A day of street culture at the Zushi Beach Film Festival.

The Zushi Beach Film Festival is a mirage that appears only during Golden Week. This year, the Zushi Beach Film Festival was held for the first time in three years due to Corona, and was a great success every day with people eagerly awaiting such a tradition. The "Street Culture Day" on May 5, in particular, was a day full of events, with skaters coming from all over the country, a splendid DJ lineup, and a screening of Masato Yukawa's film. Here is a report on this special day, the last day of Golden Week, when both the sun and the participants were shining!

Interview 2: Masato Yukawa / professional surfer

A professional surfer who grew up in Shonan, he also works as a DJ and creative director.Instagram : @masatoyukawa

How did you get involved with the Zushi Beach Film Festival?

Yukawa:This time, my film "NATURE CREATIONS" will be unveiled, so I will also be greeting the audience.

Mr. Yukawa has a strong image of surfing, but this film is a little different.

Yukawa:I have been to many places through surfing, but my main focus was on surfing, and I did not know the deeper aspects of the local area. Since it was getting harder to go abroad, I thought it would be a good time to delve into the culture and history of Japan. That is how I created "NATURE CREATIONS".

Yukawa:In my research, I found that Japan has a truly wonderful craftsmanship and culture, but on the other hand, there is also the problem of a lack of successors. I wanted to convey these aspects through my work.

Can you tell us about your work?

Yukawa:I think there are many theories, but in the course of my research, I learned that it originated in Japan in Miyazaki Prefecture. I visited Takachiho Shrine and had a conversation with the chief priest, who is said to be one of only two people in Japan to hold this title, and you can watch it on YouTube.

You have surfing scenes in your films, but surfing has always been at the core of your work, hasn't it?

Yukawa:There is no doubt about that. Without the ocean , my creativity would not be born. So ultimately, I want to give back to the ocean, nature, and the surfing industry.

Mr. Yukawa, who knows the world's oceans, how do you see the Japanese surfing scene?

Yukawa:. I believe that there are still few major companies entering the surfing industry. We would like to preserve the good surf culture that has been created by our predecessors up to now, while changing the culture that is not pleasant.

In fact, today's children actively greet and respect surfers who come from outside. I would like to lead this kind of relationship between our generation and the next generation, and to improve the environment for the next generation.

Lastly, can you tell us what you think of Vans, which is also a sponsor of the event?

Yukawa:Vans has supported me since I was 23 years old, and it has become a part of my body (laughs). (Laughs.) I especially like the signatures of international surfers. . The ones I wore today are Australian Wade Goodall's model. I like the design and the color, so I think I'll be wearing these until the holes are gone (laughs).
