STYLE & PLAY GREAT YARD A store where you can encounter new "sports and fashion" guided by up-and-coming stylist Tatsuya Shimada.

Sports have become an indispensable part of recent fashion trends. On March 18 (Sat), "STYLE & PLAY GREAT YARD Omotesando," a select store that has these two elements of fashion and sports at its core, will open along Cat Street in Harajuku, Tokyo. With stylist Tatsuya Shimada, who styled the store's image visuals, as our guide, we explored the store's appeal and what kind of store it will be.

Mr. Tatsuya Shimada, Stylist

-First of all, how did you feel when you were in charge of styling the store's image visuals?

shimada coiffureThe theme of this project was to create visuals that were linked to the movie and still images, so I was able to tackle the project with a fresh mindset. The basic concept of the project was based on the movie, and we styled a total of 10 looks according to that structure. The creators involved are all wonderful people, and I hope you will see them in person.

-The movie features the artist Taichi Mukai, doesn't it?

shimada coiffureYes, that's right. Kento Yamada, a visual artist and VJ for "yahyel," is in charge of overall direction, and music producer starRo is handling the backing music. The music producer, starRo, is in charge of the background music, and I imagine that Taichi Mukai was invited to be a featured artist. I think the finished product is similar to a music video.




-All the young artists who are hot right now are here. The models were all young youths.

shimada coiffureYes, I wanted to emphasize reality, and I also wanted the styling to focus on the younger generation.

-Did you have a styling concept?

shimada coiffureThe store itself is a select store that mixes sports and fashion, so I was conscious of that, but I did not want the style to be too sporty. I tried to create a styling that would blend in with fashion, with the sports brand items at the core.

-First of all, what was your impression when you saw the finished store?

shimada coiffureWhen I was styling the items, there were still a few samples, so I did not have a full picture of what they looked like. I was glad to see that the "sports and fashion" that I had envisioned when styling the store was well embodied. For example, the second floor is divided into sections for each brand, mainly sports brands, but the refined lineup and interior atmosphere of the first floor creates a sensory illusion, or rather, there is a sense of crossover that blends well.

On the first floor, you will find a wide range of popular domestic brands such as White Mountaineering, Converse Tokyo, and a joint collection by N. Hollywood and Mountain Hardware, as well as street brands such as Sanova Cheese and Chari & Co. and "Chari & Co.

-As you mentioned earlier, the theme of the shop is sports and fashion, and the lineup is different from existing select stores in that it is characterized by unexpectedness. What is your impression of such a selection?

shimada coiffureI'm glad to see that there is a lineup of brands that can only be found here. Many of the items are cute even when seen by women. I also thought the denim collection on the first floor was interesting. The fact that there are denim and street items in a store with this world view makes it unique and gives the customer a wider choice of outfits.

-Did you have a sports background yourself, Mr. Shimada?

shimada coiffureI thought, "Well, that's not the case at all (laughs). But on the contrary, I thought that was a good thing. Besides, sports is something that is now commonly touched upon in the field of fashion, and I think it has become a current trend, so I wasn't that concerned about the background.

-What would you suggest in terms of sports and fashion style through the styling this time?

shimada coiffure: To choose freely. I want people to choose freely, not from the viewpoint of fashion or sports, but solely according to their own mood, without categorizing them.

-Lastly, if you were to give the store a nickname so that it would be loved for a long time, do you have any ideas?

shimada coiffureIt's a bit long (laughs). At first, we called it "SPGY," the first letter of the store name. It sounded cooler than simply abbreviating it (laughs).

Climbing the stairs in the center of the store to the second floor, you will find a wide variety of sports-themed items, including sneakers, training wear, and sundries. The lineup is impressive not only for the various sports brands, but also for the highly fashionable series of brands such as Burton Sartin and Columbia Black Label.

The store will also have a gallery space for future workshops and pop-up stores. To celebrate the opening, a workshop will be held from Jan. 18, ( Sat. ) to Jan. 20, ( Mon. ) to silk-screen print popular illustrator WALNUT's artwork on a satchel (limited to customers who purchase products during the period, (The first 100 customers on each day will be able to participate free of charge).

The store will also launch exclusive collaborations with several brands. With so much to talk about, one can't take one's eyes off the opening of this store.
