What the campfire meister says when talking about fire tools.

Masaya Ino, a.k.a. "Bonfire Meister," has published his second book, "Bonfires and Tools. What role do tools play in the simple act of making a fire? And what is the current state of campfire culture in the midst of the camping boom that has not abated since the Corona disaster? Writer Issey Enomoto, an old acquaintance of Mr. Ino's and a bonfire enthusiast, sat down with him around a campfire to talk about all sorts of things related to bonfire tools.

Tools, which play a supporting role, enhance the flame, which is the star of the show.

In March 2022, he published his second book, "Bonfire and Tools. Why did you choose the theme of "tools" for this book?

Inono:The reason was simple: I thought it would be easier to write about tools. However, when I finished writing the first book, I felt that I had put everything I had into it. When I went to the computer to start writing the second book, however, I could not make any progress on the manuscript. I was so unable to write that I kept unconsciously plucking my own hair, so much so that part of the hair on the back of my head fell out unnaturally.

That must have been tough.

Inono:In "Fires and Tools," I introduce about 60 of my favorite fire tools, including fire pits, fire scissors, igniters, gloves, etc., while sharing my own experiences. It was very difficult to come up with each episode, and it took me more time and effort to write this book than the first one.

I read your book, "Bonfires and Tools. . It is more like a collection of columns in which he writes about his subjectivity and thoughts through his tools, rather than a catalog of recommended tools objectively. It was a worthwhile read, giving us a glimpse of Mr. Ino's stance on bonfires and his philosophy in choosing the right tools. The inclusion of his favorite beers and cigarettes alongside the excellent functional tools was also very much like Mr. Ino, and I thought it was very humorous.

Inono:. I am not the type of person who is particular about things in the first place. What is important is memories rather than things. I don't know how I can say this while writing a book about tools (laughs).

In a bonfire, the flame is the main attraction. The utensils are merely supporting players. However, the presence of supporting players enhances the presence of the main actor. In "Bonfires and Tools," we focus on these supporting players.

Mr. Ino, on the other hand, seems to be more interested in enjoying the simplicity of the campfire itself.

Inono:Campfires are essentially a simple, primitive act. It should not require that many tools. . I myself thought I was enjoying it without relying on tools. However, through the writing of this book, I realized once again how many tools I had. I also realized that there are so many tools for bonfires in the world.

. So it was an epiphany for the author, Mr. Ino, as well.

Inono:I call myself a campfire meister, but there were many things I noticed and learned while writing the book.
