Drive You Crazy

Unicorn talks about what the band values and costumes.

Unicorn is in the midst of a tour in support of their album "Twice Island & Shau Island". The tour, which will take them all over Japan, will conclude at the Budokan on November 23 (Tue., national holiday) and 24 (Wed., national holiday). This rock and roll-themed album is, as one would expect from Unicorn, a skilled mix of royalty and playfulness. The tour and costumes that express the essence of this album were designed by Sawa Takai, aka "Sawa-chan," a designer back from New York, and were decided upon by Sawa and leader ABEDON. As we talked about the costumes and the new album, we felt as if we were able to understand what the band Unicorn values. The interview took place during the busy schedule on the day of the concert, and was conducted in a somewhat irregular format, with ABEDON, Tamio Okuda, and EBI together, and Koichi Kawanishi and Isamu Teshima one by one.

Why do the members wear matching outfits?

The image of Unicorn's tour costumes has always been that of a tightsuit. This time, Sawa and leader ABEDON took the lead in creating a set-up that resembles a bowling shirt.

ABEDON:I think many people have an image of Okuda-kun wearing a pieced-together outfit, but things have been a little different for the past couple of years. I was thinking about costumes during recording. Set-ups were my boom.

Okuda:I bought a set-up, too. I'm wearing the top now, and the top and bottom are apart (laughs).

ABEDON:Then there's EBI-chan, who has been wearing vintage clothes a lot lately, and watching everyone's trends, you know.

I see that you are checking the fashion of the members (laughs).

EBI:(Rock 'n' roll (the theme of the album) is all about America. I was not "nibbling on candy" (editor's note: everyone in Unicorn is the king of puns), but I had just started going the American-style route around that time, and I became interested in it and bought a Ska-jan (a type of jacket).

ABEDON:I went to Yokosuka to see if I could find something that would look good on me, like a scajan or bowling shirt, and had a blast. I checked the embroidery patterns and materials, and repeated the process of actually wearing them myself, which was reflected in the costumes for this project.

The embroidery on the costumes is also interesting. It is a mix of Japanese and Western styles.

ABEDON:I was also conscious of the Hawaiian aloha shirt, which is also a blend of Japanese and Western styles. I wanted to bring out that kind of taste. Also, we originally planned to use shorts, but we decided to use pants because not everyone would look good in shorts.

I heard that ABEDON chose the colors "green" and "engine" (the other outfit) as the greatest common denominator from the colors that everyone seems to like.

ABEDON:Basically, I wear pink or something flashy, but not everyone else does. I chose the engine color because it seemed to suit Okuda-kun.

Okuda:Oh, is that me?

ABEDON:That's right. I was thinking of pink for the other one, but Tessie (Teshima) thought maybe not (laughs).

Okuda:That means you have Tessie's best interest at heart (laughs).

ABEDON:I guess you could say that.

EBI:Surprisingly, Tessie may be the most fussy about her clothes.

Okuda:It's too loud, or Tessie might think, "Pink doesn't look good on me.

ABEDON:Since we start from scratch with the dough, we can't take it back if it doesn't turn out well (laughs). That's why you need to switch from pink to pink as soon as possible.

I was surprised that Mr. ABEDON himself went to Yokosuka to do research.

Okuda:(It's because (ABEDON) was into skajans, isn't it? He called it research and bought a lot of them (laughs).

ABEDON:Yes, it is.

Okuda:There was a time when I was looking for and buying all kinds of aloha and such, but I stopped because it was difficult to wear.

The embroidery on the left breast is also a nice touch.

Okuda:I think this outfit is great. If it wasn't a unicorn, I'd buy it (laughs).

EBI:If you wanted, you could have asked me to pull the unicorn's name off the chest.

Okuda:Basically, I don't put my name on my goods. If I don't have my name on it, I can wear it on a daily basis.

EBI:I like the outfit this time because the band name doesn't stand out too much.

DRIVE YOU CRAZY" is embroidered on the back. I guess it means "drive you crazy.

ABEDON:I first thought of "Japan," but it turned out to be "Japan." I asked Sawa-chan, who has been overseas for a long time, and she gave me a good catchphrase. I liked it because it was a phrase that I would not have thought of normally.

The band members are all wearing matching outfits, as in the past and this time as well. What is the purpose of this?

ABEDON:Before the restart, each of us used to wear whatever costumes we wanted on our own. (I once wore a (Bruce Lee) yellow tracksuit.

Okuda:I mean, they seem to get along.

EBI:When you wear the uniform, you feel a sense of unity, or unity on your own.

ABEDON:So. The rest is set up so you don't have to think about it.

Okuda:So it was a connection at first.

ABEDON:I can put it back on, though. But the last time I went to the bathroom wearing a binder, I took it off and it fell down and got wet, so all the members had to change into the other outfit.

Okuda:Once set up, the toilet problem is solved (laughs).

EBI:The next time I order, the basics will be the same, but the design will be slightly different for each person.

Okuda:That's great.

ABEDON:The colors would be consistent, but the design would be slightly different. Tessie would be pleased, especially since those two (Tessie and Kawanishi) are thin.

Okuda:If I make them thinner, Tessie is going to say, "Why do I have to show the line of my pants?

EBI:The connection hides the shape of the body, you know.
