothes without feeling any sense of discomfort.
. I also like recycle stores. . Unlike fashionable thrift stores, they are not edited and randomly placed. I sometimes get hints for my hair and makeup from things that catch my eye. I have actually used American toy blocks. . It may not be the same as the classics, but I am often influenced by things from the past.
