Kajiyu du cinéma changer le monde ?

Make up for what is missing in this world. A one-night only all-night screening by stylist Yuta Kaji.

Stylist Yuta Kaji is a versatile and unique individual, styling celebrities and brands, writing and producing his own brand, "SANSE SANSE. On Saturday, February 25, Kaji will host an all-night event called "Kajiyu du cinéma" at Shimokitazawa's Shimokitazawa cinema "Shimokita Ekimae Cinema K2. Naturally, we asked him about this event, which is different from the usual events, and he told us a lot about it. And then we walked through the streets of Shimokitazawa, a neighborhood full of old and new stores, and asked the photographer to take pictures as he pleased....

What is Shimokita Ekimae Cinema K2?

Opened in January 2022 in the (tefu) lounge (tefu lounge) directly connected to Shimokitazawa's Shimokitazawa commercial facility "Shimokita Ekiue". It screens both Japanese and foreign films, and holds many talk shows and events. The theater values the sense of distance that only a mini-theater can provide, and functions as a place that connects film works and audiences.

Chapitre 1. Total coordination of the film.

The interview was conducted by Yusuke Asano, President of "weroll, Inc.", the organizer of this event, Naoyuki Omura , and Hidekazu Fukasawa, a designer.

First of all, please tell us how you came to be chosen as the curator of the all-night film program at K2.

Kaji:The invitation to participate in this project came as a complete surprise to me, so I would like to start by asking the "weroll" staff why they asked me to participate in this project. So, first of all, I would like to ask the staff of "weroll" why they asked me to participate in this project.

Asano:The "Incline" group, which includes our company and ourselves, has been involved in the production of movies and other projects, and since we originally had a connection with fashion and its media, we wanted to do something interesting. I had met Mr. Kaji at an exhibition and had a friend of his around the company, and I knew that he was a big fan of movies, so I was very interested in working with him.

On the left is Yuta Kaji , and on the right is Mr. Asano, president of "weroll".

Have you ever had a project where you put the curator in front of the audience instead of featuring the director?

Asano:I thought there was very little in the industry.

Kaji:About Peter Barakan? I've been to Peter Barakan's Music Film Festival .

So, how did you decide on the three films?

Kaji:This may not be relevant to visitors, but when it comes to actually showing a film, the rights issues are a huge hurdle. Like not being able to find the contact information for the company that is supposed to have the rights.

. If the work is old and independent, it is possible that the company that owns the rights may no longer exist.

Kaji:So this time, I was allowed to say what I wanted to say from the outside, and thankfully, the "weroll" side took care of the actual hard part. After all, the more we know, the narrower our ideas become. I thought it was a good idea to have the "weroll" side do the hard part. I asked the "weroll" side to control the rest! (laughs).

But if you know so much about movies as Mr. Kaji does, isn't it a bit of a challenge to be asked to choose three movies?

Kaji:. I haven't seen that many movies.

All:No, no, no (and tsk tsk).

Kaji:It's somewhat easier to understand if you compare it to clothes, but while some stylists wear a variety of clothes, that's not the case with me. I feel the same way about movies, whether they are good or bad, but I think I have a pretty well-defined zone of what I like. I guess I don't miss any movies, but if you ask me if I watch a lot of movies, I'm not so sure.

. It's hard to say that you've seen "a lot" of films, because it tends to be relative, isn't it? So, do you have a concept behind your choice of the three films?

Kaji:To tell you the truth, the first three I proposed are not in at all. That's how narrow the field is. At first, I proposed three proposals, including total coordination of clothing and DJing, which I thought were well balanced and had a clear line of thought, but they were all rejected, as were all the second proposals. If things continued as they were, it looked like the project itself would never get off the ground, so I used the OK list to make my selections. First of all, let's give it a try, right? Once you have held the first meeting, it is easier to get the second and subsequent meetings started, isn't it? That was our goal as well.

What was the process of assembling these three films?

Kaji:. just like the combination of clothes, there are parts that I thought about while doing it. Philippe Garrel, the director of "Géracie," is a philosophical director, and I thought it was a rather royal French film. I could do a total coordination of the other two films with French films, but that should be possible in the film industry. So, for my next choice, I wanted to make a selection that perhaps a film industry person would not have chosen, such as bringing a pair of damaged jeans and matching a pair of sneakers here. . For example, the last one I decided on was "Leningrad Cowboys Go America. . I wanted to bring a headdress, in other words, something symbolic. . In short, I wanted something with a punch, and I thought this would be it.

You have considered the field of clothing, Mr. Kaji.

Kaji:This time, I thought of it as a kind of coordination, which I think is very stylistic. . I think I was the only one who could have chosen the clothes as I enjoy wearing them, rather than in the context of a movie.

Chapitre 2. Let's do it.

Once again, did you intend to ask Mr. Kaji, the stylist, rather than someone from the movie industry?

Asano:That part was quite clear to me. I myself have not worked in the film industry for a long time, but rather in editing and other business-related work. I was involved in the production planning and advertising for "The Spy's Wife" as a result of working on a project directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, but after nearly five years in the industry, I feel that, for better or worse, the film industry is a closed one. It is difficult to put it simply, but to put it simply, there are many projects that are done by cinephiles for cinephiles at cinemas for cinephiles. If it is for cinephiles, of course a certain number of people will come. However, it does not have the same breadth. So, from a business point of view and in terms of how to attract people, there must be another way.

I see.

Asano:. Sometimes you learn about fashion and music from movies. I felt that this kind of thing does not happen very often, and I wanted to give it another try. I wanted to create a new angle on the world of film as seen from outside the film industry, and I thought that Mr. Kaji, who is also an expert on film, would be the best person to do that.

Furthermore, the reason I asked the filmmakers to choose from old films is the same as with old clothes: there are many good old films that have been buried, and I thought it would be interesting to have the filmmakers pick from them and assemble them as if they were fashion pieces. I am not sure if it is correct to say that films have a useful life, but the creators of films tend to look at the useful life of a product in terms of 50 or 100 years. As I was talking with Director Hamaguchi, he said that for the filmmakers, it is meaningless to make a film that will not be around 100 years from now. However, as a seller, the box-office owner, I was talking about the fact that they only see a film for 2 weeks, and that it is not good to see a film that will last for 100 years based on 2-week sales.

I know that there will be more than just movies to enjoy at this event.

Kaji:I'm going to do the movie fortune-telling, and in a way I think it's the main event of this event. . If I only select films, half of them will be 50 points. . Well, I think I am more like a film sommelier than a fortune teller. For example, if a customer comes and asks me, "How are you doing these days? Well, why don't you watch this movie? . I mean, I'm not a fortune teller, but I'm more like a film sommelier.

I started planning this event last summer, and when I held an exhibition of my writings around that time, quite a few young people came to see it. What I learned there was that young people nowadays have so much information that it is easier to have them present it to me. . The same is true for films, and I think it is surprisingly demanding to recommend films to individuals, as was the case with the three films I selected for this exhibition. For example, when it comes to my work and I am going to do a fashion shoot (photography), I do not show reference examples.

As a follow-up, I would like to explain to the readers that in the fashion industry, reference images are often shared as a common understanding that is easy to understand when shooting.

Kaji:In my case, I said, "I'm in this kind of mood, and I wanted to ask the photographer for this or that reason. Then I ask, "How are you feeling? I would start exchanging passes. I would then suggest that he/she should read a book or like a movie, and go on to the next step.... . That's probably how I arrive at my fashion shoot. . So I do a kind of movie fortune-telling on a daily basis.

I don't mean to meddle, but I am rather eager to convey what I think is good, and I have been doing that on a daily basis, so I thought I would try to do the same thing with a proper sign. Furthermore, I am looking forward to seeing how well it will work. You know, it's not like I'm Kenzo Kitakata (laughs), but I think there is still a need for people to get answers to their problems.

So you would come to the place, consult with Mr. Kaji, and ask him to read your fortune?

Kaji:. yes, I know, I know, I know. On the spot, impromptu, but in a casual manner . Eventually, I would like to be available by appointment only, and I would also like to go on business trips (laughs). I'd like to end up on TV, too (laughs). Maybe a morning show where I can tell people's horoscopes.

What else do you do?

Kaji:. there will be a vintage clothing sale to be held in the open space on the second floor. I thought it would be interesting to have a different time axis from watching a movie; people who can watch three movies in a row can do so, but there may be parts that are difficult. . Then, maybe I can tell my fortune without watching the second one. It's my first all-night event, so it's a little hard to predict, but I think everyone will be asleep by 3:00 p.m., like at a comic book store (laughs). . and then we'll serve good coffee and craft beer.

TAKAHIRO HARAA rough drawing of a graphic for a T-shirt by Mr. . One might think that it was a scene from one of his works, but it has nothing to do with the work at all.

Did you draw the graphics for the original T-shirts?

Kaji:No, it's not. It is Hara-kun, who always models for "SANSE SANSE. I went to see his paintings for the first time when he was in high school, and he was so cool that I asked him to model for me someday. Six years later...or maybe more, when I started "SANSE SANSE," I was thinking about who would be a good model...a model is important, and I was thinking about who would be good, not just a familiar face from the past, and I remembered that high school kid.... . and then I remembered. When I contacted him, I found out that he had entered Bunka Fashion College and had started making his own works, so I asked him to do my first work for this project.

When we first met at a family restaurant and discussed this project, he said to me, "Mr. Kaji, can I ask you one thing? I don't watch movies at all. I said, "Fine, I don't care. As a result, he said, "The finished product was amazing. It's cool, and it's pretty badass. . It's a part of the process of seeing how far everyone can go with their own groove.

Asano:We, as a company, value that kind of groove , and it's groovy.

Kaji:. but I feel like that is what is really missing right now. Many people say, "Let's do something interesting," but when the time comes to do it, they often find themselves tied down by a variety of obstacles. If we are going to do something interesting, let's do it. Why not just do it? . So, I am looking forward to seeing how far we can go with our initial thoughts through this project.

Chapitre 3. You can only get it on a movie theater screen at night.

. I know it's a little late for this, but I would like to review your filmography. I heard that you were influenced by Quentin Tarantino.

Kaji:Tarantino is from my generation; I was about 17 or 18 years old when "Pulp Fiction" and "Reservoir Dogs" were made. . That was the main era, not a subculture. I was influenced by the story that Tarantino became a director after working part-time at a video rental shop, and I thought, "I like movies, too, so I'll work at a video rental shop. . So I went from just watching movies to stepping into movies a little bit. . But I was fired after 3 days....

Huh? (Laughs)

Kaji:If I worked in a sweatshirt top and bottom, it was about 30 years ago, so the concept of wearing a sweatshirt top and bottom as daily wear was not a concept that the video rental owners had. He said it would be rude to the customers if I always wore a nightgown. So , I was fired.

Apart from that story, when I became a stylist at the age of about 26 or 7, I found that although I wanted to do the same things then as I do now, it was more closed than I had thought. I thought being a stylist was a bit more about being free to express all kinds of things. Now, everyone listens to me like this, but no one listened to me, and even if I spoke, I couldn't get my meaning across. It was a difficult road to go down. At that time, if you were a celebrity, you suddenly had a book published, so thinking back on it now, it was an easy idea, but I thought that if I became a celebrity first, I would be able to do things more freely.

So I thought it was a movie, and when I was being interviewed for a magazine at the time, I started writing "actor" in my title on my own (laughs). (Laughs.) The director didn't offer me a part in the film, but to my surprise, I got a call from a major agency for some reason. Well, let's talk a little bit about it, and I got an interview , and they asked me why I was interested. For example, there is an article in "anan" now that lists the 10 best men who want to be hugged, and that is fine, but I think it would be a mistake if I did not present another axis of interest. So, in order to do that, I said something like, "I think I need to become an actor. Well, it was like I was trying to pick a fight with him (laughs). (Laughs.) He said, "Well, if you want to be an actor, you won't be a stylist, right? (Laughs.) He said, "Well, if you are going to be an actor, you are not going to be a stylist, right? I said, "No, it's interesting to be an actor while being a stylist. I guess that would work now, but I don't think they understood what I meant. In the end, they turned me down for some reason. When I left that office, I thought, "I will definitely look back on this someday! But years later, I was offered a job as a stylist, and I readily accepted it (laughs).

. It's too interesting to be true.

Kaji:. I always had some kind of feeling about film, and I'm sure it still exists today. Just as the people at "weroll" and "K2" are concerned about the film industry, I am concerned about the fashion industry, and when I wondered how I could change it, I thought that I should stir things up like this. Of course, not everything has to change.

Which period of your life did you watch the most movies?

Kaji:I think for about 10 years, between the ages of 30 and 40. I used to go to the cinema a lot. I still don't watch movies on TV.

How do you reach people with information about the movie?

Kaji:People. I often learn from people I have met in person and trust. Also, I have come to know my zone somewhat.

Do you look at the director when you make a decision?

Kaji:Yes, I do. I look at the director first.

You directed "Knights of the Holy Grail," directed by Terrence Malick, who also won the Cannes Film Festival.

Kaji:I also like "Tree of Life," which had Brappy and Sean Penn in it one year before this one, but this one is a bit of a mystery to me. . I like, on the whole, movies that don't have answers, that are full of margins, or something. Like the way fashion is made, I also want to know myself in a way, somewhere, and that is like a journey, too, and I want to enjoy wondering how it will turn out. Anyway, like "Tree of Life," I like bad guys. In this kind of work, there is a sense that you have to be cool, but I always think that it's not that big of a deal. So, through my work, I want to tell young people that they don't have to be cool.

What do you find attractive about the three films from a fashion point of view?

Kaji:As for that part, it is self-explanatory. To be more specific, all the girls in "Knights of the Grail" are beautiful and erotic (laughs). Natalie Portman is also very beautiful. Also, the way it's shot is cool, and the locations and fashion are good, so it's a good-looking picture. As for Philippe Garrel's "Géracie," the way the French people dressed in the past, as if they didn't care about anything, is very stylish. The director himself thinks it is very fashionable, and the world he depicts is also very fashionable. One of the characters in the film is his own son, who is also very cool, both in body and in the way he dresses. Leningrad Cowboys Go America" is conversely very current, and I think that kind of energy can be found in today's fashion as well.

The visuals are all so interesting and cool, I would love to see them on the big screen.

Kaji:It is good to have people pay attention to the story itself, but I think that a movie can also give you something different just by looking at something other than the story for a moment. Watching a movie at home on TV or on a computer is totally different from watching it in a theater. If you put something into your brain in that state, the result will be completely different from what you would normally expect. Therefore, I think that watching a movie in a theater has a certain meaning. I would like to think so.

Yes, that is true. Music also depends on the volume and quality of the sound, and the way it is conveyed. K2 has a lot of speakers, and the sound seems to be good.

Asano:The director of "K2" and Ryosuke Nagaoka of the Petrols used to play together, and in fact, he was the first artist on Nagaoka's record label. . That's one of the reasons why we are so particular about the acoustics.

I like that. You mentioned earlier that it is good to have someone make recommendations because there is an overabundance of information, but there is romance because the selector is a person. Algorithms are excellent in their own right, but I like the fact that the selector has a story in his or her own flesh and blood.

Kaji:That would be great to hear. By the way, it was all night at the movies when the two "True Romance" characters meet, wasn't it?

Yes, that's true.

Kaji:I don't mind if we don't meet, but I still think it's romantic just because it's a movie at night.
