Oh, what can I say, this blurring of the chest. I know that I messed up at the school festival, I know about the heartbreak, and I know about the blue asshole. Sweet, salty, and filled with a strong feeling. We don't see each other often, but when we do, we can instantly return to the days when we were idiots. The movie "Kurenazume," which depicts the "friendship" of six men in their twilight years, reminds us of those endless days with our old friends. To commemorate the release of the film, Kengo Kora, a member of the cast, and director Matsui had a 30-minute talk! With the setting sun in the background, what comes to mind fut...

Fun is not the only way to shorten the distance.

What did you put into the title of this work, "Kurenazume"?

Daigo Matsui ("Matsui"):This story was performed on stage in 2017. The play doesn't have a set content, and we make a flyer with the title on it when we don't have a script yet. Then I thought it would be nice to have a story about a guy who is gone, but is still around, and if anything, more alive than the guy who is still alive. A group of good friends are hovering vaguely between the wedding reception and the after-party, in a state somewhere between day and night. I wondered what words could be used to describe that. Then I remembered the entertainment at the wedding reception that my high school classmates had asked me to do. We were talking about how fun it would be to play handbells with a red fountain, and when we tried it, it was a big flop... (laughs).

You are experiencing the same horrible atmosphere as the six people in the movie.

Matsui:That's right. The song at that time was "Kuru-Namu-Machi no~♪" by Kaientai, which begins with the lyrics "Kuru-Namu-Machi no~♪" (meaning "the town of Kuru-Namu"). I wondered what "kurenazumu" meant, so I looked it up. It means a state in which the sun seems to be setting, but it doesn't. It's just a state. It is just a state, so keep on trying not to sink! I then consulted with the members of the troupe and decided on hiragana.

I felt that the imperative form of the word "command" implied a desire to spend the same time with friends, although it is actually difficult to do so. How did you feel when you heard the title?

Kengo Kora ("Kora"):I thought it was lovely. Between you and me, I thought the word "kurenazume" referred to when the sun was setting until about halfway through the shoot....

Matsui:Like "kurenazume" = sunset. Later, I would say, "That's the imperative form.

Kora:I entered the scene without realizing it... I felt like someone who hadn't read the script properly. There is a line that goes, "Kurenazundenna~" (laughs).

Matsui:Haha. No, it's not a play at all.

It is a story about a reunion with Yoshio in the three hours leading up to the after-party, where he reexamines his memories of his friends and the friendship itself. What did you yourself want to portray?

Matsui:Originally, I drew this for friends I would never see again, and I wanted to simply say, "You are among us," and that was all I cared about. But when you draw a story like that, if you let your mind wander, it can easily turn sad, so I tried to avoid that and keep it light and fun. I wasn't trying to convey anything in particular.

When you meet and get involved with various people, what kind of person can you call a friend? I know it sounds formal to say "conditions" or "rules," but please tell me what connects you to your friends.

Kora:We have been in the same class since the first year of high school, moved to Tokyo together, became actors together, are now managers at our own agency, are married, and recently had a child together...so we have had a very long relationship from our school days until now. I often wonder about my relationship with him.

Matsui:It's a good relationship.

Kora:Yes, I did. I felt the same feeling with this film and with my co-stars. There is a mood in which it is not necessary to be very clear about what is between us. Even though we are close to each other, we don't exchange words properly. I think that a person with whom you can share a good, vague, and loose feeling is a friend you can stay with for a long time. It's not black and white at all.

Also, fun and happiness are easy to share and understand because they are lively emotions, but it is hard to share the points that make you feel lonely. But someone who understands this is a friend.

Matsui:Kora, that's good. You got a good answer.

Kora:I did (laughs). Thank you very much. I don't feel like I have to see my local friends or the friends I made after moving to Tokyo all the time to check in with each other. I always love you all.

Matsui:As I listened to Mr. Takara's story, I thought that, putting aside the feelings of fun, we get along well when we share the same bad words (laugh). (Laughs.) If they share the same feeling of "I can't do this," they become good friends.

Kora:Isn't that what you think when you see a movie? More than "That's good, isn't it?"...

Matsui:It is true that people who can say to each other, "Isn't that awful? I think that the more people you can say to each other, "Isn't that terrible? If anything, the more the work is regarded as good in the world, the more it becomes fuel for the opposite. The more people think the work is good in the world, the more fuel it becomes. (laughs).

Kora:Ha ha.

Matsui:The other thing that instantly makes us friends is talking about the bottom line (laughs). On the set of "Kurenazume," I felt like we were old friends when we talked about the bottom line. The power of undertones is a mystery.
