Owner of "Broccoli playhair," a hair salon with the concept of "a hair salon that does not serve any customers. While running on the road on a daily basis, he is also well versed in trail running. He is also a member of the "Chicken Heart Running Team" based in Yoyogi, Tokyo.
If you run in the morning, you will perform better that day.
Please tell us why you started running.

Fujikawa:I have always played baseball and was a member of a grassroots baseball team. When I was 30 years old, I opened "Broccoli playhair" and took a new step forward as a hair stylist, but I was much busier than I expected and couldn't play baseball anymore. But I never missed a drink every day, and I was getting bigger and bigger (laughs). I decided that I couldn't go on like this, so I started running to lose weight.
How long did you run in the beginning?
Fujikawa:I started this with a friend of mine, and we first planned to run to Kichijoji, have a drink, and go home. The distance was about 10 kilometers. But after about 8 kilometers, I felt I had reached my limit, so I went straight to a public bath and took a cab to Kichijoji (laughs).
(laughs). But to suddenly run 8 kilometers is amazing.
Fujikawa:It's not easy to run, is it? But my muscles were sore the next day.
You didn't think about quitting at that time?
Fujikawa:I realized that beer tastes really good after running. Then the routine of running, drinking, and going home was born. Running was my way of going out for a drink.

You started out as a dieter, but your goal gradually shifted (laughs).
Fujikawa:As a result, I'm taking in calories, but well, it's better than not running (laughs).
Did your body change?
Fujikawa:It didn't change right away. At first, I ran only once a week, but that number gradually increased, and I gradually shifted my mindset from going out to drink to going out to run. Then my body started to change.

So you started to enjoy running.
Fujikawa:No, it wasn't so much that I enjoyed running, but rather that I enjoyed watching my body lose weight. When I got on the scale, I saw that I was losing weight, my stomach was getting smaller, and there were visible results.
How fast were you running at that time?
Fujikawa:I was running about twice a week, about 10 kilometers, at a pace of about 6 1/2 minutes/km. I don't know because I didn't keep a log at the time, but I think I was running about 80 km per month.
How fast are you running now?
Fujikawa:I may or may not pull it out once a week, and I run a little over 10 km almost every morning or evening. The distance is about 100 km per week. That's less than 400 km per month. I live in the Yoyogi area, and there are many hills in that area, so it's good practice.
I didn't know you ran that much! I heard that you also run trails.
Fujikawa:Yes, I do. The store is closed every Tuesday and every other Wednesday, so I go to the mountains then. I usually run about 30 to 40 kilometers. The distance has increased a lot.

Do you enjoy running now that you enjoyed changing your body at first?
Fujikawa:I enjoy running now. When I am running, I don't have to do anything, and I can be at peace. Of course, there are times when I have to think, but it helps me reset my mind. When I run in the morning, I am able to perform better that day, and I can spend the whole day feeling good. Even when I am extremely tired from work, I can end the day refreshed by daring to run.
