The New Standard of Baseball Caps, Why Key Men Chose Forty-Seven Vol.2 Daisuke Oka

Forty-Seven ('47), an officially licensed MLB (Major League Baseball) brand that originated in Boston, U.S.A., was established in 1947 and has such a deep connection with baseball that it still has stores in MLB stadiums today. The second installment of this series will be held in New York. In the second edition, Daisuke Ohana, designer of "N. HOOLYWOOD," which graced the runway of the N.Y. Collection and has become a truly representative Japanese brand, appears on the show. We asked him about the relationship between Mr. Ohana and TEAM'47, and about the collaboration items between "Forty Seven" and "N. HOLYWOOD".

SPECIAL GUEST

Daisuke Ohana
In 2002, he launched the "N. HOOLYWOOD" collection, a brand that combines his experience working in vintage clothing stores with a new concept in the world of vintage clothing, which he is well versed in. The brand consists of a collection line released seasonally, an underwear line that handles underwear with unique designs, and a compilation line that incorporates fashion into formal wear without being bound by any concept. In recent years, the collection has been presented on the runway at N.Y. Fashion Week. The company also regularly collaborates with popular brands such as Mountain Hardwear and Converse.

An unexpected collaboration between Forty Seven and N. Hollywood. The collaboration would not have been possible without the right timing!

-I don't really have an image of Mr. Ohana wearing a cap, but do you actually wear one?

Japanese pampas grassI think I bought my first cap when I was a freshman in high school. It was a Philadelphia Phillies cap from Backdrop in Shibuya. At the time, I was wearing an Izod Lacoste polo shirt with an engine-colored Phillies cap, which is kind of embarrassing when I think back on it now (laughs).

-What kind of caps are you wearing these days?

Japanese pampas grass: My taste in choice is changing with age. I used to wear a lot of mesh caps, and I used to wear my brims backwards. Recently, I have been working with "forty-seven," and I have become interested in various styles. I currently have short hair, so I am interested in shallow caps like the "CLEAN UP" cap.

-Have you ever heard of the "Forty Seven" brand?

Japanese pampas grassOf course I knew that. If you go to the U.S., you often see people wearing them around stadiums. As a secondhand clothing shop owner, I am also familiar with Twin's Enterprises, the predecessor of Twin's Enterprises.

-How did the first collaboration, which was well received last season, come about?

Japanese pampas grassDKJ: DKJ asked me, "Mr. Ohana, what do you think? and I thought "forty-seven" was a possible collaboration. At that time, I was developing a collection with a typographer who does calligraphy called "MIKITYPE," and I thought it would be interesting to have him draw "NEW YORK" on a baseball cap with the just idea. I thought it would be interesting to have "NEW YORK" painted on a baseball cap. The logo on the front is the same color as the body, black, and "YANKEES" is written on the back. The timing was also perfect, as I was thinking of a spot item.

-What was DKJ's intention in asking Mr. Ohana to do this?

DKJI was interested in what kind of caps he would make, so I had a talk with him. I talked to him without consulting these two (Araki and Nakamuro) in particular (laugh).

NakamuroWhen I realized it, they had already started working on it (laughs).

Japanese pampas grassI guess: You didn't discuss this with these three people behind the scenes.

rough wood: completely ahead of DKJ's time.

NakamuroDKJ does the planning, I do the promotion, and Mr. Araki creates the visuals. However, there is no "horenso" (a word that means "to do things well"), and collaborations like this often start out of the blue... (laughs).

-What did you two think of the first collaboration cap?

rough woodI was like: "This basic design is going to change like this? I was like, "This basic design is going to change like this! It's a design that doesn't exist in inline.

NakamuroYes, it is innovative to include graphics.

'47 × N. HOOLYWOOD First Collaboration Cap *Reference

Japanese pampas grassI was working on the collection with MIKITYPE, and this cap was created because of the calligraphy, typography, and many other elements. I wondered if it would be okay to put the print in the back, but I was right. It really is an item that was made possible because of the timing.

-In other words, if you didn't have the "MIKITYPE" collection, the collaboration might not have come to fruition?

Japanese pampas grassYes, that's right. If it were not for this timing, we would not have done the collaboration. Basically, if the timing wasn't right, I would have turned it down.

DKJ: The timing was really good.

Japanese pampas grassI was just asked about the first project a year and a half ago, but looking back, I see that the circumstances surrounding "forty-seven" have changed a lot in the past year. I feel like the market has changed.

Nakamuro: It was about a year ago that we held the launch event at Jingu Stadium. Thanks to your help, the situation has improved considerably since that time.

DKJI remember I was very happy when Mr. Ohana gave me the OK to launch FortySeven in Japan. I remember I was very happy because Mr. Ohana was the first to give me the OK when I was ready to launch FortySeven in Japan.

A full look at the second collaboration with N. Hollywood!

-I heard that you are planning a second collaboration with "N. Hollywood".

Japanese pampas grass(Looking at samples) When we make samples, we sew the cap specs (specifications) in a prominent place on the front of the cap. The caps are clearly labeled with all the specifications, such as the type of cap and materials used. When I saw that, I thought it was really cool. Of course it looks good, but as a lover of military goods, I am fascinated by this kind of detail. And it's also easy to understand and streamlined in terms of management. I felt that the America I like was contained in this cap. We are now in the process of checking with the US to see if we can collaborate on the design of this sample cap. I am also thinking of making the back of the cap with Velcro and the brim square, assuming that everyone will wear it.

rough woodIt is an interesting idea, isn't it? The fact that you focused your attention on a sample that is not normally publicly available is truly typical of Mr. Ohana, isn't it?

DKJBasically, "forty-seven" does not do many special orders, and we only collaborate with selected brands. Among them, the collaboration item with N. Hollywood is exciting because it is a design you won't see anywhere else. It would be interesting to see a second collaboration featuring the design of this sample cap.

On the next page, we will take a deeper look into the relationship between Ms. Ohana and caps. We will also introduce Forty Seven's recommended items.
