Are the times healthy: a health white paper supporting six creatives. Part Two

The days of self-restraint continue in the face of the raging coronavirus. This has given us more and more opportunities to rethink our attitudes toward various things, and in particular, it has become essential to update our health consciousness. The new normal has just begun, but there are creators who have been quick to detect the changes and are taking the lead in adapting. What did they think, how did they act, and what impact did it have on their respective craftsmanship? To find out, we interviewed six creators in January of this year. In the second part, we interviewed Takashi Kumagai, Makoto Tanijiri, and Shinji Shilla. (Excerpt from the magazine "HOUYHNHNM's Unplugged Vol. 12," on sale March 24)

Self-imposed candy and whips that keep the mind and body in balance.

Eat to live . Don't live to eat," were the words of the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, and this is what Takashi Kumagai practices. He has a strong body and is an expert in sports such as surfing, kickboxing, and skiing, but what he is into now is fasting. The reason why he started fasting was to avoid eating out.

Before Corona, I used to have dinners every day and night, and my life was like yakiniku, sushi, and nabe . I tried everything, switching to Japanese food to avoid high-calorie meals, but I ended up drinking too much everywhere I went. . I don't want to stop drinking, but I want to reduce the amount. At that time, an acquaintance told me about a fasting brand, <non-negative (integer)I had never eaten anything for three days in my life. . . but at first it was a hellish ordeal: I had never in my life eaten anything for three days, I suddenly felt lightheaded, and I could not concentrate at all when I was working. . But I managed to get through the fasting period with my strength. But afterwards, I could taste the food more sensitively than I had ever tasted before. I felt lighter and my senses were more alert.

The catharsis that came after overcoming nine days of hardship, including two days of preparation, five days of fasting, and two days of recovery, opened Kumagai's eyes to the fasting method. He has been following the once-a-month method for a year now. The reason for his persistence may be his high level of perseverance, but it is not the only reason. She taught me that it is a good spice to spoil yourself a little.

Some people eat only porridge or soup before fasting, but I want to feel like I'm eating well. Some people eat only porridge or soup, but I want to feel like I've eaten a good meal and feel good about myself. So, I go to a famous soba restaurant and eat toasted buckwheat noodles.

For Kumagai, buckwheat noodles are a way to fill up before going into battle, and also a trigger to break the temptation to eat. It seems that the candy and whip he gives himself have a positive effect not only on his body, but also on his lifestyle.

I started fasting one year ago, and I have lost about 1,000 pounds, and I have the best score on my physical exam, which I started going to when I was 40 years old. Also, when I don't go out to dinner anymore, I have more time to spare. I come home and have nothing to do, so I clean the house and do household chores. My wife appreciates that. It's a win-win situation. But as my weight goes up, the amount of things I watch on Netflix goes down as well (laughs).

Rest for the stomach and mind is the cure for corona!

If you're in shape, you're smarter, and time is slimmer. When I hear that, I can't help but find fasting appealing. However, one may also be concerned that the body's immune system may be weakened by the dietary restrictions. . I thought so too at first, but quite the opposite. . I can clearly feel it, and the quality of my sleep is also improved. You can clearly feel it, and the quality of your sleep is much better. This is why people say, "Fasting cures cancer. There is no better way to fight coronas. . But of course, it is also important to take in the necessary nutrition and to exercise moderately. I'm into golf right now, and in total I walk about 10 kilometers. Golf is perfect for fasting because I don't have to move too hard. When the body and stomach are rested, the mind is also rested. In the end, I think everything is connected.

Rest for the stomach and the mind. This philosophy seems to me to be a way of life in today's hustling and bustling society. So, what do you think about the young people of today?

. when you're young, it's fine to eat large portions and drink alcohol every day. But moderation is the key to everything, and if you are over 35 and binge drinking, the composition of your body will change. . It's hard to improve your constitution when that happens. So it is better to do it in your thirties. Eat when you want to eat , and rest when you need to rest. Fasting is a repetition of that. As I get a little older myself, I'd like to eat fewer dinners and switch to a healthier diet. But I don't want to become an old man who is just skin and bones. I secretly long to be an old man who is healthy and reasonably well-fleshed out.

Listening to Ms. Kumagai, one realizes that the essence of fasting is not to abstain from food, but to think about one's eating habits. For a healthy future, Ms. Kumagai is practicing "Eat to Live" today.
