Born in 1973 . He joined BEAMS in 1996 and worked as a sales staff member and assistant buyer before becoming a buyer for the surf & skate department. In addition, he is also the director of the "SSZ" and "BROCHURE" brands. On the other hand, as the fourth generation owner of "Kato Farm," he grows vegetables every day. His hobby is visiting recycle stores.

Mr. Kato's first priority is his schedule at BEAMS, and in his spare time he works in the fields and sells vegetables as the fourth generation owner of "Kato Farm. Market days are especially difficult for him, as he has to work hard from early in the morning to sell the harvested vegetables, and then come back to "BEAMS" in the early afternoon. On this day, we met up with Mr. Kato in Kamakura, his home town. He said, "Surprisingly, I don't come to this area because I just go back and forth between the market and my house. . It's probably been quite a while since I've walked around. When I was a kid, I used to go to a cram school around here, so I used to come here a lot.
On this day, Mr. Kato wore pants by MAFF x BEAMS Japan, a shirt by Brochure, and Brandstone shoes. Brand Stone," which has also been in business for over 150 years, looks great in the historic streets of Kamakura. Brand Stone" is known for its side gore boots, but Mr. Kato had avoided wearing them for one reason or another.
I had the impression that side gore boots were for girls because a girl I dated in high school wore side gore boots.( lol) But when I actually got to wear them this time, I honestly thought they were cool. They look great in the field or on the street. By the way, they seem to be selling very well at Beams.
SSZ" is indispensable when talking about Mr. Kato, and the zine he distributes at his exhibitions is also synonymous with him. This time, in imitation of the zine, we asked him to write his thoughts in legal pads in various places, but the genesis of the zine goes back to his college days.
Even now, I write letters to people with whom I want to collaborate. Of course, I write them by hand. Going back even further, I was in the art club in high school, but I played rugby at a strong school that went all the way to the national level. After graduating from high school, I joined the rugby team at university, and people around me thought I was a very good rugby player. But one day, I was told that I wasn't good enough, and I was almost fired. I wrote an essay about it. I wrote an essay asking them to let me join the club. I knew they would understand that kind of thing (laughs). (Laughs.) I think that is the reason why I am making zines now.
Q1: For you, is working in the fields completely different from working at Beams? Or are there similarities between the two?
