8 zines selected by Chikashi Suzuki

Name_.Yukito Kono
Instagram account_.@yukihitokono
Occupation _Photographer/IACK
Title of work_.Shūshū: Matchboxes from Kikuko Obachan's Collection
Theme of the workThis zine contains a collection of matchboxes I found when cleaning out my great aunt's house a few years ago, and although they have no historical value or rarity, I was drawn to them because of their personal value and the memories they hold of the objects themselves, which cannot be replaced by anything else.
Key Points of Production_.Each book has a different page order, allowing for a unique opening experience for each person.
The reason I participated in this zine project_it looked like fun.
Suzuki Parent Comment
The zine is a little too complete, but I like the fact that it is about a matchbox, something that is likely to disappear in the future, something that everyone knows about but not everyone cares about. We can learn about faraway countries by searching on the Internet, but I think there is value in something that is closer to each individual now.

Name_.Nakanishi Bell

Occupation _Heian-period student of government administration
Title of work_.PINHOLE"
Theme of the workPinhole camera .
Key Points of Production_.. is to create a zine that makes turning the pages a pleasure.
The reason I participated in this zine project_I had never made a zine before, so I wanted to give it a try, and I thought it would be nice to have my first creation on the shelves of "Flotsam Books".
Suzuki Parent Comment
. a zine is supposed to be a printed book, but this is not a printed book (laughs). Every page is an elaborate work, and the printed matter is only three pages of photographs, plus the price tag of ¥400, which defies economic principles, is amazing."

Name_.Eisaku Sakai, Ryosuke Kataoka
Instagram account_.@practice_00_ @ryosukekataoka
Occupation _Editor/Artist
Title of work_.Good Practice Dialogues
Theme of the workDialogue for Good Practice. Dialogue was held as a "study" before the work was created, and instead of daily production, we talked about the time before the creation of the work. This was an attempt to continue preparing for the upcoming production.
Key Points of Production_.The process is to send studies to each other , and then send new studies in response to each other's work.
The reason why I participated in this zine project_because I am always indebted to the owner, Mr. Kobayashi!
Suzuki Parent Comment
. I don't understand the meaning at all (laughs). (Laughs.) "If it were a very expensive book, I wouldn't buy it, but if it were a cheap zine, I would buy one that doesn't make sense at all. They have a good sense of style and are very current, and I think they might be the most current.

Name_.triangular pattern of objects with symmetrical lines that form a single pattern
Instagram account_.@l_aio_l_aio
Occupation _artist
Title of work_.Nine Pictures
Theme of the workPainting and ZINE and (ZINE and Painting and)
Key Points of Production_.The aim was to have the paintings (=photographs) and the zine behave autonomously from each other. The printed paintings were printed on one side at equal size, folded, and bound together with water thread, and the position of the printing was adjusted as well as the arrangement of the paintings so that they would make an interesting spread as a zine.
Reason for participating in this zine project_I was considering having a solo exhibition at a small gallery nearby and was trying to compile my work when I heard about the project on SNS and decided to participate.

. you have a good binding, and you look like a painter. . I think you would be good as an art director or something. . When you notice the strength and weakness of the brush when you paint, it changes the way you see the painting. The thickness of the painting is also expressed properly, so he may be similar to a (painting) restorer.

Name_.Ryuhei Nakajima, Kento Fukuda, Natsuki Matsumoto
Instagram account_.@naka_shim @fukukensb @nuts_the_kid
Occupation _Heian-period student of government administration
Title of work_.caravanserai#2
Theme of the workShinjuku Central Park
Key Points of Production_.ZINE made by three skating friends.
Reason for participating in this zine project_It looked interesting.
Suzuki Parent Comment
It's like a zine," said Kato. "It's shot using various techniques, such as Pola and negatives, in a 90's style, but the tone is consistent. If someone over 30 years old had done this, it would be a bit painful, but this zine was made by a 17-year-old, so I think it has potential. It's like the digital generation is doing it with an understanding of the physical."

Name_.Julian Seslco
Instagram account_.@seslco
Occupation _photographer
Title of work_.Pictures#1
Theme of the workImage as language , insignificant photo
Key Points of Production_.I was very particular about the order of the pages .
The reason why I participated in this zine project_I thought that my zine would travel around the country, so that more people could share what they are thinking.
Suzuki Parent Comment
It is just like "the zine". It is like a zine that captures a person's daily life as it is in his or her own size. Originally, zines are personal, and one of the interesting things about them is that they allow the viewer to imagine what the person is going through.

Name_.traveller's tree (Ravenala madagascariensis)
Instagram account_.@bashow819
Occupation _Photographer Media Editor
Title of work_.Rough & Pop
Theme of the work'Let's face the digital society in a rough and poppy way.'
Key Points of Production_.Taking advantage of the lightness and dreariness of digital data, the images were cut out and put together in a rough, almost no-finder style, and with a deliberately vivid, pop-like quality. By making the title and other textual information detachable as a strip, we also aimed for a lightness of formality.
Reason for participating in this zine project_I participated in this project because I wanted people other than my acquaintances to see my work.
Suzuki Parent Comment
I don't know if it's intentional or not, but there is blue on every page. I don't know if it was the intention, but every page has blue. The pictures are taken at an angle, so they are not horizontal, but the blue gives a sense of unity, and makes them "viewable". I think it is a work that is well put together. I think you chose a good paper that can easily carry the color, but it is too good, so you might want to use a cheaper paper.

Name_.HATORI HIROMI
Instagram account_.@hiromi_hatori
Occupation _company employee
Title of work_.Will Smith.
Theme of the workThere is no particular theme, but I was conscious of doing something that could only be done in the zine medium. I feel that the role of zines, which is to collect photos and drawings for self-expression, has been taken over by social networking services (SNS), where people can easily post photos with simple captions. . I created this zine with the idea of what only a zine can do in the field.
Key Points of Production_.. is that we have lost the sense of trying to make it look good.
The reason I participated in this zine project_simply because I wanted many people to see it.
Suzuki Parent Comment
It feels contrived and targeted, which I think is both good and bad (laughs)."
For ZINE (Suzuki, Chikashi)
"For example, one foreign publisher, in order to increase sales, publishes photo books based on thorough marketing, such as, "We have to publish at least 70% photos with people in them," or "We have to publish photos with a lot of skin tones, such as nudes. ." and so on, and the photo book is published on the basis of thorough marketing. In this respect, zines are an extension of the individual, so they are close to the prototype of art, and I think they are the number one art piece in printing. the definition of a zine is to print on paper and to leave something behind. And since half of a photo is an editorial, you don't just leave the shot, the selection and layout are very important. If it's high quality and complete, you can sell it as a commercial publication, and if it's bullshit, it's just like a zine," he says.
