I understand that you are a regular customer of "UNIQLO".

Araya: Yes . . The T-shirt I am wearing today is the same, a graphic T-shirt from Haruki Murakami's novel. Also, although the drawing is different from the one I am wearing today, I bought a UT Snoopy sweatshirt at "UNIQLO" a while ago, and I still wear it to this day.

I see that you also like these cute graphics.

Araya: I like characters that are cute, but have a poisonous sense of humor, such as Kojikoji and Chibimaruko-chan in Japan . Snoopy is cute at first glance, but he also says things that have meaning. Also, Yuya, the guitarist of yonawo, told me that there is a Christmas version of Snoopy's soundtrack, and it is really good.

. I like books, and I have seen your articles on books.

Araya: I just finished reading "Quantum Dreams of the Universe in the Cradle of the Uncertainty Principle" by Haruo Saji. I just finished reading it today. I thought the title of the book, which explains physics through the words of philosophers and poets, was interesting. For example, there are similarities between music, mathematics, and physics, and I made many discoveries while reading the book.

What kind of books do you like?

Araya: I like pure literature and novels , and I also like science books like the ones I just mentioned. . I don't read books for the sake of writing lyrics, but the lyrics can be influenced by the books I read. Of course I like emotional stories as well as rational ones, but I prefer to have a bird's eye view of a situation where I am immersed in an emotional one.

I heard that you stayed in Canada for a work holiday after graduating from high school . Did going abroad change your perception of Japan and the Japanese language?

Araya: Before I went, I wanted to write songs in English at first. I also liked the Beatles. . But when I actually studied English over there, I realized once again the advantages of the Japanese language. . I learned about the good aspects of the ambiguity and expansiveness of the Japanese language in a foreign country. For example, I was surprised when I looked up the etymology of the word "sayonara," and was told that the German and English words are derived from a word that means "be with God," but the Japanese word "sayonara" was originally a conjunction. The Japanese word "sayonara" was originally a subjunctive, meaning "good-bye" or "farewell. . It gradually came to be used as a farewell word.

. It's interesting to explore the etymology of the word.

Araya: . and it can be used in lyrics and so on. Knowing the etymology of a word, or learning something new, can be a bit of a relief, to put it bluntly. It is interesting to look again at things we normally know.
