Design features with colorful fluorescent colors

The label is also unique, but it is a one-size-fits-all design, regardless of the size of the product.

Hirabayashi: I remember making the lowered tag at the end, and I think we talked about something like "mass merchandiser feel". I remember I mentioned something about "mass merchandisers" and how the products they use in mass merchandisers are attractive because they are cost-effective and functional. I thought that the kind of attention to detail that you would find in a typical apparel store, such as changing the size of the price tag to match the size of the product, was not necessary for this brand.

Kaneko: Your initial idea of combining the various tags that come with the bags into one was excellent, but I like this mass retailer-style design best. The fluorescent stickers are in different colors depending on the size of the bag, and you can tell the size by these stickers. I think this is what a sense of product is all about.

. Since I have a strong impression of monochrome in your designs, I was surprised to see you use fluorescent colors, even in some parts.

Hirabayashi: To me, fluorescent color is not a color. It is the same as black and white. . It's a design choice, and it's also a choice I make when I buy things. I wonder why.

Kaneko: "Fluorescent is not a color" , that's a great one-liner! It is true that stationery post-its are fluorescent, and so are construction site uniforms. It may be a product color rather than a fashion color. We don't come up with that idea ourselves, so hearing it from a graphic designer's point of view is a great reminder to us.

That's a valuable experience. . I think it's great that you are able to do so in an environment that specializes in bags.

Kaneko: . yes, that's right. When I stood in the storefront of "The Recreation Store," I realized that serving customers with bags is a lot of fun. With clothes, there are various speculations, sizes, and preferences, and I think a person's strike zone becomes narrower. . But with bags, the only factors that affect the choice of bag are the intended purpose and the color, so it's simple. . That's why I don't have any resistance to talking to customers from here. What do you use it for? What colors do you like? . "It would be cool to leave it in the trunk of your car," and so on. . It is easy to communicate with them, unlike "This leather jacket is cool because it looks like this. Hirabayashi-san, is there a bag you are interested in?

Hirabayashi: . I don't change my bag according to the clothes I wear. I have so much stuff that switching it around would be an accident, and I don't want to waste my time doing that. I have a lot of cloth totes, but basically I have three bags: a small diagonal bag, a large bag for my laptop, and an extremely large bag for travel. But when I looked at the bags from "Outdoor Products," I thought it would be nice to have a variety of large bags for different purposes. This one looks like it would be useful for holding Band-Aids (laughs), and the large Boston bag could easily hold a tennis racket.

Kaneko: Well, it's simple . On the contrary, I have a lot of bags. Do you have few clothes?

Hirabayashi: . there is a quantity. . but it's basically a setup. I don't have any feeling that it would be fun to put this and that together (laughs). I buy about three things at a time if I like them. . I buy one to wear, a spare, and a spare's spare. And I don't want the top and bottom to deteriorate differently, so even if I only wear the top, I wash the pants together, and we do the same number of launderings.

Kaneko: I have a lot of ideas that I don't have, and I'm learning a lot from them.

. I wonder what would happen if Kaneko-san served Hirabayashi-san.

Kaneko: I might get knocked down a peg or two (laughs).
