STANCE and unravel the indomitable style of these young expressive artists.

The sock brand "STANCE" was born in California, U.S.A. in 2010. The brand offers fashionable socks based on West Coast culture, such as art and skateboarding. Their message is "conventional is boring. We asked five young fashionistas who embody this slogan to try on a pair of "STANCE" socks to find out more about who they are and what they are all about. What is their stance, which is to continue to walk on the rails they have laid out for themselves, outside of the norm?

What is the attraction of skating from your point of view?

I lived in New York until I was 18 years old and moved to Japan for college, but I didn't have any friends and was alone for a few months. But when I skated, I naturally started to connect with people, and the common language of skateboarding saved my life. I can't stop skating.

Are there any skaters who have influenced you?

There is no absolute icon, and I think I am influenced by everyone I see. I like the way of life of a certain person, or the tricks of a certain person, and I absorb them little by little.

You said earlier that you can't stop skating, but do you plan to continue skating?

. I would like to continue working in the skateboarding industry. However, I think I am more suited to be a backup skater rather than a main skater, so I would like to support young skaters, for example. Even if I am not a skater, I would like to do something as a skateboarder.

Stance, the company you wore today, also produces socks for skaters.

I knew about the brand from the beginning. Many of the skaters around me were also wearing them.

What did you think when you actually tried them on?

Anyway, they are soooo comfortable to wear. They also seem to absorb sweat. It's hard to skateboard with socks that don't absorb sweat. . I wear shoes all the time, so they get stuffy and stinky.

What do you think of the design?

I try to wear socks that I like for a long time, and I don't wear socks with designs on them, but these socks have a design on the top, which is nice. I don't wear socks that have designs on them, but I like that this one has the design on the top.

What is the point of coordination?

Most of my clothes are from stores I know rather well, the T-shirts are from my friend's skate crew "youth no yousu" and the pants are from my friend's vintage clothing shop. . I usually skateboard and work at a skate store, so I generally dress rough.

What are your future plans?

Before Corona, I used to organize events with foreign skate teams that came to Japan. I speak English, so I attend to them. I would like to work in a job that makes use of my skills in that way.

Surprisingly, many of the international skaters are of the same generation as me, and it is a valuable opportunity to make friends with them. I am just a store clerk now, but from now on I would like to do something that only I can do.
